4/21/2021 USA Grandpa Bill: Dani, I've come back to this video several times over the past two years because I like the way you have made it. It has been a source of a smile to me every time. You made James' easel so much better and my efforts have been more accomplished because of it. I had procrastinated. Thank you for freely sharing your insight and adjustments. I was a little dismayed to find that James was charging $15 for his how-to video, and I turned again to your good heart. Much love to you.
I can't decide if you are adorable, brilliant, adorably brilliant, or brilliantly adorable, so I guess I'll go for all four. Your personality absolutely MAKES this video!
Great upgrade! I will be making an easel using the modifications you came up with. You are lovely! May you and yours stay healthy and hopefully happy! .
I love your attitude. It's the attitude consisting of snark, creativity, optimism, and perseverance that permeates my brain. So in one sense, I love MY attitude. Which is yours. Which makes me a narcissist or a stalker. My beloved wife will probably say it's one or the other... but only jokingly... I think. ANYWAY... wonderful video with wonderful ideas for the easel I will probably want to make for the first day I go plein air. Merci beaucoup madame! :-)
Oh wow that’s cool that you made a matt for the easel & a water jar container setup. A fantastic idea that I am going to have to give a try! I love 💕 these modifications!! I have made my versions of the James Gurney easel from 3 different sizes of bamboo cutting boards (4 inches x 6 inches, 8 inches x 10 inches, & 9 inches x 12 inches). Thanks for sharing this wonderful informational video with us!! 🥰
I have been wanting to design my own as well, loved your ideas and I want to "borrow" some or all of them. I have been using some of that friction mat to unironically capture cat litter when Artie the cat steps out of his box. bravo on all the ideas.
Lol, I thought the hanging bolts were just going to be counter weights or something because you said it was ridiculously over engineered. Then when you snapped them to the magnets was so satisfying and just enough engineered!
Hej Dani, I enjoyed your quirky little vid on your super charming painting rig.. Helped me down tune mine to 2 pieces of lovable wood and a few magnets. Do you have the rest of the story about getting thrown off site on the marker sketch :-) sounds like fun! All the best Alistair
Brilliant! I am going to use several of you suggestions. FYI: The Koi set are designed to hold a paper or sketch book in the lid, to paint on while you hold it, that’s why it doesn’t lay flat. Most of them come with the detachable mixing trays. Thank for the video, it was great.
Well, you are very innovative to say the least. One thing, your modified hinges are way cool, but you might like to know that that type of hinge is (almost) readily available at a good hardware store or (since you mentioned it) Home Depot, etc. They are known as "no-mortise hinges or barrel hinges," etc., and are very reasonably priced for a pair (less than $5). Thank you for your fascinating input.
This is so cool! I made an easel board thingy that straps to my body and everything attaches with binder clips and velcro but I want to make another one. I hadn't thought of magnets!
You not only pronounced the word "pochade" correctly, for a North American English speaking person, you pronounced it absolutely correctly. Take that from a person who's mother-tongue is French. :)
5/15/2021 USA Grandpa Bill: Please come be my neighbor. I like your take on life. You know how when you meet someone and you just instinctively like or dislike them? I like you. My spine and replaced hips are causing me a lot of pain these days and I need someone cheery and inventive near. I love to re-engineer (or de-engineer) some things. I'm 73 now and with my experience, I can really make a mess now.
Holy crap from the UK...the over engineering here of the set up...I love your train of thought on all this...the problem solving...if it works for you. 😀 Entertaining. Subscribed just on the strength of this video.
This was fun to watch because I just spent a weekend MacGyvering a 'tripod easel' only to discover I'd actually found a really awkward and wobbly way to make a diy music stand 😂
Super nice indeed I too am a James Gurney fan that is in the process of building the tripod/mount sketch book but can you or anyone tell me the length and width of the sketch demensions are thank you very much!!!!
What are the dimensions of the 2 wood pieces? Yeah, the reclaimed wood is cool! Also what is the name of the type of hinge that you used on the wood? Love your set up!
You are the younger version of me! I’ve hacked re-engineered almost everything I use. Honestly I suspect I enjoy the creating more than the finished item. As a bonus after failing and damaging the original item, I repair it back to its original state. My latest travel easel problems are now solved using some of these ideas, thank you!
Very cool setup! JG has inspired me to start painting again as well so working on a new setup! Thoughts after seeing your video, Maybe just glue some of the non stick mat to the bottom of the pallet cases? Does that tripod make it to eye level? Or an extension 1/4 -20 rod necessary?
Isabella Ribeiro I made this before James Gurney came out with his official tutorial, but it follows along those lines because I tried to design mine off of the one he uses in all his videos... But he has a longer video that can be purchased, and shorter ones here on youtube that describe his easel. I used the same hinges he recommends (purchased off Amazon) and then just regular super magnets from the hardware store. If I make another one, I might film it and make a tutorial, but no plans at the moment, no.
@@lethyguaimare they're on Amazon. They're called torque friction hinges, or sometimes just frction hinges. They're probably the most expensive thing, but they're vital. I could link you to it, but they come in all sizes and shapes. You can pick the one that you like the looks of best :)
Ha! I've painted (oils) for over 50 years and never used an easel. I lay my canvas flat and paint more as if I were writing a letter, supporting my arm, wrist and hand from a bridge. Far and away more comfortable than conventional methods.
Very clever modifications. Nice work. May I ask what size is the sketchbook? I am new to James Gurney art and would like to get a sketchbook like you have but not sure what type to buy. Thanks!
It's simply a 5x8" watercolor notebook. The brand is Hand book Journal Company. I can't find the exact one on Amazon, but I will link a smaller version. :) www.amazon.com/Hand-Book-Journal-Co-Travelogue-Landscape/dp/B005Z3YVX4/ref=sr_1_3?crid=2OI9AR9DYH07Q&keywords=handbook+travelogue+journal&qid=1572885664&sprefix=hand+book+travelogue+journal%2Caps%2C187&sr=8-3

I rarely say this (because I've met few of intrinsic indicative quality) but you're an intriguing human being. You have a savant's predisposition toward dimensional symmetry and cohesiveness that probably reflects a high IQ and affinity toward engineering and architecture. Very cool person, and very unique. Good luck to you.
I was watching several of the Urban Sketchers Symposium videos and came across this clever one that I think you will love. It's only for the "over-engineer-minded", so beware. 😂th-cam.com/video/gUr6sKRj5iU/w-d-xo.html
If you keep painting small, you will never learn to paint big or even a size that is marketable. Painting all of your paintings small is a good way to not learn. You wont even own the tools to paint bigger.
Such a clever modification! I love how you attach your water jar to the easel and your use of friction mats.

So smart and clever!! Not being handy with tools and wood working I probably can’t make the Pochade part, but the friction pad & water cup-genius!!
This was brilliant! Thank you so much for sharing!
l was excited watching and waiting for each helpful additive to be placed. thank you
Brilliant!
And so light and compact..
Great ideas. I love getting a work space fine tuned.
Great video and build.

Great job, I love those neodymium magnets.

These are very good mods, thanks for sharing!

This is really cool :0 I love your exploring attitude about the process of making things you like!
Teeny things ARE cute.
I am LOVING your adjustments, and so hardcore want this setup.
The Rolls Royce of plein air easels.
Lol at your Sandra Bullock moment at 4:26, but actually you’re reminding me of her all the way through. 😁
LUVing your Image Projection. With 2020 vision, subscribed immediately. Hope these past 3 years have been good for you and to you.

I absolutely love this 🖤
Delightful! I can use that friction mat idea like, right now.
Well done! Thank you
I love it when people have clever ideas like this! Great stuff, Dani. James Gurney is my gouache hero too!

Those are some genius ideas ❤️

That's really cool. I like to do plein air painting too. I've been considering making one of those Gurney easels for a while.
AWESOME! I love your ideas. And I hope to reconstruct your variation of James Gurney's easel. ;)
Exceptionally good video. Keep up the good work.
How clever you are! I'm gonna have to steal.....hmmmm, I mean get inspired by your ideas. This is really helpful.
Brilliant ideas....!
Amazing you're a genius.

and you can plug another magnetic device at schetchbook zone and expand the area keeping the setup for inks, water etc

Gurney's spot paintings is very exellent. congratulates

Very cool

That's very cool. Thx for sharing. Why are the friction hinges so expensive?
What are the dimensions of the 2 wood pieces? Yeah, the reclaimed wood is cool! Also what is the name of the type of hinge that you used on the wood? Love your set up!
They’re called friction hinges.
You are genius! Thanks for the video!
Where do I find the friction mat? What is official name?
I just picked it up from the hardware store in the section with all the shelf liners. I don't recall its actual brand, apologies.
Amazing work .
Thank you. I loved this.

Life is a great puzzle ^_^
Cool idea
Well done. I made one as well inspired by James Gurney
Any idea what size is this version. Thanks for sharing it. Great ideas.
This is for a 5x8" Sketchbook mostly. The easel itself is 6x11" when closed. :)
Very cool setup! JG has inspired me to start painting again as well so working on a new setup!

Hai dani. Where do you stay?
Where did you get the friction hinges from? i only find expensive ones =/
Hannah Bergh from Amazon. :)
Plans on a tutorial or links to everything you used/made?

Try filing the plastic hinge part that prevents the lid from laying flat when open!

good job
nice evolution of Jim's design...BTW they are 'nuts', not bolts :-)

Ha. You're funny.. I like your innovativeness. (Is that a word?) Thx
how did you put the magnets inside the tray
dtrigs108 I just used a drill bit to sink into the wood but not all the way through and then I put glue on the hole and pressed the magnet in.
plenty of picnic tables to lean on. That's a lot of frumpy..
Great tips ty!
