- Learning how to drill holes in steel is pretty simple. Sure, you can dive deep into speeds and feeds to make it more complicated. Typically, when drilling into steel, especially thick steel, if you slow the drill down, you should be ok. Also, many users don't apply enough pressure to the drill and bit. Keep enough pressure applied so that you're getting metal bits and corkscrews. If all you see is steel dust, then you're either not applying enough pressure or your bit is dull. Of course, using the correct bit for the job also helps a ton.

That new Dewalt is a nice drill. I can’t wait to pick that up
I highly recommend the dewalt impact rated step drill bits. They're a little noisey because of the impact but they have no kickback when the next step grabs. Plus impacts have a higher top speed when not impacting which makes it easier to start the hole from the smallest step where the surface speed will be lowest.
I agree. I have the same ones and I have never seen a drill bit cut as good as those do
Project Farm test step bits a couple of years ago and Dewalt with the spiral flutes did the best. In general Dewalt makes good construction grade drill bits. Mind you I didn't say machinist grade lol

Is it me or where you drilling in reverse with the hole saw at first????
I use wax for abrasive diskes cutting aluminum, also for cutting aluminum with a jigsaw I rub the wax on the line I'm cutting and it grabs the wax on the way down through the cut .
Try soap, wax can be hard to clean off, and is flammable,

Good stuff sir. One thing I wonder about is regular drill bits with a step bit tip. Norseman brand makes a set but it's $170-200 so I haven't pulled the trigger yet.
One common route to dulling a drill bit is chipping it when using it to enlarge a hole and that is from too much pressure. When there is not as much metal for the drill bit face to press into its much easier to chip it. The key there is light pressure. The common advice for pilot hole size is for it to be a little larger than the webbing of the following drill bit.
The other common way to dull a drill bit is letting it overheat. This happens easily with too much speed and no coolant. Along with cutting oils there are also water soluble cutting oils. They use a bit of oil to protect the metals and a lot of water to keep things cool. They are sold a just the oil and you add the water.
After you buy the expensive 29 piece set you can replace just the individual bits. I find I replace mostly the small, cheap bits. Some of the real expensive ones are geared towards machine use. Look for a set advertised for general use (and not the cheapest ones, but also not the most expensive).
Also, with a pile of dull / chipped drill bits, a 60-80 grit bench grinder wheel, a cup of water, a drill bit gauge, a bit of research, and some motivation you can learn to sharpen larger drill bits.
I don't know much about the step tip drill bits other than I think I know what you're referring to.
What kind of wax are you using for drilling? I would like to look into it.

What's the part number for the champion thick metal step bits? Looked on their website but can't find them.

Timeframe: 11:25 is the starting point. I thought I am seeing smoke unless it is something else? At 12:02 he mentions that there is no smoke.
Try drilling through thick stainless
I just dip my bits in cheap motor oil, works great lol
Soap and water. Cheeper and unlimited use. You run out of oil quickly.
For your safety it is not recommend to wear gloves while operating a drill press.
Why are you shouting? It's TH-cam, most people either have headphones on or are sat 4' from the tv.
It would be quieter if I plugged the drill in and found out for myself!
