Next to Miles Davis' "So What" I think this Donald Byrd song is the best jazz song ever- expertly played by Dexter Gordon. I could listen to this one million times and never tire of it, it is an absolutely phenomenal piece of music.I feel lucky to have been alive to hear music this good,it is too bad most people will go through life and never have heard masterpieces like this-long live jazz(the greatest art form ever created)
I agree my older brother use to play Dexter and the other Classical Jazz Greats. I must have hit the replay button 20 times so far since I came across this piece.
I agree. This is a very underrated song. I listened to Jazz for 15 years before I heard this for the first time on Ken Burns' Jazz series. Couldn't believe I never heard it before.
i would drive sometimes for hours at night listening to my favorite jazz station on my fm tuner (late 60s'). when this came on i would lament over losing my ex girl friend. beautiful and full of emotion. he was great and so were the rest of the band. always in my heart. a shame he's gone.
Love your passion for the music. It's been a lifetime obsession since I first heard Love Supreme 43 years ago. Sad to read about Donald Byrd. Left us with one of the great cuts ever.
Used to have a bar in rural old England. The Red Lion. I used to talk about my love of jazz with the locals. We don't like jazz..can't stand it; they would say. I started playing Dexter Gordon's Go album- early doors. This is good they'd say. What is it ? Who is it? It's jazz by the great Dexter Gordon. Play some more so,I played this album " One Flight Up". We eventually had live music and at the end of the act I'd always take it out with this track...Tanya. Happy Days.
in a raspy low voice Dexter approaches the mike......Tanya, the girl upstairs...Tanya. Le Grande, manufique!!!!! one of my all time favorites..... Dig it.
Jazz is not music it is spiritually subconscious stimulation.Have you ever met somebody who didnt "get"jazz?I always tell them- its ok you werent supposed to anyways.Love Supreme -man that is my second favorite to Kind of Blue.I was just listening to 'Trane at the Village Vanguard this weekend-very soothing to my soul.I also was listening to Herbie Hancock- Mr Hands from 1980.Jazz is the best.
I don't know if I get it myself, I only know I like some of it. I find myself cherry picking jazz songs, albums, artists but I do that with other music too, of course. Duke Ellington said something like, "There's two kinds of music, good and bad. If you like it it's good, if you don't like it it's bad." That's the way I feel about it. Maybe my subconscious has good taste? lol!
I digging your analogy man.. been listening to this jam since it came out when I was a young sax player in high school.. very passionate about Dexter & Byrd
Yes, a very beautiful piece from one of the absolute tenor sax giants. If you like this, look into the cut Secret Love from Dexter's Live At Carnegie Hall. His sound and musicianship will astound anyone with an ear and a heart. Also, check out Lee Morgan's title cut Search For The New Land. Like Tanya, a hauntingly gorgeous cut with extended solos from top players at the top of their game. Recorded the same year, same studio by Rudy VG.
Damn...two guys trying to holler at the same chick. With even a third man (bruh on the keys) trying to squeeze into it. Love jazz music. Use to listen to this song over and over again on wax (the full song takes up a whole side of a LP). Can't get any smoother than this.
You know your Jazz dude-excellent recommendation on Secret Love-Dexter Gordon from Carnegie my second favorite Dexter Gordon song.I will look into Lee Morgan, thanks for the info-Jazz fans are the coolest people ever
thinking more about this, dexter must have had a woman (tanya) in his life that drove him to this composition and i feel his emotion in this song just as i felt about my first love.
A musical tour de force of straight ahead hard bop Jazz groove as Arthur Taylor on Drums and Kenny Drew on Piano propels the piece forward. The 18 yr old Dane, Niels-Henning Orstead Pedesen on bass holding it all together while Byrd and Gordon are in flight.
danm48, to my understanding Donald Byrd composed the above recording, featuring himself or Dexter Gordon as lead man. In any case, they both new TANYA. The recording is so passionate with that down home driving Blues spanking the hand of jazz.
just a thought...some great sax players we lost at a young age, just a name a few; joe henderson 64 gerry mulligan - 64 stand getz - 68 dexter gordon - 67 sonny stitt - 58 roland kirk = 42 john coltrane - 40 cannonball aderley - 46 paul desmond - 52
These giants were very young and gave so much of themselves to the world . What a terrible lost to the jazz community. Yet, more than that, what a lost to the family. But at least they left us a great repertoire of musical dialogue that so few generations will after touch that!.
THOSE NAMED ABOVE ARE ALL THAT ARE NEEDED TO STUDY FROM AS WE GO INTO THE NEXT SEVERAL HUNDRED YEARS. IF AND WHEN THE MUSIC MAKES ANOTHER LEAP AS IT DID FROM 'SWING TO BOP' WE JUST PRAY OUR CHILDREN ARE FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO BE ABLE TO RECEIVE THE GOD GIVEN GIFTS OF THE THE GENTLEMEN MENTIONED ABOVE
IVE BEEN BLESSED. I GREW UP IN HARLEM AND WAS ABLE TO SEE AND HEAR MANY OF THE BOPPERS PERFORM WHEN THEY WERENT IN EUROPE DOING GIGS ON THE ROAD. EXAMPLE; IM ON 141ST EDGECOMBE AVE. SONNY ROLLINS ON 137 ST. DUKE ELLINGTON ON 155 TH ST. MY DAD MADE ALL MY BROTHERS AND I ATTEND BUD POWELLS FUNERAL.

Only a small percentage of "most people who will go through life and never have heard masterpieces like this" would appreciate it anyway. Same goes for the masterpieces of classical music; deep appreciation of great music is a precious gift which relatively few are blessed with.
@@RD3D-1 People aren't blessed with a deep appreciation of art--it's nurtured through the environment in which they're raised and the people that raise them. Those privileged to have access to quality education and exposure to great art enables the appreciation of it.

This song got me home from school last night. Came on as soon as I got in the car...went off as I pulled into the garage.
Whether you want to or not this song will take you to so many places and I love it.
Magic...3 years on and it still sounds magic...:-) more like this, please...

That's okay! let the masses listen to tiny wayne and madam googoo. Society is always held up by the strength, passion, and intellect of the few.

Your taste in music is exceptional-I was looking at your "listens" and the depth of your musical likes is extremely impressive
The Gordon solo has such coherency. Genius.
Favorite Dexter Gordon track, should have saved the vinyl!
I played Maceo Parker's Children's World before this one. Got these 2 plus many more from my dad coming home late on that purple bag. (Crown Royal).
thinking more about this, dexter must have had a woman (tanya) in his life that drove him to this composition and i feel his emotion in this song just as i felt about my first love.
Happy birthday dex!!

Make it 10, prb.a few 12 year olds that don't know crapp about anything except Xbox..
