This is Rockabilly and Robert loved it. Right after Bonzo’s death and the dissolution of Zeppelin, Robert had to decide if he still wanted to stay in music. So he put together a local band and drove around to little pub gigs in England. Called themselves The Honeydrippers, and Roberts name was not mentioned. They flew under the radar. It was a return to Roberts roots. And they played this kind of music. Robert put out an EP of rockabilly/Elvis type songs in 1984 under the moniker of The Honeydrippers. Actually has guest contributions from Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck. If you like this style, you might wish to check it out. The “hit” from it is Good Rockin’ at Midnight. Robert adored Elvis and he sings in that style very well.

I like country music, and I'll say this...this song is more country, and better sounding than a lot of "country" music from the last decade or so, which has been in my opinion basically pop music played while wearing a country hat and boots!

  • @henriettaskolnick4445

This song was inspired by Texas groupie Audrey Hamilton, who was Robert's girl during the 1977 tour. Supposedly the title came about because Robert would occasionally hear it used in conversation as an indication of happiness, as in "Hot dog! I just scored tickets to Led Zeppelin's concert!". Such an all-American saying tickled his English fancy so decided to use it as the title. It's kind of like how Paul McCartney heard the American term "meter maid" and decided to use it in the Beatles song Lovely Rita, but I digress. Jimmy used a Fender Telecaster with a B-bender, which gave it that almost pedal steel sound effect during his solo. The band used to use Ricky Nelson and Elvis songs to warm up during their rehearsals in London for this album so it kind of came together more from an original rock and roll place rather than true country. Still, rock and roll, rockabilly, call it what you will, the band seemed to enjoy exploring a lot of musical textures in this album that they hadn't previously.

Robert says this is about Texas and the state of mind of its people but ... He famously travelled with a young girl (Audrey Hamilton) while on tour in 77. Audrey Hamilton was born on August 6, 1956, in Dallas, Texas. The affair ended when his son Karic died, ending their US tour 10 dates short. She hooked up with several other rock stars, eventually retiring from groupie status after having a daughter with KISS frontman Ace Frehley.

One of the fascinating and great things about the whole 60's and 70's British musicians/bands such as Zeppelin, Clapton, Beck is that they studied and loved American black blues even Jazz as well as American country music and you can see all of these influences in their music.
As several commentators mentioned below, Plant's The Honey Drippers are just amazing and few people outside of musician's or music nerds like me know they even existed because they weren't commercial and got zero radio play here in the US at least back in the day.
What make's it cool is that Plant didn't give a sh@t and was just making the music that he wanted to make. Of course at that point, he had f'you money to do that but that's what makes it even more cool again IMHO.

The type of music is called rockabilly combination of rock ‘n’ roll and hillbilly music another words country, which is very popular in the 50s basically the mixture of black and white music the roots of rock ‘n’ roll
Robert Plant was a huge Elvis Presley fan that was one of his biggest influences, and they were actually doing old Elvis Presley songs in rockabilly songs, playing around in the studio just jamming
And that is what inspired the song

I've always thought rock bands can do country better than the radio friendly country bands of the past 30-40 years. Thin Lizzy-Cowboy Song, many Stones songs, The Who and even up through the 80s and 90s. Bands like Social Distortion, Soul Asylum, Meat Puppets flavored their punk/indie sound with country at times. Always loved Hot Dog as well, they put a neat spin on this song that sounds like nothing else.

It’s funny that Led Zeppelin gets called heavy metal and hard rock when they could play almost and style of music and do it all so well. I always liked this song!

This is Zeppelin clowning. Just like The Crunge. The musianship is still so top level that people continue to take it too seriously. Jimmy and Robert were cracking up and laughing their asses off when they played it live at Knebworth. JPJ was bouncing up and down at the keyboard. 😅
