When he said how brave Ed was until the end I just lost it. But I then thought about how blessed we all are to have existed in this sliver of time in which the Van Halen brothers and their band existed. So blessed are we ❤️

I'm 52. Music lover and was a professional drummer for a long. Van halen is the only band did something to me emotionally the first time I heard them in 1978. My uncle Told me there was this new band I had to hear and he played atomic punk on this little bitty Cheap tape recorder my grandmother had. I still remember just being stunned and feeling those goosebumps. He said I looked like I saw santa claus. Forever they're my band. I still Cry when I think about Alex and not having his brother. I would buy guitar magazines at 7yrs old just so I could read about van halen. Further I would always listen to a van halen song before I took the stage. So I could get in the mood and remember It's not about the notes. It's about kicking ass and having some fun and give the audience the money's worth!! Long live the kings of rock and roll 💯💯💯

GreetingsfromgreatBritain..van Halen were fantastic...every album I devoured to find out what eddie was up to...sending off to America for USA only guitar magazines...seeking every rare (in the UK anyway) morsal on them...they were NEVER on UK telly !!...even in the Hagar years when he'd just about done it all...he surprise up with a fecking power drill...lol
I’m the same. I felt a kinship to Ed and Al due to how I was raised. They’re so old school, while being able to remain one of the heaviest bands (when they desired ex As Is) they could be country, metal, jazz, doo wop….BIG rock! Man what a great band and this is so cathartic hearing his voice.
Great story man! Reminded me of how the Abbott brothers use to say Van Halen to each other before EVERY Pantera show. Just something so magical about VH that will never die!!!
In 1978 my friend invited me to his house specifically to listen to this band called van halen....the only way I can compare that experience is when someone finds God!! I was 12 years old I'm now 58 and van halen is still a massive part of my life thanks Alex, Ed, Mike and dave!

I don't know, Alex. But listening to this interview gave me an understanding of how fortunate the world was to have Van Halen. Alex explained many musical concepts to a public that did not get it. Alex also came off as a likable guy. I can also see the pain of the loss of his brother Eddie. My prayers for Alex are that he makes peace with God through the Son of God. This was a great interview.
My father was a Dutch WW2 refugee, stationed on Java as a pianist in a military band in the late 40s, came to America in the 50s and kinda forced piano on me as a kid. I shared a birthday with Eddie and was totally swept away by Van Halen! Love them!

I really love this interview! Van Halen was my favorite band since I was in High School. As an old man now, and hearing Alex speak is so new to me. For the longest time, it was always Dave and Sammy speaking…and recently I’ve seen Eddie speak, but Alex is so well spoken and interesting! Watching my Child Hood Idols age and Alex aged so well. I know he is still mourning the loss of his great brother, but he has proven he is an intelligent and great man!
So great hearing Alex van Halen talk about the Netherlands. I am still "proud" that the Van Halen brothers were born here in the lowlands. Beside that it is great to hear Alex talk in general. He did not talk for a long time, it's beautiful to hear his stories.
No disrespect to the woman who interviewed Ed at the Smithsonian, but she didn’t guide the interview with great questions like this. She more or less relied on Ed to never stop talking. Which was good also, I suppose.

I'm blessed to have seen Van Halen a handful of times in Fresno, Ca. I was at one of the two nights that were recorded in 1992. My only memory of that concert was Alex's drum solo. It was the only drum solo I've ever heard live where I stood and headbanged the entire time. Thanks for the memory and the book. It was a great read.

Man, there will never be another band like the mighty Van Halen. It partly saddens me but also the fact that I existed while they ruled the planet makes me ecstatic. I'm thrilled that I got to see them in 1988, twice in 1993, 1995, 1998, 2007, twice in 2008, and 10/4/15 at The Hollywood Bowl. They were always incredible, but being there for their last ever performance in 2015, and 5/13/08 in Jersey, three rows back from the stage, were super special! Thanks for the music, Edward and Al!!
I've been a hardcore fan since VHI came out, I was 13-yo. Saw them when the first headlined in 1979 when they only had the first 2 records and saw them every time they came through San Diego during the Roth years. I missed the Van Hagar live shows, I wished I hadn't.

Man time flies, I was able to see them live a few weeks after their first album was released, at the US festival and beyond. I believe my rough count is 14 shows, there is no doubt what Eddie did on the guitar had everyone trying to find out who they were? that was not an easy proposition in '77-'78 for obvious reasons. Being a drummer, what Alex was doing on drums was just as amazing as what Ed did on guitar. What always struck me about his drumming is how he mimicked Ed's picking or progressions in some way shape or form. Alex never really had that much to say over the years and I absolutely loved listening to his answers and seeing his personality, I think what I have learned from this and will learn more from his book is that no matter what he will do everything that he can to protect Van Halen the band and Van Halen the family name's legacy. Thank you Alex!!!
So great to see Alex after so long. I grew up with Van Halen, wow how cool was it listening to these rexords for the first time! After not seeing Alex for so long I wondered if he was bitter, but it's great to see him with a big smile on his face and telling such great stories.
Van Halen changed the game! Alex, Eddie, David, & Michael inspired so many kids(including me) to pick up an instrument and go for it! Thank you Alex for all the inspiration and kick A$$ music! PLAY LOUD

Man time flies, I was able to see them live a few weeks after their first album was released, at the US festival and beyond. I believe my rough count is 14 shows, there is no doubt what Eddie did on the guitar had everyone trying to find out who they were? that was not an easy proposition in '77-'78 for obvious reasons. Being a drummer, what Alex was doing on drums was just as amazing as what Ed did on guitar. What always struck me about his drumming is how he mimicked Ed's picking or progressions in some way shape or form. Alex never really had that much to say over the years and I absolutely loved listening to his answers and seeing his personality, I think what I have learned from this and will learn more from his book is that no matter what he will do everything that he can to protect Van Halen the band and Van Halen the family name's legacy. Thank you Alex!!!

So great to see Alex after so long. I grew up with Van Halen, wow how cool was it listening to these rexords for the first time! After not seeing Alex for so long I wondered if he was bitter, but it's great to see him with a big smile on his face and telling such great stories.
Van Halen changed the game! Alex, Eddie, David, & Michael inspired so many kids(including me) to pick up an instrument and go for it! Thank you Alex for all the inspiration and kick A$$ music! PLAY LOUD
