When the say “high end speciality shop” they mean 250% markup for people with lots of dollars and no “sense.” But I’m sure they’ll great if you fit that category; snobby off-roader. Just kidding guys, it’s a joke. I love my suspension and what to say thanks!

I have bin authorized car mechanic/technician for 20 years and have worked in a winning rally team for several years so I know the most of this.

Finally! A video with the details with no compromise, great video. Would you consider doing a video on shock/ coil over adjustment? Why it might be better for more or less rebound and compression and what typical applications run (i.e. Desert racing vs trail running vs rock crawling vs mall crawling aka daily driver). These in depth videos with Ben are amazing! I really appreciate all the info and time invested in making them, it's convinced me to start looking for some Kings to upgrade the Bilsteins on my '17 Pro4x Frontier. It's a daily driver as well as my hunting, camping and shooting rig so being able to tackle unkept logging and mining roads in western Canada is a necessity, planning on adding an ARB front bumper and winch eventually and the weight that comes with it. I was thinking about the Nissan OEM kit with some hydraulic bump stops both front and rear, wondering if that would be a good fit or if another combo would suit my needs better?

I spent about a year trying to figure out how to upgrade my suspension properly. Finally i came across this video, as you can see this is a complicated subject. I highly recommend watching this whole video. It help me make the right choices without overspending on things i just didn't need. I did end up purchasing might upgrades from Filthy and i am very happy with the results. This is my daily driver GMC Sierra 1500 4x4, i wanted to upgrade and improve off-road performance but maintain decent Highway/paved roads too. The OEM kit I got from Filthy is fantastic, i couldn't be happier...Thx Ben!

I really need to come to your shop, Ben. I love watching your videos and soaking up this information, but I am the kind of person that needs the hands on experience to really understand the "why's" of any given subject. I have been slowly upgrading my '18 Tundra in an economical manner. I get out of the office and away from patients about once a month and I am really only upgrading and replacing parts as I come to realize the truck is suffering out on the trails ( I am still in need of all the recovery gear), so I have upgraded the tires to 33 inch BFG KO2s and added some Bilstein adjustable 5100s up front and 5100s in the rear with the Toytec 1.5 inch Shackles. This truck is my daily driver and would like to keep it a daily driver for the time being, but with more attitude and capabilities off road. I would love to pick your brains about my setup and the future of this truck. Thanks so much for all your hard work and dedication to us, your viewers and customers.

A fabulous informative video that covers the shock spectrum considerations. Shame I’m here in the UK as I’m sure in the future I would upgrade my current shock system on my UK Ford Ranger MRST to something suitable. My truck is purely an “On Road” runner, but like most enthusiasts - they like to pursue the very best out of their vehicle that falls within their budget! Again a great informative video.

@@Filthymotorsports Glad to hear that. My truck has the original UK Ford spec front and rear shocks. The truck has also been lifted, 96cm front Arch clearance from road to wheel arch curvature maxima and likewise rear arch clearance is 108cm. The wheels are 33inch Aturro A/T tyres (33x12.50/20 Alloy RTG Lenso rims). An absolute honey of a truck but I’d certainly welcome your recommendation on piggy-back rears and just single (non reservoir) shocks on the front. Any recommendations that I can muse over?

OK, so I have a Chevy S-10ZR2 and it is a daily driver, but in the US Forest Wilderness areas, as I am a volunteer ranger. Having a dependable 4WD truck is essential. And after doing an upgrade on this truck five years ago, I am dropping control arms and shocks, which is not cool in the middle of a forest fire. I reached out to Ben, and he was very nice, almost too polite, telling me that my beloved S-10 is essentially worthless, and I need a new truck. He seems to love Chevy Silverados, Chevy Colorados, and Tacomas in that order. So with his advice I am looking for a new truck and will for sure put some King Coil Overs on that rascal, and will buy from Filthy Motorsports. Great guy, great business.

Love these videos! Learned so much! One thing, the “bubbles in the power steering fluid” analogy seems wrong to me. In a shock, the gas is intentionally there for a certain amount of compression. In power steering hydraulic systems or in brake hydraulic systems, air is not intentionally present and creates a large, undesired loss of movement when the piston or pump pushes fluid. I think this a correct way to think about it!
Just a note here: F1 cars don’t typically use coilovers, at least in the front. In the nose, there isn’t room so there’s typically a separate shock and the spring is a torsion bar. In the rear, things get a lot more exotic, it’s not uncommon for them to just use a heave spring and an anti roll bar, no corner springs, some number of shocks, and nowadays a device called an inerter, aka, the J damper.
Wish I saw this video before I bought Bilsteins. At least now I can plan for my next replacement.

Funny you mention valving....I used to race motocross and suspension tuning was such a huge thing.....if the suspension wasnt valved right for rider/weight and skill level it was very difficult to go fast and maintain control.....it wasnt until I actually rode "proper" suspension that I realized how important this was......the term " best you know is best you've ridden" is total truth!
So this certainly makes sense for vehicles as well

wow, thought i always wanted some fox shocks but after watching this i am definitely going the King Route. Seems to be cheaper than fox but better machining and assembly.
When it comes down to fit and finish, tolerances, custom options, availability of replacement parts, and being able to make changes to the shocks, King is going to be very hard to beat!
My personal expensive fox are junk. I had 3 go out on my 14' f350. 2 completely siezed up and one lost oil. Worst warranty also as you have to ship them to cali, and wait 2-3 weeks.

What King Shock do you recommend for the 2016 Toyota Tacoma?
Mine is a TRD Off Road 4x4. I'm looking for 2"-3" of lift and will be adding Camburg UCAs and OME Dakar leafs a few months after the shock install. Later I plan to upgrade the front bumper to an ARB with a winch.

What does everyone think of Fords Fox 2.0 performance tune shocks recently? Ford Ranger 2020 FX4- hunting roads
I know this is a late reply, but we just put out a Fox 2.0 ride review on our own 2020 Ford Ranger FX4, we liked them a lot, much different than the Bilstein 5100.
Well when I found this AMAZING VIDEO I was looking for information to support my opinion that Icon shocks were the way to go. Now I think without a doubt King shocks are the better choice :).
I have a street queen 2014 Raptor that sees little off road time. I started looking for something to help with the (for lack of a better term) Gallup effect from the rear end, after small bumps on the road. It makes one bump feel like two or three smaller ones. I love the truck but would like to improve the road manners a bit. Also looking to clear up axel wrap.
Would changing to a different shock in the rear help with that?
I just ordered my custom kings. I hope it comes out with the specs I asked for.
I truly appreciate the long and in depth video, you answered alot of my questions, I do have another though, I have a fabtech 6" lift on my tacoma and put on fox coilovers from bds, because I wanted something now, I'm the second owner of this truck, if I would have done it over I would have bought an unmodified tacoma and did a long travel kit.
my question to you is what would be with my current set up, what would be the best setup for logging roads with extreme washboard to give me the best ride, dual rate springs or add a bypass shock to my current setup? I was going to add hydraulic bumps, but I can't have both, do to space.
also I feel like I have my 16" 600 pound springs preloaded too much, should I go to a 700 pound spring? I don't have a winch or winch bumper but plan on both soon, any suggestions please
Hi Anthony, we've have very good luck with Tacoma's with 6" of lift, as long as you have realistic expectations. A 6" lift raised the vehicle 6" and should maintain factory suspension geometry (although, some budget lift kits actually reduce suspension travel!) As such, we would build Kings OEM kit to fit your lift kit and we would recommend contacting Deaver about a set of new rear leaf springs. That package set up with the proper springs and shock valving is about as good as it gets. Hope that helps!

What if you live on a washboard gravel road (apart from the rare times they grade it). The shocks on my 1.6 ton car are getting sloppy. Ignoring my horrible road most of my driving is fast winding back roads 50%, 40% highway, and 10% city. I'd consider going non OEM if it offered some improvements. I'd want it to handle the washboard gravel smoothly and without damage, and also corner confidently on the fast winding roads or as it does now. Is it possible for the suspension setup to also reduce road noise on gravel?
Absolutely, high performance shocks that dampen quickly offer very impressive results on washboard roads.

I have a 2012 FJ cruiser with an off road bumper and winch & a Pro comp 6 inch lift kit. What coils should I put on there for the weight. 550, 600lbs...? Also going to put a roof top tent in future
very detailed video. I appreciate the upload. However, I ordered a set of King 2.5 OEM replacements and had to get them re-valved by king and later my a local shop because they were so terribly stiff. The ride quality on road was unbearable. When I ordered them, there was no option for the click adjusters, which today I view as 100% necessary. I ran them hard for 4 years and they really were tough but I found the ride to be terrible. I swapped them out for icons and have been much happier--but with the adjusters its apples to orange. I just suggest anyone watching this order shocks with adjusters regardless of what brand you run.

I own a 2016 Ram 1500 V6 3.0L Eco Diesel and added Fox 2.5 w/ external reservoir DSC. I called Fox and this is the first time they have an Eco Diesel with the recommended coilovers, but there is a fine line of clearance between Fox base of coilover and front axle. I just put them on last week, and they kept leaning me to say I slammed it offroad. I honestly just put it on and have not been off the road, literally. And for all that fun, this is more for RV trailer. Any ideas for lower control arms or other fixes for clearance?

Have a 2017 Tundra TRD Pro - been contemplating an ICON stage 7, but with total chaos UCA's. Watched this video and now wondering if there's a better option to the ICON. Every 3 to 6 months I tow a 7x16 cargo trailer anywhere from 500 to 4,000 miles - depending on where the next assignment is. With the Bilstein TRD Pro "off-road" stock setup, even with the trailer loaded properly, the rear drops quite a bit and is not super confidence inspiring while at speed. I want a cush ride on and off road, but don't want to sacrifice support when towing. Not looking for a "bro" lift.

I have a 2016 Tacoma with a BDS 4 inch lift kit I'm running 32 inch tires on 18 inch rims . I'm looking at running coil overs in the front the problem is most companies don't offer a coil over for 4 inch lift kit's .

now i know the Raptor shocks are not tunable or adjustable from the outside but could i put different shim Stacks or different weight oil in them to get them to ride softer I have a set that I put on a 92 F150 short box low budget build I change the springs on the front shocks but when I get into the bump Zone it gets a little harsh

Dodge 2010 4 door 4 wheel drive with 10 foot flatbed. Ranch hand front bumper with 20k winch. Constantly hauling a skid steer on bumper pull trailer 13k with auger .also on pallet of cement on the flat bed. Mostly off road work building fences. Any hope for a smooth ride. Two hours of bumpy gravel non maintained road . Any hope?
Excuse me sir, can you use coilovers on front and rear. Do these coilovers have 2 adjusters like a dirk bike shock for hardness and softness and one for rebounding speed. I have a 2020 ram 2500 diesel and thinking of putting a 8" bds suspenion lift 4 link. Thank you much, look foward to hearing from you.
Great questions! Yes, we can do coilovers front and back, however, they are not ideal for towing or hauling so for that type of use we recommend keeping the rear leafs and pairing them with some heavily tuned shocks. Rebound damping adjustments are mostly beneficial for dirt bikes and ATVs where the rider's legs act as a secondary suspension. On a truck like this, we already know what the rebound damping needs to be. Hope that helps!
Any thought's on ADS? From what i understand, they started with a King platform and improved on it with things like a wiping seal, ceracoating, and all their shocks are basically built with their race components.
ADS makes a very good shock as well, right up there with King, Fox, and Radflo.

I love my kings on my Toyota, runs great and really appreciate high end quality, but is it possible to swap out the lower rod end on my 2.5 front coilovers to add more height like the smoothies?
How much total height are you trying to achieve over stock? Usually 3" is the safest point between excessive CV angles and performance/ride quality, and even Filthy will tell you not to go past 2.5". You could add a spacer to the shock tower in the front if you're just looking to go from 2" to 2.5" or 2.5" to 3". But i wouldn't make the jump to 3.5"
I LOVE your channel. You have helped me make alot of difficult decisions and saved me money. I am looking for a coil over shock to lift my mustang about 3 inches in the back and 2 inches in the front, with good handling characteristics? What would you recommend. Its a street car, but I just have to deal with alot of snow and have put AT tires on it that are only a inch bigger than oem tires.

I came across this video because I was looking for more info about "Spool Valve Shocks". I saw a video about a Chevy Colorado jumping at Pismo Beach and he talks about DSSV Shocks. I have a 98 5.9 ZJ with Rough Country Lift Kit Shocks and after an hour (offroad) the shocks got hot and for the rest of the day, the shocks never cooled off and didn't work. They're fine for the street; but, not much else. I figure I'll keep them for another few years; and hopefully King will develop "Spool Valves" by then; or, maybe you know, if they don't already have that? Either way, something to think about, for the future.
The DSSV shocks on the Colorado are stock on the ZR2 model, those aren't available by any aftermarket manufacturer today. They are extremely advanced shocks, typically on high end race cars, or the limited offerings on the ZR2 colorado or ZL1 Camaro
What would you recommend for a 2016 Jeep JK 4 door sport unlimited that's daily driven currently, but rock crawling/trail riding, and wheeling on the weekends?

I see the king suspension systems on Baja vehicles. How are they in winter? I live in north central ALBERTA, CANADA, my 2012 Ford Raptor, spends most time OFFROAD. Slow paced sand mogels in tight trails, high speed sand rough, crazy rough terrain. How do they take to the cold? -24' C, and colder at times

So I drive my tundra almost daily, but I’m currently on Fox 2.5s with DSC and billet UCAs. I’m looking into a trophy/prerunner truck setup since I do plan to run Baja with my team. Not really interested in ride comfort. I do have king triple bypasses already. Looking at a SUA kit instead of being linked. I’m currently running 35 MTs, ADV widebodied, and plan to run a GFC camper and 2 full spares. And upgrading to 37s eventually.

Filthy Motorsports nice bro, I've been searching your videos to see if it's possible to shrink down 'real shock design into RC, I'm talking about piston design and bypass tubes. owning a cnc machinine shop, I'd really like to have my rc be more scale
How do you know when you have over heated your stock shocks? I have driven my 2015 f150 FX4 at 35-40mph on pretty rough and rocky dirt roads for between 45-60 min and haven't noticed a change in how the shocks perform.
On an OEM truck with generic shocks (that includes any OEM "Rancho"/"Bilstein"/"Fox"), you wont really know since the shocks are junk to begin with. On a high grade shock you'll start to notice the chassis moving more than before and at high speeds it begins to feel sloppy and less controlled.
@Filthymotorsports so at about 36k miles I went to Rancho rs9000xls shocks and I thought they worked great. I put about 90k miles on them, and the front right finally broke the mount.
I have now gone to 2.5" sway a way coilovers w/resi shocks in front and 2.5 resinin rear. Night and day difference. I can now drive really rough dirt roads at 60mph + and it feels like I'm on a paved road road.
