Been there before Mat, there will still be enough meat on the damper bolt, once some heat is applied that will come out. I had the same fun doing the suspension on my Abarth. Just remember that you need to keep the flame away form the alloy arms. Good luck.
In future try using an impact wrench to free those stubborn bolts. I've had the same issue with snapping bolts using raw power lol. Good job on keeping the footage true though bud.
Was gonna say the same too, with that amount of torque on the bolt. An idea would be to heat it up real hot and then use an impact wrench or ring head spanner to get the bolt out... I'm gonna wager that although he had access to the lift, they probably didn't provide other tools..? Really love this guys humility when making videos though, good fun to watch!
@@thamil1365 Second option is to take a metal dowel/rod, spray some penetrating oil on the bolt and then hammer the top and surrounding areas next to the bolt. This sometimes needs a good 15-30 minutes of hammering... Every few minutes, try applying some force to the bolt and unscrewing it, if it budges then rotate it 45 degrees and back again, this just helps to prevent stripping the thread and to work the oil into the grooves.
That shit usually happens to me on a Sunday afternoon with no access to another car! Liberal spray with PlusGas a few hours before when doing suspension jobs.
Big shout out to Matt , ur attitude is everything man 🎉. I'm subscribed for half a year now and had to watch the last video of the Gt3 ❤ I just had to. Was waiting to see Freddy as well. You’re a legend Mat! I can’t believe how well you handled the bolts snapping… I would have exploded in violence or melted in tears. I really enjoy your videos buddy. Can’t wait to see the evolution of the S5! Have a good one (y)
this video saved my build. wasn't going to do it becasue of the pinch bolt. Now I know I don't have to replace it and it's an easier installation then I thought!
Oh Mat I understand exactly that feeling that moment where you think ‘has it snapped or has it loosened’. Your material is so interesting to watch and so true to life...no perfect scenarios here and fair play. Keep them coming and do, if at all possible make a video on the extraction of those bolts...would be so interesting... Keep up the excellent work.
Kudos to you mate for showing the honest world of the home modder. I mod bikes not cars and over the years can't tell you how many days I've had like this....but what I do know is 'I lose I learn' and the next mod is always deeper and better. And you're a natural in front of the camera, you'll get there......and then you'll be planning the next one ......🤔!
Fair play mat. You were still upbeat and positive even in the worst situation. It'll get sorted mate. Even if you have to replace more components. It's always doable. Great video as always
And another tip, if youre tackling something you expect to be tight or seized, give the nut/bolt a few really good raps with a hammer or spanner before turning it, it can make such a difference. I had a couple examples today where I gave a couple 22mm nuts a good bash today and the bash itself loosened them, whereas the same component on a different machine the day before was a real mission
Thats the trouble working with old cars. Really felt for you as it has happened to me plenty of times. As everyone said though impact driver and heat are your friends.
Its all learning dood :) Weld the biggest nut you can find/fit over the remainder of the bolts and impact gun em out. I would aim for a 30 or 32mm nut as the bolts you broke look to be m12 or m14 so you should be able to get a good weld bond between the center of the nut and the remaining stud, fill the nut in the center with weld and the heat transferred through to the hub should hopefully be enough to free it off. This problem is mainly due to GALVANIC CORROSION where mixed metals are in contact, i.e the alloy of the hub and the steel in the bolt, some say things like copper grease can help prevent this but it will always be a problem on vehicles with alloy subframes and suspension components. Good luck with the fix dood. Great videos :)
Galling is the primary cause of dissimilar material surfaces mating to one another. Galvanic corrosion is also big issue on machinery, but galling is more likely the cause in this instance.
Mat, I have only just started watching your vids, and enjoy them, don't listen or take any notice of haters buddy you can't please everyone and especially haters. Don't cater or try to win over haters, concentrate on the people who follow and enjoy your content, haters will always hate fella. I also owned one of these and to be fair wasn't my best experience with German cars I have had many, look out for driveshafts, CV joints, banana control arms, oil usage, input shaft for the steering, the list is endless with these and Audi's in general. Anyway keep up the good vids, I am very knowledgeable with cars but even if your a diyer your content and enthusiasm is what keeps me and others coming back. 👍
I like your work and enthusiasm for undertaking what may be a very simple job on a Honda, but is actually a lot more complicated on an Audi. I know from personal experience how much of a pain those pinch bolts on the front knuckles can be to take out. Air hammer usually needs to come to the rescue. For everything else, I would recommend a proper penetrating oil, (WD40 is just not strong enough) and more use of impacts and heat to break those stubborn bolts loose. Keep up the awesome work and updates on the S5!
We’ve all been there. The moment you think “just a couple bolts more and I’m done”, your mind starts wandering off to what you’ll be doing once you’re finished and boom ... add another few hours to your job time. Glad you’ve got somewhere to take it to get it sorted.
I really love this car, I grew up and it was my dream car but looking at what you went through to get it to what you want, it looks like a lot of work and problems. Big ups to you though, the dedication and passion is out of this world....and I hope your haters do not bring you down. Love from South Africa
Same thing happen to me on my b8 s-line wagon. Rear lower strut bolt snapped off!!! Took me a solid two hours of drill + heating then was able to extract it out.
Absolutely feel your pain as a hobbyist also... You have a very good attitude to these issues! I remember sheering a sub frame bolt off into a captive nut held in the floor of my old Mondeo . What a nightmare, cutting out the floor to get to the nut.
I am sorry that the bolts snapped, not the end of the world. I am confident that you will carry out this repair. It is not fair, I say good luck to you and i look forward to the next video.
just a tip for anyone interested in taking the pinch bolt out from the top, when it is seized in there, which it likely will be. Break the head off the bolt by loosening it untill it snaps, then tighten the nut on the opposite side, this will pull the bolt through, because the bolt only has a part thread at the end you will need to take the nut off and add washers from time to time, but eventually it will come all the way out.
Your best bet to get those bolts outbid a tungsten carbide drill bit along with some kind of cutting fluid you will be able to drill within a few mm of the bolt size and put the drill in reverse and the snapped bolt will come out with it. Hope this helps.
I really thought that you were a licensed Mechanic? You’ve given me a little more faith fixing my Saab 9-3 which always has something that needs fixing. Enjoy your vids.
That's a real shame Mat - hate even hearing that sound when a bolt /pin snaps I had a big issue with a A4 in the past with all four bolts relating to me replacing the front disks, all 4 bolts needed replacing and were £10 each Was also sold the wrong disks ''sold me disks for a merc'' and didn't notice until the box was opened
Unlucky with that last one! You should use an impact gun to free the rust. Failing that get a blowtorch heat it up and then cool it with water, it cracks up all the rust and frees it.
drill holes like half diameter of broken bolts and use good quality broken bolts extractor, also you can heat it up little bit that bolt and knock it few times before driling
You say you get stick for not doing a step by step, but that’s exactly what I like about your channel. I like my cars but would probably never attempt anything like this myself - but I like to see other people doing it. I don’t want a 3 hour tutorial. If I did, I’d go somewhere else! I think UK weather makes that large bolt seized. I gave up on that bolt and visited a tire shop.. The guy used a fat 3ft long bar..I was scared it would break like yours but eventually came off.
I have replaced the front shocks on the A5 but stuck on the rear shock bolt. I really thought the rear be easy compared to the front but really scared I may snap the bolt like you did.. I would cry if that happened to me :(
