  • @MakeVarahHappen
    @MakeVarahHappen 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

    I think the thing with Crim and art is that the SL art isn't, in a word, substantive enough? It's hard to explain but they intentionally try to feel out of place so you smile and move on and don't think about it. Pokemon fans FIEND for the next clay sculpture. They talk about it all the time, they anticipate the next time the artist will make a piece, and they all have their favorites. I think the comparison is when Kaldheim came out an artist *actually carved a saga into wood.* Victor Adame Minguez has over 160 pieces for magic, and has done that once. Weird art is for weirdness sake in magic, it's not to actually explore art beyond the novel.
    I also think "give me a vanilla version" is part of the problem. Think of Soul Shatter from ZNR. That is not a normal magic card, even in its most basic printing. There should be a line where you can have the base version of a card not be this same-y humanoid-realistic-fantasy and not be movie posters. I should be allowed to crack an uncommon in a pack and fall in love with it because it's just not the same, and have the be the same experience anyone can have with that card.

  • @MakeVarahHappen

    Unintended consequences are part of magic. We don't errata away combos, we just remove cards. It gets arbitrary quick, decreases player trust in their cards, and spits in the spirit of brewing. And that's without getting into the fact that commander isn't run by wotc.

    • @PlayMadness
      @PlayMadness 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      In hard core competitive Magic, it can be a tiny edge to have matching basics. If your hand is revealed to your opponent and they see that the only land you have is Mountain 253, then next turn you play Mountain 288, they know you drew a Mountain and they still know your whole hand. Matching basics means they still have one card unknown, which they will then play around. These effects are way less common in commander, and commander players are rarely, if ever, going to care enough to note revealed cards and track them, so it's less important in that format.

    In my Abzan landfall deck, long ago before the days of Thalia and The Gitrog Monster, I played Teneb, the Harvester because it didn’t betray what I was doing, I didn’t need to cast it, but if I had extra mana (as you do in landfall) I could play it and activate it for mana. Teneb was extra icing, not the cake itself.
    But then I also have decks like Glissa Sunsseker mono green control that does not function without the commander. It was the cog that powered the machine.

That way they can't just be attacked directly and can't defend themselves, which I always thought was stupid, and can participate in combat, but can't just get removed by a board wipe or removal unless it specifies nonland permanent or planeswalker. They should've been designed that way from the start imho. I think that's what they should do. Maybe they could integrate it into the story arc and restore all the sparks. IDK all I know is this is a great idea. Hire me Wizards 😂

    What a fun topic this week!
    @23:30:
    This was the exact process by which my 'Abzantment' deck has evolved. It started as a deck shell built around cards being both enchantment and creature (after playing Tuvasa, Sunlit, it dawned on me that if i make 1 Heliod, God of the Sun token, i'd net 2 mana with Serra's Sanctum and Gaea's Cradle out).
    The first iteration paired Sidar Kondo and Ravos Soultender. When Kodama of the East Tree was released, it bumped Sidar. Then, the considerably more synergistic Myrkul, Lord of bones was at the helm... briefly. The most recent update sees Anikthea, Hand of Erebos as its general, which was a hugely beneficial upgrade. Having a commander that's 2 less mana, AND more viable/relevant to the strategy, the substitution was a no-brainer.
    As more optimal legends were released with synergies directly enhancing the strategy, the deck upgraded with each iteration.
    Thank you, you magical golden fishes, for the content and entertainment!

    Richard is so spot on about mixing up your cool looking lands in your commander decks. Seth over here sound elitist like play 20 white decks if you want to play your 20 different basic plains. Haha I'll play all the foil shadowmoor or time spiral basics I have as long as it doesn't mess up the theme of the deck, then I'll throw in other things like a 7th edition basic cause that was the first pack I ever opened. ❤

      Now that you mention it, this might be the reason I prefer matching basics as well.
      I do what I can to simplify my game experience even so far as not running broad tutors. If a tutor can find more than 1 or 2 things in my deck, I'm going to spend more cognitive energy deciding my play than I want to devote during gameplay. I spend my cognitive energy on deck building instead so that my deck can play itself during gameplay and I can socialize and not monopolize game time.

    So this has been a favorite episode. I have so much to comment about it.
    1. Mismatched lands 100%, it is helps me to blink out my deck and some much amazing art to showcase.
    2. As far building a deck then selecting a commander, remember when precons had 2 or 3 options for commanders, it is an amazing way depowering your deck without having a couple different deck. I also miss the old commander rules, especially being able to tuck someone's commander.
    3. I'm I don't know how Crim or anyone else feels but I think proxies really help with art issue. I also like altered art. Favorite of mine was Perilous Myr reimagined as a Bob-Omb still have then from my Heartless Summoning deck.
    4. Im a double sleeve person. Sideloaders inners with smoke backs and toploader outers.

    I have a Tinybones chaos mana base: every art is different. Some are full, some foil, some white border, etc. It tilts folks so hard which is perfect for the commander. The highlight is a white border swamp sharpied black and signed in gold by an old friend. I need to get more high quality ones like a Full Text swamp.
    The rest of my decks have matching basics that suit the commander. Ixalan basics in Gishath, Brothers War lands with robots for Kotori vehicles, Rakdos guild kits for my hell deck lead by Lord of Riots, Eldraine swamps and Origins plains with castles in the art, etc.
    I see the merits to both sides but prefer matching generally.

    I absolutely love the idea of a movie based on the Brother's War as a big fantasy battle epic - I actually had a really long shower thought session thinking of what the movie would look like - here's what I came up with;
    we tell the story from Ashnod's perspective ~ I figured telling it from both the brother's sides would be way too long, and a bit tedious if we only have a two hour movie to work with ~ we also don't cover the books word for word, because the Brother's war spans at least 60 years of constant epic (tragic) battles, starting when they were both little boys. with Ashnod, we would start the story with the (I hope I got this right, I don't exactly remember the order of events in the book) murder of the Yoshan warlord and Ashnod's imprisonment. we tell parts of Urza's story through what she hears and witnesses, and then tell parts of Mishra's story through the time she rescues Tawnos from the Fallaji prison ~ have a romantic subplot in the movie as well, whilst also showing Ashnod's ruthlessness when torturing Tawnos ~ we can then foreshadow the oncoming war and what's becoming of Mishra by her meeting the disfigured priests of Gix and witnessing the metal parts in his body. she could even briefly see Gix himself as I don't think the movie would have time to introduce this huge horrific demon out of nowhere
    I also imagine there would be some flashbacks of the brothers' past relating to the stones, specifically about Tocasia's death, I think that's a particularly impactful scene
    the last fourth of the movie would begin with her taking the Golgothian Sylex from Loran and rushing to bring it to Argoth, to the final war ~ she gives it to Tawnos; here we either switch to Tawnos' point of view for a moment or we focus on Ashnod, running to hide as the world around her explodes
    a silent shot of the frozen Terisiare, foreshadowing of a possible sequel with Urza's multicolored eyes opening
    the end ^^ being a nerd is so much fun sometimes ~ if anyone has any thoughts or anything they would change, feel free to let me know~
    p.s. this would of course all be told with a lot of character, Ashnod somehow has the ability of being a character who is simultaneously absolutely dispicable, pretty much views life as a disposable resource, and probably holds some kind of admiration for phyrexians in her (or we insert that into her character in the movie); at the same time she's set on destroying them and ending the war ~ "they call me the uncaring, but on the contrary, I care a lot - just in my own way" or some line like that when she takes the Sylex from Loran
    p.s.s. I definitely left out a lot of the story, I just don't think all of it can be told in one movie; the book itself already has so many storylines that skip around, like the one with Urza's wife

    My rule with drinks, that my playgroup likes and follows, is that only spillproof containers sit on the table. Any other drinks have to be on the floor, a windowsill, whatever it takes to *not* be a danger to cards. Because of that, we’ve had no problems with single sleeving decks, and it saves time.
    The LGS in my area effectively has the same rule, and it’s where I picked it up from. Someone spilled a drink and an expensive deck had to be replaced. I’ll also add that someone literally dunked a double sleeved Gilded Lotus in coffee to prove that it was good, the card is a legend at the LGS because while it wasn’t physically damaged, it wouldn’t lose the smell of coffee.

    How to fix planeswalkers. All planeswalkers have:
    During your opponent's turn, if this card loses 3 loyalty counters, prevent all remaining damage and this card phases out. (Or however it needs to be worded to mean they can take 3 damage max during opponent's turns and then phase out)
    Targeted removal still works, you provide an additional strategy for dealing with static abilities while providing survivability from multiple opponents.
    The only question I'd have about it would happen during your turn. Maybe it's a static ability at all times that's a "may" ability instead?

    Richard is right... the easiest way to bling a deck is to bling the basic lands. That's why I buy full sets of matching lands. My Selenia deck in particular I was very happy I was able to collect a full set of Tempset bascs and a few of the non-basics from that set too. Same with my shrines deck, all special Neon Dynasty lands that I got from draft packs.
    I can't stand card flicking either. All I think about is how dinged and scratched the sleeves are getting. I want those sleeves to look as pristine as possible years later.
    Anybody who's ever spilled a drink on their Doubling Season will know that double-sleeving is absolutely NOT a scam. It was not created by the card sleeve corporations, it was created by players that would jam two regular sleeves over their cards. If you double-sleeve properly by removing all the air it doesn't look any worse and you only have to do it once ever. Triple-sleeving is apparently popular for people who use custom sleeves and don't want the artwork to get worn out.

    2) Double sleeving helps curling and if you have small sleeves like katana, still looks awesome. Also less damage from removing card from deck to deck or transforming it.
