- YAMAHA RD350 is a two-stroke motorcycle produced by Yamaha from 1973 to 1975. It evolved directly from the piston port (pre-reed valve intake tract), front drum-braked, five-speed Yamaha 350 cc "R5".
The engine is an air-cooled, parallel twin, six-speed (in some markets, such as the UK, the first model was sold in five-speed form), reed valve-equipped intake tract two-stroke engine. The bike is usually referred to as a sport bike.
Yamaha RD350 was the most powerful motorcycle of its time, presenting itself as the exact opposite of Royal Enfield Bullet 350. It was known for mad speeds and lightening fast acceleration from its 2-stroke 347cc, twin cylinder engine. It produces 30.5 BHP in the Indian version while the Japan version was good for 39 BHP. Weighing just 155 kg, it was surely the KTM 390 Duke of its time, rivaling none other than RE Bullet 350. The Indian version even came with just 180mm front drum brake, making it the most dangerous package of all time.

Ivd ridden exotics like Mv Augusta, touched 240km/hr in hayabusa but Rd350 and japanese rx100 are still my favourites. The throttle response and pleasure of riding is still unmatched!!

Just went for a 480 km ride from Hubli to Goa and back via Malgavi, Kavlesad view point, Amboli waterfall, Anjun, Calangute beach,Panaji,Dandeli...in a single day...in a RE Hunter 350. You can imagine the halath of my hands and buttocks....

@@invoker_tm7556it’s US spec. Mileage is around 15 I guess. For me having RD350 is more for pride, mileage is not primary factor 😊

I rode this bike way in 1986 from calicut to ernakulam in 2 hrs.40 to 2hrs 50 mints twice (200K.M.) , that time there were no trichur bypass and once in less then 30 mints from Kottarakkara to Pathanamthitta via adoor after 9 p.m. This bike is super, low height you can tackle all hairband and blind turning of kerala's in high speed. I wish i had kept one.

I owned a RD 350 HT model at one time sold it 20 years back due to some financial issues but I would say what a bike an poet it had
Great power the silencer sound is like music to the ears. It was very rare mechanics could tune n repair it right parts u used to get it at chor bazar really misss the bike.
This is something next level still rules the road, the acceleration sound was just symphony to ears nostalgic, like re- living the 90s era

I was lucky to own this machine for more than 3/3.5 years. Was forced to sell it after had a really big crash. But when ever I hear the word RD350, I travel back in time and live my RD days again.
Just realized the intake revs have a sweet, nearly inline 4 scream. Oh how I miss this baby. I hold the RD up there with the MT-01 and the Crossplane R1. Absolutely wonderful sounding bikes!

Back in 1979 my girlfriend wanted an RD 350B it was an immaculate purple paint bike and the guy said it had a Stan Stephan's engine, yea right. One ride of the thing, it was unreal. I rode a Kawasaki 500H1B and this thing was as quick with the front wheel going airborn in 1st 2nd and 3rd yet reed valve made it trickle around just fine. Estimations were 45 HP, Id still have one today, that sound just so crisp oh and a front brake that worked in the 70s!

I spent around 10 years touring all over south india on an RD. When I started out, the bike was terribly unreliable and I knew next to nothing about repair or about the RD.
There wasn't an option but to carry pretty much everything from spare cables and jets to a CDI kit. One side of the saddle bag was full of tools and such, the thrice-damned magnet locker tool included.
As years passed by and I learnt more and more, I did up the bike to be unwaveringly reliable - the last 3-4 years I never even carried a spanner along. The bike used to run just fine, all day every day.
Looking back, the acquired knowledge was of three parts essentially - knowledge of motorcycle operation and repair in general, specific RD350 skills, and last but not the least, knowing where to get genuine spare parts from. You can have an ocean of the first two skills, but if you don't have the last one - you're still fucked my friend.
I still remember that exact position of the coil plate where the timing was just perfect - slightly retarded - for the highway but was not the sharpest in traffic. Used to ride out of city feeling ever so mildly unsettled with the bike's performance iin traffic, knowing fully well that I will be compensated for the next few hundred kms with splendid highway performance.
I like watching RD videos and feeling nostalgic but I doubt I will ever own an RD again. I have an Z900 and am pretty happy with that. There is more, much more, of an adrenalin rush for sure, but yeah it doesn't have that soul stirring quality of a well tuned RD. Well, I had my soul stirred for 10 years, so I'm content with that. Hell.
I have an RD350LC here in Ireland , I loved riding the old Enfields when I visited India .

I don't believe that you uprated RD 350 to 39 BHP. The initial models came with 39 bhp.
I had purchased it new, When it became available in India.
I also had a RD 90, which I purchased second hand in Bardoli, Gujrat. Riding it home ( 800 kms) was fun. Its engine sceaming at top of the pitch was music without comparison. But this was something like 35/36 years before. Sadly I am an old man now, living on past glories. But I had a lot many exotic bikes of the day and had fun riding them all over India. list of the bikes include AJS 500 cc single, a Matchless 350, Triumph Tiger 500 twin of 1952 it used to take me to 95 mph., NSU Max 250 single ( this was a real gem, it's response on the road was exilarating.) A BMW 650. a Velocette LE and a lot many. But Roads in those days were not as good.

Your RD is on RAW! I picked up a 1975 RD250 over the weekend, it's in rough shape and I'm not sure I want to go thru the effort to restore it, might be better to mod the Hell out of it and keep it brutal. I'm interested in what mods are popular in Bombay. Ive shipped XS forks to customers in India for a dual disc setup, that seems to be the most popular upgrade. What did you do to increase the HP?

I thought the bhp figures were a bit on the low side, but looked on Wikipedia and apparently India had a 27bhp and 30.5bhp version where the Europeans had the full power 39bhp version.
