- John Ward began as the "Voice of the Vols" in 1965, following Vol Lead Announcers George Mooney who's last season was 1965, and before George, Lindsey Nelson who went on to CBS radio fame, covering Notre Dame Football for 9 seasons, then the NY Mets and San Francisco Giants baseball programs. Lindsey Nelson was the first Radio person of the Vol Network starting in 1948. The Vols have always had a strong announcer at the Mic, and when they recruited John Ward, the found just the man who took us through the 1998 National Championship season, announcing earlier his retirement, and being blessed with a National Championship. He married Barbara, my second cousin, so he gets top billing on my page.
I am a diehard Alabama fan that lives in Knoxville. John Ward was an awesome play by play guy. He brought the game to life. When he was in the box it was definitely better to mute the tv and turn on the radio. RIP John Ward
My dad did yard work for him in Knoxville they were pretty close i miss him
All true Vols fans did that- tv on mute, and The Voice of the Vols playing instead.
My father didi that too. He died September 9 2020 just before The season had started

Though I never met John Ward, I spent so much time listening to him I feel like I lost one of my best friends

My favorite call ever by John Ward, was against Vandy in Nashville.. "Willie Gault has the kick on the 1, the 15, the 20, the 25....... then a very long silence and a lot of yelling over the radio.."Ladies and Gentlemen, Willie Gault has taken it to the State Capital, It's Touchdown Tennessee!"

Grew up listening to Mr. Ward with my dad. I still get tears in eyes when I hear his voice say "It's football time in Tennessee!" or "Ten five, four, three, two, one...Give him Six! I thank you for the treasured memories sir, and may you rest in peace.

I always loved listening to John, as a child. He was so enthusiastic, and so into the games. It was almost like you was actually at the games just way he got you into it. There won’t ever be another John Ward! I was 9 back when he done his last game, thankful I got listen to him for a little while. He ended his career the best way possible, announcing that the national champion was clad in big orange!

It has not been the same since Mr Ward retired. How I long for the days when I turned down the TV and turned up the radio.

RIP John Ward. A legend! Growing up I would listen to Tennessee football and basketball games with John Ward announcing. Never forget "It's Football Time in Tennessee", "Give Him Six, Touchdown Tennessee", and the simple "bottom" during the VOLS basketball games! Sure do miss him!
For many years John Ward was the only way I was able to enjoy Tennessee Football. Just me, John and a car radio. Thank you John Ward.

I remember watching the games as a kid with the sound turned down and John Ward on the radio turned up.
I recall Mr. Ward's brief retirement press conference: He brought a prepared statement, then read..."It's time", & left the podium. Been sad ever since, & now that haunting phrase reminds all of us of the perspective of Life. Go Big Orange & R.I.P. John Ward.

Nothing against Bob Kesling but John Ward is the first Vols announcer I ever heard and I never have gotten used to anyone else yet.He had a way of making the game interesting for Vol fans no matter the score.Watching these videos and listening to him and Bill Anderson doing commentary gives me chills just like it always did when John announced "IT'S FOOTBALL TIME IN TENNESSEE".Miss those days.

I’m a died in the wool Larry Munson guy but I gotta tell you John Ward was fabulous.
4:00 is one of my favorite calls. I remember that play against Iowa. We won by 1 point. Can't argue with the "No Sir Ree" call against Florida either. Also there is another one where John said "Does anyone see a yellow marker on the field? I don't. Touchdown Tennessee !!"
I always liked his occasional call of a field goal:
“It’s high enough, It’s far enough. Did he make it?….(in a low growling voice) He made it…… GOOOOOOOOOOODDDDDDDDD!”
I remember watching Tennessee's victory over FSU for the championship.... turned the TV down and listened to his radio broadcast. To be able to go out with his last called game winning the championship was a fitting way to end his career. RIP........

I grew up listening to John Ward with my grandad on the radio. The memories. I would rather just hear John Ward than watch the game on TV - I used to listen on the radio while it played on the TV.
I have no association with the Vols or Tennessee football, I am not a Tennessee fan, but I have a wealth of respect for this guy here. He was a great broadcaster

Practice starts 8-1 with all the check-ins, there is a practice schedule posted on the Knox Sentinel easily read I think with no restrictions.. there are a lot of new Vols this year, 32 and 6 Legacy players starting in 2014 including the Berry twins (Eric Berry's younger twin brothers) and Dillon Bates, the 4th child of Dallas Cowboy great Bill Bates.. Bill had triplets the first time out and 2 D-1 players in that group + 1 sorority girl he tells me.. lives near me in Jacksonville Fl..

John Ward did Volunteer basketball, but we would never know it from this video. He started doing hoops in 1965, three years before he also took over play-by-play for football when George Mooney retired. Some Ernie-Bernie action should have been included here
The story goes, about the towel: He was doing a Tennessee game with Nowell Blanchard at Starkville, Miss. It was freezing cold outside and where he was broadcasting from was had a drafty window nearby. Ward's throat started to get sore and hoarse. He feared he wouldn't be able to finish the game. Blanchard went to the bench and got a towel for him to put around his neck to warm his throat. It worked, even through overtime, he finished the broadcast.
I got his autographed picture...got it framed up and hung on the wall
