  • Despite their size, these French chairs are emblematic of fine domestic art furniture made in Paris during the Bourbon restoration. This underrepresented period is late in the traditional timeline of good, handmade, and therefore deeply beautiful antiques. It is however the chronological apex of centuries of the evolution of master furniture making which began at the end of the Middle Ages.
Restoration furniture is robust, and neoclassical, like empire furniture which preceded it, but it is more elegant, and softened with graceful curves. It can be seen and appreciated thus as the successful blending of Napoleonic grandeur and the elegance of the old regime, the bourbon monarchy which was briefly restored to power from 1815-1830.
