- Better than Rafale, LCA Mk2 to roll out by end of year 2024 - ADA
The MoU signed in June 2023, for the manufacture of GE F414 engine which will power LCA Mk2 with 80% indigenous content has accelerated the LCA MK2 development.
As per the report published by the TOI, Prabhulla Chandran VK, director of avionics and weapons systems at the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) has said that the Tejas Mk 2 light combat aircraft (LCA) could be ready for its maiden flight by 2025.
He said it will take 18 months from now to roll out (the plane), and the first flight will take another six months. In summary, the roll out of LCA Tejas Mark2 will be by end of year 2024 and its first flight in mid of 2025.
He also said that with the pact signed between HAL & GE, 90% of the components of the fighter jet will be indigenous. The focus will be on state-of-the-art radar systems, weapons, and other capabilities (all made in India, barring the ejection seat and a few sensors). The one-engine fighter will be better than Rafale. This fighter plane will have only one version. We might go in for a trainer plane later.
Looking at the progress being made LCA MK2 may enter into production by 2028-29. The fighter jet will greatly boost the IAF capabilities which is struggling with declining fighter jet squadron.
LCA Mark 2 critical to boost IAF squadron strength
Indian Air force will lose 3 squadrons of Jaguars & 3 squadrons of Mig-21 by 2030. The loss of 6 Squadron will be fulfilled by the addition of 83 Tejas Mark-1A. However, the squadron strength of IAF will be still close to 31 or 32 which is much lesser than the sanctioned squadron strength of 42. LCA Mark-2 is also going to replace the fleets of MiG-29 & Mirage-2000 when they are slated to decommission. Therefore, Indian air force has high hopes on LCA Mark-2 program to supplement its fast-depleting squadron strength. The air force has committed for 6 squadrons of LCA Mark-2 in Phase-I and additional 4 squadrons in Phase-II.

So 3000 planes is much less India like usa can go for 3-4 types of planes with multiple production lines of 50-100 planes per year based on big order and no cost is too great if we have to keep our country safe and our economy is growing as it grows so will threats from our enemies so to counter that India has to spend more on defence we can easily spend atleast 120 billion USD a year and gradually increase it as our economy increases take it to 3 percent of our gdp
