We are sandwiched between Van Buren and Madawaska in a little sliver of a place called Grand Isle. Beautiful wilderness and the great Misty Meadows farm and restaurant.
Great! the farm is not mine but it is a gem in Grand Isle. We just have a camp in the vast wilderness there along the ITS which you are welcome to drone from. I enjoy your videos!! @@TheseMaineTowns
Is there still a restaurant in Grande Isle??? I was in Van Buren a few years ago and there are no restaurants in that town. I had to drive to Caribou to eat.
Oh my gosh!! 😱 I’m 29, live in California, and have never even laid eyes on my Grandmas home of Van Buren ME! This was absolutely amazing .. thank you for the gift! I feel so much closer to my grandma. I hope I can visit one day.
Great video - What natural beauty in this area. I can almost feel the fresh, crispy air through the screen. I look forward to visiting in near future, hopefully summer 2025. I’m about 18 hours south and am working on putting together a picturesque/scenic route to get there
Did you know that Van Buren has the ONLY dedicated Pickleball courts north of Bangor?? ALL other courts are lines added to tennis courts… not ours. Come by the Town Office on your next visit… we’ll give you a tour of EVERYTHING Van Buren has to offer.
I did not know that! Awesome. I have a friend here in Bangor that is addicted to Pickleball. Perhaps I can swing by next summer. Thank-you for watching.
My grandparents’ home (and my grandfather’s office) was on the corner of Main Street & high street, from what I understand. My 93 year old father, Marcel, is the only one left of his siblings. I’ve never been to Van Buren, but I’d like to see it someday. My dad has so many stories about growing up there.❤
Thank you for sharing. Over the past 40 years I have seen a lot of the small towns in the County shrink in size. I just moved back to Fort Fairfield and am loving the peace and quiet. The people here are so genuine and nice. The best time to visit here is the third week of July when all the potato blossoms are out and you can drive for miles looking at flowers.
Towns between Van Buren and Madawaska would make a nice drive. I have driven all of US 1 and 1a from Fort Kent to Key West Fl the coast of us is beautiful
Completely agree, I flew the drone around the big church in Lille and will do that area some time in the future. St. David has an enormous part in Acadian history.
Hi John, you would have known me as Mark from Printworks/Northeast Publishing. I will always remember you for your kindness, and warm personality. Happy New Year.
My family and I went there when I was 12 from CT. visiting friends in '96. Lifelong memories. Stop signs were in french and if you went on their front porch and looked a certain direction you'd see the Canadian flag. Crossed the border one night just to say we went to Canada. On our way back home we got caught in a whiteout and had to turn around and wait out the blizzard. I was just thinking about that time so I decided to see if there were any videos posted. Thanks for sharing this 🙏🏻
Borderview Manor has changed a bit. Not the same family atmosphere in there as was in the 1980s. Both my Grandfather and Grandmother ended their days on earth in that facility back in the 1980s. It was the best old folks home in the world back then.
My grandparents founded the nursing home, but unfortunately both passed very young. I sometimes wonder how much more they could have accomplished if they had the time.
@TheseMaineTowns I'm from Georgia and looking to retire soon. My mother's family is from New Sweden, Maine and I like the St. John river area of Hamlin. Canoeing, fishing, snowmobile trails. Anything of interest. Thank you!!
@@Stoshic Super, it may take a bit of time as I live in Bangor. I will check on Wednesday to see if I have any video or photos of Hamlin. My camp is a half hour south of there in Fort Fairfield so it wouldn't take much effort to zip up there and get some footage. .....if it will ever stop raining!
Is there any town or village in Maine where you are likely to be spoken to in french, where it is the habitual language? Blessings to our french brothers from Québec
Yes, Fort Kent, Madawaska, Van Buren, and many of the hamlets along the St. John River. There are some in Lewiston, Sanford, Biddeford, Augusta and even Brunswick, though the usage is dying out there.
I too look forward to a road trip all the way up us 1 next summer - I certainly like to respect the culture and history of anywhere I visit; I take it English will get me through the visit without incident ?

I am really glad you mentioned the farm. We just moved back to The County and I will head your way with cameras when you reopen for the winter season.

@@Brooklynbronk2 We are a pretty nice and loving family 😅😉
Haha same! Live in CA and mom was born and lived there until a teenager. Want to visit one day. Her parents were Norman and Martha Thibodeau.
Definitely a more cheerful take on my dad’s hometown than “Beneath the Harvest Sky”!
Thank you for your kindness.
I'm from sidney, ME! Love this! Keep it up!!
I love the Sidney area. I’m working on Lincolnville right now. Stay tuned, thanks for watching.
I truly enjoyed your video Mark, great job on your commentary

I live about 45 minutes south of VB and it was about 45 degrees this morning. Nice and crisp. Thanks for watching.
Wow, this was my dad's hometown many years ago. I think as a small child I lived there for a couple of years before the family moved to Hartford.
It’s a great area and town. Thank you for watching.
