The cave bear (Ursus spelaeus) is a prehistoric species of bear that lived in Europe and Asia during the Pleistocene and became extinct about 24,000 years ago during the Last Glacial Maximum.
Both the word cave and the scientific name spelaeus are used because fossils of this species were mostly found in caves. This reflects the views of experts that cave bears may have spent more time in caves than the brown bear, which uses caves only for hibernation. It is thought to have been largely herbivorous.
Many caves in Central Europe have skeletons of cave bears inside, such as the Heinrichshöhle in Hemer and the Dechenhöhle in Iserlohn, Germany. A complete skeleton, five complete skulls, and 18 other bones were found inside Kletno Bear Cave, in 1966 in Poland.[2] In Romania, in a cave called Bears' Cave, 140 cave bear skeletons were discovered in 1983.[3]
Cave bear bones are found in several caves in the country of Georgia. In 2021, Akaki Tsereteli State University's students and a lecturer discovered two complete cave bear skulls, with molars, canines, humerus, three vertebrae and other bones, in a previously unexplored cave.
Smilodon is a genus of felids belonging to the extinct subfamily Machairodontinae. It is one of the best known saber-toothed predators and prehistoric mammals. Although commonly known as the saber-toothed tiger, it was not closely related to the tiger or other modern cats. Smilodon lived in the Americas during the Pleistocene epoch (2.5 mya - 10,000 years ago). The genus was named in 1842 based on fossils from Brazil; the generic name means "scalpel" or "two-edged knife" combined with "tooth". Three species are recognized today: S. gracilis, S. fatalis, and S. populator. The two latter species were probably descended from S. gracilis, which itself probably evolved from Megantereon. The hundreds of specimens obtained from the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles constitute the largest collection of Smilodon fossils.
Overall, Smilodon was more robustly built than any extant cat, with particularly well-developed forelimbs and exceptionally long upper canine teeth. Its jaw had a bigger gape than that of modern cats, and its upper canines were slender and fragile, being adapted for precision killing. S. gracilis was the smallest species at 55 to 100 kg (120 to 220 lb) in weight. S. fatalis had a weight of 160 to 280 kg (350 to 620 lb) and height of 100 cm (39 in). Both of these species are mainly known from North America, but remains from South America have also been attributed to them. S. populator from South America was the largest species, at 220 to 436 kg (485 to 961 lb) in weight and 120 cm (47 in) in height, and was among the largest known felids. The coat pattern of Smilodon is unknown, but it has been artistically restored with plain or spotted patterns.
In North America, Smilodon hunted large herbivores such as bison and camels.

I was a kid in the hospital, back in 72. The kid in the bed next to me was older, but his parents brought him a model of a car. I got out of my bed, and watched him build his car, and all of a sudden, I was hooked! My mom and dad would bring one of the old Aroura prehistoric kits to me , almost every day I was hospitalized. When I finished one, they would bring it back home, and bring me another one. I was there for almost two weeks, but when I got home, my mom had hand painted every one! She was a great painter, and artist. They all looked amazing! All my siblings would bring them to their 4th grade class, because that’s when we learned about dinosaurs and prehistoric animals. Every time they did their “tour” , I’d fix whatever was broken, and they’d go back again, next year. I loved those old kits, and believe that they are one of the reasons why I’m still obsessed about models!

I was a nine year old kid when Aurora produced these kits. My parents got me every one of them. Loved them for that, and I loved building these kits. I only wish I still had them.
Thanks for taking me back in time to a fun period of model building and collecting.

I always enjoy when you venture out of the ordinary and build these kinds of kits - they're simple to put together but the real challenge comes with getting the paint jobs to look spectacular and really bring them out. I like that these two actually have painting suggestions on the instructions.

Nice to see these kits re-released and full credit to Atlantis for including BOTH base parts in the Sabretooth kit (the second rocky base was an addition in later Aurora releases so will be of interest to collectors). Fun fact on that cave wall in the bear kit - you can use it to join two Prehistoric Scenes "The Cave" models together to make a completely circular cave - nice!

I would love to see all the Prehistoric Scenes back again so you could fit them all together as the one large display but I think a couple of them were lost (as far as the molds). I had them all except the T. Rex, as that was the priciest one and I was saving up for it right before they discontinued the line.
