    Are you guys following the Belgian football scandal? It's shaking the Belgian Football League (Jupiler ProLeague). Case is still pending. It's about money laundering, matchfixing and player representatives. The case is called: 'Propere handen'. Wich translates into : clean hands.

    Let's not forget to mention how David Meyler and Shane Duffy (Ireland) and Johnny Evans and Steven Davies (NI) both came together to visit the Children's Hospital in Dublin yesterday. They made the childrens day, most importantly. But it also shows how progressive things are going between our country and NI. The game will probably be boring, but that's not what matters, we must respect one another and set aside our differences. Come on you boys in green. ☘

No wonder people like McClean and Duffy decide to play for ROI. I think it creates quite a hostile environment for young NI catholics/nationalists who just want to play football but feel they cannot play for the country they were born in as their views arent considered

      However, the big complexity in that is that, under FIFA regulations, in the event of a political or sporting reunification of the Irish national team into one entity, the official governing body would be the IFA and the FAI would either have to merge, disband or gain official approval from the IFA to replace it as the governing body. The first option is likely but hard to see the FAI being happy to be seen as the body being absorbed by the IFA. The second wouldn't happen without a lengthy legal battle that would be difficult for the FAI to win and the third. Well again, the IFA wouldn't just step aside.

    • @samwilkinson2534
      @samwilkinson2534 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Football fans are much more 'hooligan' like than rugby fans and likely to cause injury but in rugby we dont see that and people are more civil.
      I couldnt imagine any unionist supporting it at all and obviously all political elements would need to be removed like the rugby games.

    • @ceannasai5731
      @ceannasai5731 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheGiantKillers How would the official governing body HAVE to be the IFA? The FAI have the stronger National team and the FAI have the stronger domestic team as was proving less then 12 months ago when Dundalk of the FAI smashed Linfield of the IFA 6-0 in the Union Cup. Also there is 26 counties in the FAI league as opposed to the 6 in the IFA ....
      Generally speaking I agree, it's not going to happen unless the NI teams disband their league and play in the FAI as no team in the FAI would even contemplate, nor their supporters of clubs, - playing in a 'fantasy' league in the IFA and having it registered there. Kieran Lucid and is Consumer Gangsters can keep backing up the wrong tree with that idea.
      If Cliftonville and other teams that see themselves as Irish in the North do what Derry City did then an All Ireland league and National team would be possible as the league in the IFA would turn to complete shite with no competition and basically a couple of 7 team leagues in the IFA - then the dream would become a reality but until then, it'll be the same old story.....

    • @TheGiantKillers
      @TheGiantKillers 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ceannasai5731 It's got nothing to do with on-field activity. It's to do with recognised rights to govern. Prior to 1950 both Associations were allowed to organise island-wide national teams. However, in 1950, when both entered the World cup, both wanted to enter as Ireland. FIFA wouldn't allow this and the two national associations signed up to an agreement that 1: The teams would be officially named Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. 2: Both sides would respect the boundaries of the other and not select players from the other jurisdiction. {Ironically at the time this was on the insistence of the FAI as they feared players south for the border would declare for Northern Ireland in order to play in the home Internationals.} 3: that the permanent rights to form any future all Ireland team remained with the IFA. This was agreed by the FAI. In 1997 point three was re-affirmed by FIFA when point 2 was abolished, and again the FAI agreed that, in the event of any future all Ireland team, the two boards would merge under the governance of the IFA and that the all Ireland team would be a successor to the Northern Ireland team. Much as the Germany team are a successor of the West Germany team. It's not about whose bigger, it's about who has been given the rights agreed by FIFA.

    Something to point out was that, in the 50s, both federations overlapped their cappings, so that a player was called up by both. FIFA had to interfere and state that players could only choose one federation to play for.

    Great video, showing your usual depth and class. On a positive note, after the '93 game it was reported that the N. Ireland captain Alan McDonald came into the Republic's dressing room and told them to go the USA and represent the whole Island. McDonald was from a Protestant/Unionist background but it shows that at least among players sport is bigger than sectarian politics. You can see the same positivity nowadays when both teams are away, there was a great camaraderie at the euros in 2016. I think a lot of people, myself included, hope that one day we'll have an all-island team, same as in Rugby, but either way it's great to see how far things have come.

    I'm from Belfast so I think I should add some insight in this.
    Roughly half of the population of northern Ireland do not support the NI national football team, and instead support the Republic of Ireland national football team. This is because many Irish-Catholics dislike the creation of Northern Ireland at all, as it is a gerrymandered state designed to give an ulster loyalist voting majority.
    Many Irish-Catholics caught within the new Northern Ireland state endured extreme discrimination at the hands of the ulster protestants (that controlled all aspects of political and economic power).
    Many professional Irish footballers from within NI that were good enough to play for the republic, did so. As the Irish-catholic communities look upon the Rep Ireland national team as representatives of the Irish people, and see the Northern Ireland team as the team that represents the ulster protestant colonists.
    Time's have changed though, and the NI national team has under went a heavy re-branding campaign to try and purge away the bitter taste of bigotry and discrimination that has surrounded it for almost 100 years.
    This fixture will be interesting to say the least. Brexit may have tensions inflated slightly but I believe this match will pass quietly.

    I'm a Belfast native and I never felt any affinity for the six county team. While the six county team has always had a small number of Catholic players its fan base has always been100 percent loyalist and Protestant. The national team, however, has a fan base that is completely non sectarian, and it draws players from all over Ireland and the UK. The Irish team has supporters all the world. This is in stark contrast to the six county team who's supporters come mainly from working class loyalist areas in eastern Ulster are basically unknown outside of Europe.

    • @LeMerch
      @LeMerch 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Jack the Film Fanatic You have to go back in time for that to be true though. ROI is not a sectarian team at all. It's far more inclusive than NI will ever be considering it has still links to loyalist and pro sectarian fans. You just don't get that in Ireland at all. Whatsoever. Right now Ireland has a massive worldwide fanbase of all different types of people, while NI fans still want a sectarian team for a sectarian state. Sad reality. No need for a time machine.

    • @bloodboughtbigphilr8266
      @bloodboughtbigphilr8266 ปีที่แล้ว

      100% Loyalist and Protestant fanbase? Away on! Never the case and especially not so now. I know your comment was 4 years ago and you would be correct in saying the fanbase is predominantly Loyalist and Protestant but certainly not exclusively. Strides have been taking to stamp out sectarianism for some time now and the GAWA have cultivated a reputation on their travels for being friendly, well behaved and fun loving. They also got on famously with the Republic fans in France 2016. Also in Northern Ireland, increasing numbers are identifying as 'Other' rather than Unionist or Nationalist and many of them would be NI fans. Even more primarily designate their nationality as Northern Irish rather than British or Irish and this includes a significant chunk of the Catholic population. Out of those Catholic 'Northern Irish', they would be much more inclined to back Norn Irn than the Republic but probably wanting to see both do well like myself. More still can be done to lay aside the sectarianism of the past and coming up with their own anthem rather than clinging to GSTQ or GSTK now would be a momentous step. It was also a mistake renovating Windsor Park as opposed to building a brand new national stadium for multi-sport use and considering who own Windsor Park, their associations and where the ground is located. Anyhow, your assertions are way off the mark and it is not a small number of Catholic players either who have represented NI down through the years. The legendary team who beat hosts Spain in the 82 World Cup was virtually 50-50 and it was a Catholic from West Belfast who scored the winner in that memorable night. Also, their most successful manager of recent years is a Catholic and nor is he the first to manage the team.

    JINX! An exciting affair!!! It was awful and too much booing from the Irish fans! We never did that before, even against the English. We've have lost it now and can never hold the high ground again. I thought we had grown up! And as for the Northern Ireland fans....well done McClean you ignored them. The Irish football was awful and a large part of both sets of fans were awful. A night to forget........and yeah I fully understand why the knuckle draggers among us felt to the need to boo and be pathetic, but the rest of us grown ups looked on feeling let down. We still have a long way to go!

      There are many sports bodies which remained All-Ireland after the country itself was partitioned, in fact soccer is the exception. The GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) and rugby union (IRFU) are probably the two most prominent examples of sports organisations which still govern the sport across the whole island, but it's the same for boxing (Irish Athletic Boxing Association
      ), field hockey (Hockey Ireland), Tennis (Tennis Ireland
      ) etc.
      They were founded pre-partition, and simply never stopped. I suppose because they never had accusations of favouritism/neglect the same way that the IFA had.

    Brilliant.
    Your coverage of NI football really helps explain how deep rooted the division was/is in the society and how the stain of sectarianism dictated every part of life for ordinary people on both sides, in every part of life.
    Hopefully it helps explain just what the peace process was/Is up against.
    Two things,
    1. bear in mind Irish Catholics following soccer were already up aggainst huge pressure from the Catholic Church, irish political system & GAA (indigenous Irish sport asciation) for playing garrision games & then they had to face external sectarianism.
    Really caught in the middle just to pursue the love of the game.
    2. The fact that virtually all NI Catholic players opt to play for the Republic, it aids in the fact that the NI team is not the cross community unifyer it could be, such as the All-Ireland rugby team.

    • @TheLastAngryMan01
      @TheLastAngryMan01 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Eh? Point 1 is completely incorrect. Soccer is traditionally the more popular sport in the city of Derry because the Catholic Church encouraged young men to play it (for fear that playing gaelic games would encourage them towards republicanism). The likes of Derry City and Cliftonville did come under pressure alright (forcing Derry City out of the Irish League in the 1970s) but it was from outside of their community.

    I appreciate the videos you guys have done on Ireland and Northern Ireland. But I feel, considering how many you've done on the subject so far, that you really shouldn't be making the mistakes that you made in this video. Glenavon is pronounced glen ahvon not glenayvon. Omagh is pronounced ohmuh not ohh ma. Ulster is not a synonym for Northern Ireland. There are 3 counties in Ulster that are not a part of Northern Ireland (Cavan, Donegal and Monaghan). Willfully conflating the two terms is pretty offensive.
