A viewer of the show reached out to do a NGD on the New Guild S100 Polara Kim Thayil of Soundgarden signature guitar. This is basically Guild's take on a Gibson SG, but it has a deep-rooted history itself. This was a great experience, I'd like to check out a vintage one someday!

An easier fix for the switch tip than grinding it off would be to drop a little piece of balled up paper or something into the tip before screwing it on. That way it doesn't go down as far but you can still tighten it.

I was living in London England in the early 90s and had a friend who was a roadie for a lot of the Seattle bands, invited me out to dinner with Kim and bassist Ben Shepperd. I remember Ben insisting that no one played bass lower than he did, not even Dee Dee Ramone. I also remember Kim saying that everyone thought he played an SG, but both he and Chris Cornell preferred Guilds because they sounded more like Tony Iommi.
PS thanks for playing the Soundgarden songs, you rock, Trogly!

And you're getting a signature guitar for much less than Epiphone signatures go for, plus it has a nice original vibe to it. Loved the phase switch on the picking parts. $899 is working man prices almost and quality and finish looked pretty amazing - better than some Gibsons sad to say eek. Would definitely consider if I didn't have too many guitars already.

Soundgarden is my favourite band from the early 90’s so I had to get one. I received my Guild S-100 Polara Kim Thayil guitar two days ago. Haven’t put it down much since. I’ve never played a SG-style guitar before so didn’t know what to expect. Have to say I’m super pleased I added this one to the tool box. 🤘

    I have a 1972 Guild S-100 in cherry finish.
    I bought it in 1989 for $125.
It was played to death and has all the natural "relic" you could ask for.
The pickups are fantastic and it is a light and resonating guitar.
It is a recording dream for how many sounds you can get out of it.
    I love my Guild S-100!

Those S100s and Hagstrom had an SG shaped guitar too - we used to beat on them so bad back early 70s as they got no respect. Mind you a Gibson SG Special was $279 in '73 but you could get the Guild for $189 or you could get a $200 SG Melody Maker - the good days when beaters were beaters and men loved them lol 🎸

My lad Owen had an original S100 when he came to the States with Purple Melon in 2009. Nice guitars…very even- sounding. Me, I’ve got a bit of a Jones for the single-pickup S50 though, because that’s what my hero Lee Brilleaux used for slide with Dr Feelgood in their early days.

I had always wanted to try a Guild s-100 since seeing a Guitar World magazine with Soundgarden in it. When Guild released these Kim Thayil models, I was thinking about getting one but ended up with one of the limited edition s-100 that Sweetwater had on sale that came with the ebony fingerboard and coilsplits. So far I am really liking it.

My first time seeing a Guild S-100 was from seeing The Shins live at Bumpershoot, Seattle Washington in 2005(?). They were promoting their ‘Wincing The Night Away’ album during that time. One of the guitarists had a natural finish S-100, but I thought it was an SG with a weird tail piece. Finding out Kim Thayil played one a while back was a neat revelation. I wouldn’t mind giving one of these a try, since I love SG style guitars in general.

I’ve been playing Guild acoustic guitars for over 50 years. The majority of them are high end but they do offer some more affordable ones built in China but designed in the USA that are very good quality. Guild and Gibson were THE guitars of the 50’s

I absolutely love your channel man. And the Polara and S-100 models are some of my favorite guitars ever. I just love a guild in general but the first time I ever saw these as an SG nut myself just blew me away. I personally like them better than SG at this point but still love me a good SG regardless. If you haven’t seen the deluxe and base models yet they’ve got some cool finishes too. Particularly the Canyon Dusk on the Deluxe. It just looks gorgeous. And I like the phantom green and electric yellow on the base models too, and they have the string-thru body instead of that clunky stop bar tailpiece which just looks pretty cool.

The build quality of the Guild's made in America are far above the usual factory guitars such as... F & G the big two... The backstory of Guild is a great one. I own a new China made Starfire. Although I love it, it's not ever going to be like the older ones. Vintage Guild's are STILL amazingly affordable.
Check out the 1977 to 1984 Guild S-65d. I bought mine new in 1978 for $330 including tax and hardcase! Sadly don't have it anymore but I later bought a replacement. I love the design of the string block with two huge screws, the bridge is all adjustable and has roller saddles and the open strip tuners hold on to the tuning. Mahogany set neck. Awesome pickup selection and high quality electronics. These never needed to be modded or upgraded. Also, mine from the 70's/80's were not built like modern guitars... You had to play them in and this made them your own! Guitars didn't come out of the factory all perfectly pre worn in... You had to play the mother to work in that neck and fingerboard and it's a great difference that makes better players. Put on some 11 gauge strings and put some nuts into it. You're not grocery shopping!

    Salutations Austin!
I have never had a Guild in my collection before, but I may very well consider adding one of these to my collection sometime in the future. Fortunately, my local guitar shop is an authorised Guild dealership, so it may be possible for me to have one ordered through the local guitar shop.
It definitely seems to be well built, and the switch tip issue is very easy to resolve.
It’s too bad that it doesn’t come with a signature hard shell case as well, but it wouldn’t be difficult to order a hard shell case to fit.
Thank you for sharing your experience with this model with us all!
Please have an excellent and awesome day!

Guild has always made good guitars. They sort of took second place behind Gibson, but in the ‘70s their quality was better. Their jazz guitars are great. In 1976 I got a blonde Guild X-500, their equivalent to a Gibson L5-CESN. Nice guitar, had killer flame maple sides and back and an ebony fingerboard with pearl and abalone inlays. Unfortunately, I made the mistake of taking it on the road, and Frontier Airlines did a number on it. It was in a hardshell case, and I took all the precautions I could-I loosened the strings, padded the case out with socks and underwear, taped the case shut and put “Fragile” stickers all over it, and a “This Side Up” sticker on the lid. I had to check it of course-it was too big to go in the overhead bin, and they wouldn’t let me put it in the coat closet. At the other end, the case came down the conveyor upside-down, despite the stickers all over it. The baggage gorillas were probably playing catch with it, or trying to see how far they could throw it. The ebony bridge saddle was broken in half, and when I tried to get it repaired, the repair guy found that some bracing had been knocked loose under the top, and the arch would flatten out under string tension. The airline gave me $50 for repairs, and I had to sign off on it before they’d let me take it out of baggage claim. The fifty bucks wouldn’t even begin to cover the cost of proper repairs, which would have cost more than the guitar was worth. It had cost $1500 new, a lot of money in 1976, and I wound up selling it for $300. Taught me not to take a nice hollowbody on the road!

you wouldn't say "gibson made a Rickenbacker" because some of the gibson lap steels have a similar shape, or "gibson made a Martin d28" beacuse the hummingbird is roughly a dreadnought shape

I had the DeArmond S-73, which was their version of the Guild Polara. It had American made gold foil humbucking pups in it. I paid $180 for it in 1999 when GC was blowing them out. Made in Korea, it played and sounded great. Fender cheapened these guitars up and called renamed them Squier instead of DeArmond. I had it for 20 years before trading it and another guitar to my brother for a 2018 SG.

don't grind down the tip!!!!! use a small o ring in between the tip and switch so you can tighten it and still achieve the same effect as unwinding it a turn

I was looking this guitar up on Google, Low and Behold,
Squire by Fender yes Squire. Put out a 20th anniversary edition Polara used they were asking $350. Fenders attempt to get some of that SG action I guess. It just blows my mind. For $899. This Guild appears to have more bang for the Buck, quintessential Soundgarden tone, stock.
Nobody can tell what Tone is, playing soundgarden at the beer garden.

i've got the 73 version of the s100, i played it for years, but its missing a tone knob and a truss cover now. and it stays on its stand gathering dust. but it was a great guitar, I used to use it with 0.8 gauge strings and the action was so low the strings almost touched the frets, with no buzzes.

I have a fretless guild Polara style bass from the 70s (Called the JS) and it's a really cool bass, I have an epiphone sg but if I were to get a more expensive one i'd probably get one of these over a Gibson.

I used to have two guitars that are very rare now. And very valuable. I got them in pawn shops in Fullerton. What was I thinking when I got rid of them?!? One was an Ibanez Musician with gorgeous wood and hardware. Worth about $3000.00 now. The other was a Guild S300D solid body...worth about $2500.00. Very blonde mahogeney. Both in their original cases. Thank goodness I was bright enough to hold onto the Fender Strat made in Fullerton.

I really like this Guild; I would replace the heavy tailpiece with an aluminum one because one reason that 50s Gibson's are highly sought after is because of the lightweight hardware used which promotes tone and sustain. Heavy hardware isnt condusive for tone and sustain. Great video

Similar to my Fender Toronado type of thing I think : at first they were all over the guitar stores in 2000-2001 for $350 or $250 sometimes and now very few are around for whatever reason and only the dude from Train is the only other one I’ve seen and so I wanna stock up on eBay ones before but I don’t know how practical it would be at this point… until there was that guitar library or something like a big tour.

Hey Trogly! Been watching you for a few years, and have been wondering if you'd ever do a review/demo/breakdown of a Brian May Red Special Replica? Especially seeing that you do Guild reviews, I know that years back, Brian May had collaborated with Guild to produce a red special copy. So, just curious, and keep doing what you do!🎸🤘🎶

Them pickups remind me of the Seymour Duncans with the name embossed on the top. Don't recall for sure which dealer . Msy have been Sweet Water but I recently saw an SG on a site that had a Les Paul style pickguard on it and it was white. Something else seemed strange I don't recall seeing screws . It might have been the style that clipped to the pickup rings. Don't know what year it was but definitely used I'm sure since I don recall when Gibson had that style of pickguard on an SG.

Guild makes some nice guitars, I’m a big fan of their acoustics. The only SG inspired shape I like that’s not a Gibson is an ESP Viper though. Most just look weird.

Those pickups sound SO good! I reckon that this one is the best buy if you’re going for an affordable SG a style guitar, less expensive and way better sounding than any entry level Gibson.
