  • Powerful. Moving. Visionary.
There were speeches in the history of the European Union that have made Europe the way it is today.
A renowned historian specialising in tyranny and totalitarianism, Timothy Snyder writes and teaches with the hope that we might learn from history.
In 2019, the ERSTE Foundation, which cites the preservation of a democratic Europe as one of its strategic goal, invited the Yale professor to deliver a speech to Europe.
Timothy Snyder delivered his speech - a powerful address to Europeans - in this symbolic place, on a symbolic date: Europe Day, celebrated every year on 9 May.
Take a look at the dedicated TH-cam playlist, where we will be uploading the full speeches that have made Europe: • Speeches that have mad...

History instead of myth. EU instead of empire. Science instead of denial. Free journalism instead of centrally steered media.
Snyder, as an American, is one of the most important ambassadors of modern Europe. Thank you for that 🙏

What a speech!!! what ideas cosmic- humane- human - I somehow think of science fiction - how we have lost our stories- as Masha Gessen says- the future has become the past-Thanks Dr. Snyder

What a great man! A true mensch. The more I read from him, the more I hear him, the more I see him do for us, the more I admire this great scholar.
    We must heed his words.

Vielen Dank! Wir brauchen solche Ansprachen um uns immer wieder bewußt zu machen, wo wir stehen! Was richtig ist und was falsch. Und welche Bedeutung das europäische Projekt tatsächlich hat.

What a unique take on the EU.
In the danish school books we indeed learn the myth of nation states. Thank you Prof. Snyder.

An amazing speech that is giving hope but also a huge responsibility. I agree with Timothy Snyder that we Europeans need to write our common and true European history and teach that in schools in order to understand our past in order to be stronger on the future with a common balanced narrative moving into the challenges and opportunities of the future!

Very important speech from Timothy Snyder. The lesson learned after the great war. We should never forget, so all humans should never forget. Sadly i can only see East Africa slowly forming a similar project for it's people.

20:25 - The speech was very good. Until Snyder started to shame people who have any doubts about the global warming story.
He also got the ecological panic parallel wrong. Snyder rightly noticed the catastrophic (and wrong!) ecological panic of Hitler - overpopulation and Lebensraum. This panic led to Holocaust. Snyder then drew a parallel to a modern ecological panic, of global warming. But this time this ecological panic is supposed to be correct. However, last time we had the ecological panic idea (of Hitler), it was a complete and utter disaster, with millions dead.
I'm not saying global warming idea is similarly wrong. I'm saying it's supposed to be wrong if you follow Snyder parallel to the end.

Hitler's "ecological panic" was borne of (debunked) malthusianism and a time before the Green Revolution - but the other face of the coin is that after being removed from overseas empire by the defeat in WWI, the only kind of empire Germany could pursue was a local land empire, and all the rest is motivated reasoning. The dead were also killed by the machinations of empire, not the ecological disaster. That's not what's happening right now, the dead in Bangladesh, Pakistan, Pacific atolls and micronations are not because of empire.

    • @achenarmyst2156

Hitler‘s ecological panic was produced by a racist ideology.
Today‘s ecological panic is produced by international science and reason.
Hitler‘s ecological panic wanted to eradicate the supposedly weak.
Today‘s ecological panic tries to protect the weak.
So the way you argue is exactly what Snyder is warning us about. You are the digital voice of myth and empire that we must shield us against.
Long live the European Union 🇪🇺.

Your argument is very weak. If you pointed to some strong sources or you decided to opine giving better examples, it may be believable.

What does he say that you don't agree with? I'm unclear where he stands on climate change. IMO the earth has gone through many periods of prolonged climate change in the past. None of this was brought on by man. I am now willing to agree with Bjorn Lomberg that man has ADDED to climate change since we started to use fossil fuels. But even the IPCC don't say it's the end of human life on earth. We just need to grow up and start making some sensible long term changes. e.g. painting the roofs of buildings black, providing poor countries and people with fans, plant crops that are more heat resistent, plant them further north, and maximize food production all over the world. I could go on and on.
