Limone sul Garda (Limù in the Garda dialect [4]) is an Italian town of 1 124 inhabitants [1] in the province of Brescia in Lombardy.
Today Limone is one of the busiest tourist resorts on the Brescia coast, famous for its lemon houses, its fine olive oil, and for the longevity of some of its inhabitants.
The municipality, the northernmost on the Lombard shore of Lake Garda and the easternmost in the province of Brescia, is located on the border between three regions.
In fact, it is contiguous to the north with Riva del Garda and Ledro (province of Trento), in Trentino-Alto Adige, while the lake surface belonging to the municipal area borders to the east with Malcesine (province of Verona), in Veneto.
Within the province of Brescia it borders to the south and west with Tremosine sul Garda.
It is 65 km from Brescia, 50 km from Trento and 90 km from Veron
The name of Limone reminds all the tourists of the picturesque locality of the lemon fruits: the city guide states that this is, together with the nearby lake of Toblino [5], among the northernmost places where these fruits grow. Since 1863 the denomination has been Limone San Giovanni;[6] the current one, Limone sul Garda, was assumed in 1905.
However, although lemons actually grow there, that is not the origin of the name. Olivieri thinks of the Celtic silt or lemos elm (cf. Limonum in Gaul, today's Poitiers in France). Less probable is the Latin etymology līma, referring to a river that would have eroded the land due to the current (as Pieri claimed, in analogy with the Tuscan watercourse); this origin is without justification for chronological reasons, as the toponym Lemonum is already attested in 1192. Local tradition instead has it derived from līmen, border, with reference to the border between the Brescia area and the jurisdiction of the bishop of Trento (today between that of the provinces of Brescia and Trento).[7]
The past production of lemons, which took place during the Duchy of Milan to self-produce these fruits and not import them from "abroad" is evidenced by the artificial terraces with pillars suitable for spreading protective sheets for any winter frosts and the fact that often limonaia, braziers were lit to heat the air. Today it is no longer profitable for massive income-producing production.
To safeguard this historical and architectural heritage of Garda, the Municipality of Limone has restored and restored the "del Castel" and "Villa Borghi" lemon houses which are currently open and can be visited.[8]
Until the 1940s, the town was confined to isolation and can only be reached by lake or through the mountains from the south, but the construction of the Gardesana state road 45bis (completed in 1932) broke this isolation and brought about a notable tourist development in the area. also opening it towards Riva del Garda and foreign tourism. Today it is the main infrastructure that connects Limone with Brescia to the south and Trento to the north.
