It’s not you, it’s my hormones Testosterone Influences | Lisa Welling | TEDxOaklandUniversity

  • My research finds that increases in testosterone is associated with increased preferences for sexually dimorphic (i.e., masculinity in males and femininity in females) characteristics and changes in self-perception. Specifically, research shows that testosterone influences perceptions by increasing preferences for masculine men and feminine women, and influencing men's perceptions of their own dominance. This research demonstrates that, far from being arbitrary, our preferences and perceptions are at least in part governed by biological processes and that beauty is not just in the eye of the beholder.
    Dr. Lisa Welling is an Assistant Professor at Oakland University. Her Ph.D., entitled Individual Differences in Face Preferences, was completed in 2008 and was funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. Grounded in evolutionary reasoning, Dr. Welling’s research generally surrounds three related areas: hormonal influences on behavior, sources of adaptive mate preferences, and interpersonal relationships. In addition to having co-edited a book entitled Evolutionary Perspectives on Social Psychology, Dr. Welling has published five book chapters and more than fifty scientific journal articles. Her research has been featured in the media multiple times on programs including lthe Oprah Winfrey Show and the Discovery Channel documentary Curiosity.

    For everyone saying "but I am X and am not like that", studies like these are studies of generalities. Most people will have their behavior reasonably explained by what she said, the rest are normal statistical deviations expected in complex things like humans.

      Lawrence Worrell i agree... i once date an ugly unattractive guy because i was frustrated with my previos boyfriend that was attractive.. and i thought the main problem was he was attractive.. and i thought i need to be like a type of person that can see a person beyond just looks.. because my previos attractive boyfriend (that for me i thought was out of my league) has issues that i thought only attractive people have.. so.. this ugly unattractive guy, he 1st and foremost are sick,, he has kidney disease and his sickness are see through his physical which he looks skinny malnourished and physically smaller than me as an average guy.. and i have a normal average body of a female.. not just that.. he looks like he didnt even care to try to groom himself to make himself presented better.. his clothing always 2 times bigger than his size.. and when talks about clothing sizing he seems like to detest people that wear tight fitting clothes.. he says it looks uncomfortable and didnt like it.. but the problem is.. his clothing are just way bigger than his size.. like he didnt care! and he also has some kind of hatred towards people that take care of their appearance.. he thought he was being a better person by not focusing on appearance but the problem is.. his appearance are just making me want to puke.. he sorta trying to push his idealogies into me aswell probably because he realise that im out of his league and trying to make me think that appearance is not important and just accept him as it is.. i do believe that theres no such thing as ugly people.. just people that didnt take care of their appearance.. i almost falls into his bullshit ideologies.. he keeps saying to me.. "just accept me just aaccept me" asking me to accept him as he is no matter how unattracted i am in his apppearance and have told him many2 times.. the only things that his selling are his attitude.. and he thinks his attitude sells more to compensate his unattractiveness.. the more i spend time with him.. the more i discovered disgustissness in him.. like the way he walks are unattractive.. the way he drive are unattractive.. the way he eats are messy.. just gross me out.. in the end i really have to end it.. and the lesson i learned from that.. i do need to be with a person that i find attractive no matter what.. issues can come in both traits.. either attractive or unattractive.. and theres nothing wrong in that and nothing wrong to have a preferences.. and i am 100persent more than willing to be and deal with attractive ppl with issues than with an unattractive one..

    As a testicular cancer survivor, who uses testosterone supplementation, my testosterone level varies from under 200 to over 1500 in a few cases. It had no effect on what I was attracted to. It did affect my morning wood... but also the quality of my sleep, the clarity or foginess of my thinking, whether or not I felt constant dread all the time, whether or not I had night sweats.
    So at the least.. I'm a counter example.

      "had no effect on what I was attracted to" That's subjective and this study specifically shows that it does have an effect, subconsciously or not. They were showing small differences in people's appearance and the preference people had when subjected to different T levels and it shows their biases depending on hormone level. You probably just didn't notice and or were not specifically looking/dating and being subjected to different faces, picking out which ones you preferred.

      based on what she said:
      1.it means that your testosterone levels are not very high just normal.
      2.another reason maybe that you subconsciously tuned your preference to desire those that are not out of your league. For example, if you're an average guy you know that a hot super model is out of your league so your desire learns to lean towards woman that you can get.

    It's both frightening and fascination the extent these hormones dictate so many aspects of our personality, even the effects are more dramatic only if you're on any far end of the spectrum. It's already been mentioned by others but I would be interested to know how this applies to homosexual and bisexual. Would higher testo levels make men attracted to other men with more typical masculine characteristics?
    Or is it the complete opposite? After all, and I realize that this is just a stereotype so I have no idea if this is true at all, but the gay community seems to consist of tops and bottoms, and it would make more sense if the "tops" so to speak had higher levels of testosterone, but that would also suggest they wouldn't necessarily be attracted to more feminine bottoms?

    • @silviafox78
      @silviafox78 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      mas·cu·line
      1. Having qualities or appearance traditionally associated with men, especially strength and aggressiveness.
      I'm pretty sure aggressive people in general have less interest in children. Since that is a defined masculine trait it makes sense.

    • @cg675
      @cg675 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@silviafox78 The two troubling key words I notice in that definition are "traditionally associated." it adds a bit of wiggle room, an "eye of the beholder" effect to the definition when I feel a published dictionary should word it more concretely. For instance, it sounds like, through your eyes, you see the topic of aggression only at its extreme, as in someone who can just put their fist through a wall when upset. Yeah, someone like that wouldn't want to be around kids and probably shouldn't be. The thing is aggression is not a mood or emotion, it's a measuring scale for the degree of intensity behind an action. Like negotiating aggressively. That doesn't mean you hate the person across from you at the business table and want to get violent. Let's take aggressiveness in playtime with your children. A Father might take their kid by one arm and leg, helicopter spin them, and throw them into a pool. It's a truly aggressive act, but not a damaging one. Odds are you'll just end up with a dad and a kid next to each other laughing their heads off afterwards.
      When it comes to attentiveness and nurturing, women and men are about the same when it comes to children. It just comes in different flavors between the two. Women tend to focus on protection and preservation, men tend to focus imparting and strengthening. All of it important. Another case of aggressiveness, one sibling shoves another and that one starts to cry. A father would step in at that time and lay it out, that was too much power used, so the kid learns to dial back at play and apologize. Pushing for the apology imparts humility and empathy, keeping in mind how you effect others and especially how that can mean a penalty on you.
      So, as a man, I get where Jess Rob is coming from. I hear that line in the presentation and it strikes that chord inside of "Ummm No. That's not a masculine man." That's the stereotype of a hyper macho manly man. I'm pretty sure that's what she's nodding to since she immediately follows that up describing guys who go out and sleep with as many girls as possible. Yeah, those types don't care about children. Pick up artist aren't going to commit to anyone. Last, you notice the word that came to mind there, "stereotype". And that loops us right back to "Traditionally associated". Putting so much weight on what a lot of people happen to think versus what something actually is.

    • @silviafox78

      adjective
      1. ready or likely to attack or confront; characterized by or resulting from aggression.
      2. pursuing one's aims and interests forcefully, sometimes unduly so.
      I would not call spinning a kid around and throwing them into a pool as aggressive behavior if the goal is to play. However take that same situation but use an actually aggressive man who throws their kid into a pool as a personal attack or maybe enforced punishment and you'll have aggressive behavior.

      Please don't do that. It would cause every living person to die if the world came to an abrupt halt. People wouldn't even die from the impact of flying into things, they'd probably die from the g-force first. I think if someone made an example simulation of what it would look like it would be very interesting: I think seeing what would happen to the bodies of water would be the strangest. It could be possible that the water would be travelling fast enough (compared to the still Earth) that it would fly into space, creating a stranger whirlpool of water floating away from the Earth. I think it would also be just as interesting to see what would happen if the world slowed down over time, meaning that we would see the effects of the Earth being still on the environmental side (rather than everything being sweeped of the surface of Earth and into space) of things with people there to interact with the new environment. Honestly that's a great novel idea, there is a lot of research that would need to be done to write it. What would happen to the weather? Could it rain? Would there be tides? And if there were would it only be in the part of the Earth that is dark? Would the ozone layer still stay and have a breathable atmosphere? Would everyone die anyway? Or would it still be habitable? OR, would the Earth stop spinning AND stop moving (around the sun) OR just stop spinning OR just stop moving? Cause if it stopped moving that would mean it wouldn't be in orbit and would be gravitated into the sun and we'd definitely all die. BUT, if it just stopped spinning would it still be habitable? Or would everything die due to the new weathers and season cycles and eventually (over many thousands of years) adapt and life would start spreading again? Would the seasons be the same but there was no night and day? In fact, wouldn't certain parts never be bright or always be bright (the north and south poles) cause the Earth is on an axis and the north pole isn't lined up with the north of the sun and the south pole isn't' lined up with the south of the sun? Would there be months when it's always sunny and months when it's always dark in many places? Also due to the changed weather patterns would there be extreme weather or no weather?
      I have more questions but no one is going to read all that junk above this but a couple people might read this little bit at the end. So for the couple people who read this bit: it's 02:56AM were (or is it where) I am and I'm not bored... Surprisingly... Actually I am wanting to watch something but for some reason I keep typing this. I should stop. Okay. It's done. I'm done. Sorry. For anyone who read this cause this is a waste of time.

    So the date / person clicking is often a case of coinciding testosterone peaks when you are emotionally open to pursuing a relationship ?!?! This means you need an app on your smartphone that somehow measures your key hormones and tells you what your present hormonal profile is and that you should adjust your dating / mating decisions accordingly in order to minimise interference in decision making from hormones ... I guess...?
    On some reflection the bit about preferring attractive people seems anecdotally true - often you feel just that very slight bit better in the presence of an attractive person and that predisposes you to behave well with them or treat them preferentially. It's almost the same effect as if attractive people invisibly shooting "you love me" hypnosis rays into their surroundings all the time...

    The better Example would have been Cherlize Theron, The movie Monster. Should of ultra feminize the character from the film as well as the more masculine and vs. her regular self.

    Really poorly reasoned. People with these traits report better immunity, therefore that reported immunity is caused by genetics? It could simply be that their life is easier because they are more attractive and as a result experience fewer stress related illnesses. There is zero evidence given that the cause of reported increased immunity.

    • @AlbertBalbastreMorte
      @AlbertBalbastreMorte 7 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      Do you say there's zero evidence because you read into this and related studies and concluded there was none or because you didn't nother doing so?

    • @michaelbirdsall3228
      @michaelbirdsall3228 7 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      Albert Balbastre-Morte It is the burden of the person making the argument to produce the evidence. I could research this and provide counter evidence but it is equally effectual to just point out that this is poorly reasoned. Because I didn't provide counter evidence doesn't make this any better. It is still nonsense.

    She cuts the graphs from below. Instead of starting from 0, they start from a higher number to make the differences look bigger, when they're actually small.

    Wait a second, wouldn't the claim that being more hyperfeminine or hypermasculine within your gender leads to better health outcomes be a bit confounded due to the fact that those individuals receive preferential treatment in almost every culture?

    • @warptens5652
      @warptens5652 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      if masculine men get preferential treatment and are therefore more healthy, then masculine men are more healthy.
      It doesn't have to be a direct causal link in order to be selected by evolution.

      Lydia Washington just take this with a grain of salt. It's interesting to look at and study as a part of a whole of other wider more inclusive studies, but by itself is very over generalized.

      You can say you successfully acted like non-feminine/masculine way often and hard enough for having high hormones imbalances that affect your ovaries and menstrual cycle.

      If you have pcos why not remove the faulty organs like the ovaries and start on bioidentical hormone therapy so you can live life without this horrible thing ? Instead of treating the symptoms treat the actual problem...i feel doctors dont do that tho if you dont push them by educating them to make money off of peoples problems which is sad but is the truth
