I picked one of these up about a year ago. It can add a wonderful rhythmic-harmonic layer to dreamy ambient drones and the panning options add so much variety and motion. Not sure how useful it would be for more conventional guitar music - but then I'm not very interested in making that, and that's probably also true of anyone else who would buy the pedal I've been meaning to pick up a midi clock so I can sync the slicer patterns with delays I use - I think this would make it a lot more useful. I'm kind of annoyed both the slicer and fancy (Empress) delay I have will receive but not send midi clock, but I probably need to get over it.
I have this pedal. It's fun for an afternoon of preset surfing. These days hundreds of plugins that can do everything this can do and more. SoundToys Tremolator is a good starting point, but there are many more powerful EDM rhythmic chop plugins. Check out Sugar Bytes, Cable Guys and Output among many others including some great free ones!
This thing sounds similar to what I could get my M-Audio Black Box to do. It had a variation of the Roger Linn Adrinalinn built in. It was cool to play around with, but I had a hard time incorporating it into any music I was playing live. Great video Leon. Have a great week. God bless and rock on 👍😎🎸
i had one of these. sold it when i got the axe fx, as i could replicate pretty much everything it does in there. nice pedal, especially if midi synced to clock with some synced delays behind it
The Adrenalinn is such a cool pedal, which I'm sure this borrowed heavily from. Really useful if you're doing EDM-style stuff and you don't have a synth sequencer handy. I've even used it for faux-ducking compression by using a slow attack/long duty pattern. Fun fact: They included this pedal model in the GT-1000 and a bunch of other stuff.
The rhythmic slicing can be a lot of fun, particularly when looping. I'm not a fan of any kind of fast panning, but slow panning can sound epic. Thanks
Dystopian future is the picture I get hearing this. Or 80s horror (i.e. NOES). I'd like to hear a bass played thru it. I can see how this could boost creativity. Slap a looper on it & go. Looks really fun!
had one for a while on the board in an experimental math/rock sort of band, has very cool but limited use case scenarios i found, quite unique and more straight forward than the crazier step/tremolo types of effects out there used the momentary function the most i think
@@LeonTodd i never tried it in stereo though , that sounded pretty rad , i can't see myself buying a slicer again and two amps to try it though 😄 it's very cool when you put it after big washy reverb/shimmer/octave stuff otherwise, goes into trance sort of stabs territory now i'm getting nostalgic
Awesome vid! Total stereophonic ear candy! As primarily a keys player and someone chasing this sort of sound, I’ve gotten a lot (too much?), including plugins-like Output Movement and Reason Alligator-and pedals, like: Boss MD-500, EHX Mod Rex, Hologram Microcosm, Eventide H9 (Harpeggiator), Empress ZOIA, and Source Audio Ultrawave. Helps to inject rhythm when I’m holding notes for too long or for when sounds have amassed to the verge of noise and therefore need sliced and diced for maintaining dynamics/interest, or for when I am not playing (or capable of playing) very fast. 🤷♂️ 😉
This thing.. recording (!) it midi-sync´ed with keyboards, guitars, cymbals, vocals: Been there, done that - and I still do, occasionally. Big keeper for me! 👍 Live with a "no-clicktrack" band I found it too difficult/risky/distracting, though - despite its tap tempo and patternstart-retriggering options. Thank you for a great episode, again! 😊
Great vid. Good to see a niche pedal get a go in the spotlight. It's a classic. I used it with a Boss synth pedal. Even used it with an Adrenalinn. And you're right...the pedal plays you. You don't play it. Much better though when you have a drum track going with it via midi sync. Boss need to develop a new one asap. And put some sliders on it so the user can program their own patterns. Actually the FM9 will do this stuff? It's got a sequencer right?
I’ve been obsessing over this pedal lately , so it’s funny you just demoed this. I took it out my pedal bin a week ago to mess with. It’s been years. I want to love it. But I can’t for the life of me get it to match the drum tempo on my Boss RC10r. I’ve always thought I was pretty good at tempo, but this thing doesn’t want to play nice with the looper pedal drums. Even using the tap tempo and timing the retrigger button on the slicer. I just can’t get it to match. I almost wonder if the tap is slightly off. It always falls behind the beat. It works great with my tap tempo delay and sy200, though. Resigned myself to ordering a midi tap tempo for it from disaster area, even though I didn’t want to spend the extra cash or take up more board space.
Very cool. Reminds me of the movie slingblade with Billy Bob Thornton as Karl. At the end they play some cool Jimi Hendrix type music with a fuzz and a thus trem effect and it sounded cool . ♥️🤘♥️ Great demo. Those double pedals are cool. The stereo chorus is the one I'd want too.. Drinking my first cup of coffee then off to doctor this AM for monthly checkup and then to a friend's to clean out a barn.. Supposed to be 78 degrees or about 25.55 Celsius 🤘♥️
I could get some similar stuff out of the LFO on my Lexicon MPX-G2, and I would spend hours playing to it-- and it had maybe a tenth of the capability of this. I'd never come up for air. Fun thing: use Random and tell your drummer "Got a cool riff. Play along." Drove my drummer nuts.
...for sure, left and right channels out of the effector -- so the recording would need two tracks going into the interface, DAW etc. Good luck with your music
If only there was a Slicer in a more pedalboard-friendly format... (spoiler, go check Leon's SL-2 video!)
I know some people who may have taken care of that!
Any potential plans for a 200 series?
Now there is!
With this, a Space Echo, and a Boss Synthesizer pedal, the possibilities for creativity are endless.
It's in the fx loop of my Superego+ freezer. They are the best together.
I can hear an entire record jamming with the slicer. Just killer and other worldly!

Midi sync really helps in that case, otherwise it's a nightmare to incorporate with other instruments

They crammed a lot of fun stuff in there. It went over my head when it came out but I have much more of an appreciation for this kind of thing now
This is the answer to Roger Linn's AdrenaLinn but without the cheesy drum machine and complicated menu diving. Love it!!
I would definitely use some of these sounds for an "intro riff." Bring the riff back in the bridge for a moment, then cut to a solo.
I was looking up Slicer videos to convince myself they are lame, but now I want one.

Stoked to run this with a delay for all sorts of mayhem

That loop and solo at 8:00 was sublime
🙌
I remember when this came out, I was seriously thinking about getting it. It definitely has some possibilities.

That makes sense. It's basically a chaos machine!

Loving it with my hydrasynth! midi sync really makes all the difference as you said

I love Boss 20 pedal series!
This thing is awesome. I'm going to try to find one!
I love it. The War On Drugs live performance vibe :-) Def for guitar but I agree it'd be very cool with a synth.
I can see myself noodling for hours with this. Sparks creativity for sure. Gonna dive into the Helix later after werk and find its equivalent.
It's an addictive one for sure!
Go stereo and mess with the pattern trem, maybe combine it with the autopan trem
@@lilybeejones exactly
Listen to Wicked World by Cold. Coolest use of this pedal I believe.

I remember that movie! Have a great day my friend
@@LeonTodd You too sir. ♥️🤘♥️
It's a TR-2 on steroids living on Mars, and I love that
The stereo bit at 04:40 is head mashing needed to be less extreme left and right
In a mix the big spread stereo would be welcome
Luckily, there’s like 5 choices of stereo output on the slicer.

Hahahaha "keep up mate!"
Just a thought.
The sounds of this boss seem to be on top of your dry signal not mixed inside it.
Am I hearing that right.
Still super cool
That's an impressive little noise maker:)
Indeed it is!
This one has some neat sounds in it....
It's definitely a crazy one from boss!? But yet sounds like hours of fun
It is!
When did you leave Dexys Midnight Runners? 😉 I've subscribed, despite you reminding me of him. 😜 Great content every time I watch. 👍
😂
with midi sync shines
This is so Blade Runner sounds.
Very cool indeed.
I love the idea of these pedals.
Sounds cool 🤘🏽🤘🏽
What year did this come out?
Sounds like Nine Inch Nails in a box. So, pretty cool IMO
Estas Tonne use it 😎
That's badass 😍
Very cool show 🎸🤘
Glad you enjoyed it mate!
So which one is better? The sl-20 or the sl-2 compact? Thank you
Sl20 has more stereo options, 2 is more compact
Hey man! I'll keep asking forever, how do you record in stereo? :) Just by using two inputs on your interface? Any tricks?
@Ned Steinberger I know that lol, I have loads of rack effects, I'm asking how he is capturing the stereo signal.
...for sure, left and right channels out of the effector -- so the recording would need two tracks going into the interface, DAW etc.
Good luck with your music
This model, sl20 is it an analog machine with digital looper or total digital pedal?
Pretty sure it's all digital
Thanks.
Ooh, I want noisy-slicer, I don’t know if I need noisy-slicer, but ooh I’d die to find ow-ow-ow-ow-out …
can the SL-20 do anything the SL2 can't?
It's easier to access the output modes.
I have the CE20, RE20, and RT20....
Always wanted a CE20
Check your forum mail....
Probably could work for Boulevard of Broken Dreams
Cool but not worth the space
Savage Garden… now that’s a name I haven’t heard in a long time…👨🦳
Add an ebow some of those would sing
