Thank you all so much for watching and Grow BIG!
This is a great video, I really enjoyed it! My Dad died 16 years ago and when going through his things we came upon an unopened package of Sunflower seeds which I held onto. I remembered your video about the tomato seeds and last year I decided to open up the package and I planted some of the seeds. I was overjoyed when they sprouted and grew into beautiful sunflowers. My Dad was a Michigan gardener all of his life and it felt great to see and enjoy these sunflowers after missing my Dad for so many years!!!
So sweet
Thank you for sharing.
This is a touching story. Thank you for sharing.
🌻💗
you should save the seeds and keep replanting each year or at least put in a mason jar to keep for every few years to keep the memory..
I want to follow the saga of the Valiant tomato. Please keep us posted. 😊
Smiled the whole time I watched this, fun to see how excited you get about germinating old seeds! Whoever sent those to you obviously has a kind heart. Luke please try to start the onion seeds as well !! You never know until you try, and miracles do happen!
I LOVE when you get nerdy and teach us stuff.
Special thanks to the sender for giving us an amazing story to follow! Who better than you Luke, to be the recipient.
Please try the onion seed too! I had guessed you might have three or four tomato seeds sprout, but when you showed the sprouted seeds, it just blew me away! I have to believe you could get at least a few of the onion seeds to sprout. A wise man once said, “Never give up on old seeds!” 😉
I thought I was guessing on the high side when I said three seeds would sprout. I was very shocked when there was 13 plus. I agree, now I want to see the onion seeds and how many of those will sprout!
Onion seeds lose vitality very quickly
This man was born to teach, so natural and enthused 👏 👏 👏
Loved the Giant Crimson saga and can't wait for the Valiant episodes.
These were from my boyhood farm in Petersburg Tennessee, my future son-in-law sent these to you, I’m so excited to see this! I tried myself to sprout some from a different can but it was just dust, please keep me informed of the process! It makes my heart warm to know, that something my father saved all those years ago, can survive! Thank you!
Oh my! 2 of the BEST seeds from back in the day! I would love to buy some if they can be brought back! Don't give up on those onions. Today's tomatoes and onions cannot compare in taste.
Oh trust me he will he has done so before very fun
Wow my dad’s seeds are still alive! Thanks Lee for sending these to your friend! Looking forward to the future!
I also have a can of carrot seeds from the same year and company, I’m so stoked to see you bringing these back to life!
Becky from Acre Homestead gave a shout out for your channel so I've come to check it out. I'm glad I did, now subscribed. Anne, Australia 🦘
I'm going to love seeing you sprout 46 year old tomato seeds. I believe you will definitely have great success with them. Hopefully, you will get the onions to sprout.
This is such an education! Thank you. I've learned so much from your TH-cam channel. And sometimes the delightfully unexpected 😊
Everyone should keep this in mind:
You don't know what you don't know!
I can totally appreciate your excitement at this opportunity to try to germinate older seeds. (Gotta love the English language, where we say "older" for something no longer young but not as old as *old,* where the comparative denotes less of an attribute than its absolute or most basic.) Wanting to find out how much germination I would get from seeds older than an estimated "need to replace with fresh and new" date is how I wind up with multiple storage boxes of seeds meant for finding out precisely that.
Decades ago (literally decades), I read somewhere about millet seeds discovered in a tomb; the seeds were sealed up in a pot and apparently were included as food for the deceased person's journey into the afterlife. The tomb and its contents were estimated to be about five-thousand years old, at the time.
Well, you just know that scientists, being scientists, had to find out whether any of those seeds could and would germinate.
Germination was something like "only" two percent of the seeds tested, but to my mind that they germinated *at all* at five-thousand years old was mind-blowing, miraculous.
So, I expect you're going to get germination. That's the first thing.
Next is, I can't imagine that germination would be as low as only two percent from seeds which are "only" forty-six years old. Actual percentage? Well...I'm guessing between five and ten percent germination and I do realize that I'm allowing myself a lot of latitude.
Thank you for having explained about the importance of touching seeds as little as possible to avoid transferring bacteria, mold spores, fungus spores and whatever else into the testing environment. I've *seen* mold develop when germination tests get conducted and couldn't understand the how and why of it all.
And thanks for everything that you and all your staff at MIgardener do: most grateful!
Much gardening love from Northeast Ohio! 😊💚💚💚💚💚😊
I could be wrong, but I believe this is how spelt and kamut were rediscovered. That's why they're referred to as "ancient grains."
@@ExplodingPsyche Ooh! They were entombed, too? Or at least buried in graves? Very cool! I had not known this; thanks for sharing the info! Much gardening love to you from Northeast Ohio! 😊💚💚💚😊
@@bhalliwell2191 Not sure if they were entombed, but they were discovered in old sites and were not known at the time. At least that's the way I'd heard it a long time ago!
Yes you are nerdy! AND that’s the reason why love you!
Thank you for sharing this wonderful experience!! I can’t wait to see the final product.
💕😁
The old seed content is seriously my favorite content of yours, and I am saying that as someone who loves all of your content!
Love this kind of content! Can’t wait to see how the old and new seeds compare next year.
As the mother of a child born way back in '75, I can tell you 1978 was only 46 years ago! Not "50 so" years ago! 😊 Hey, I don't need to feel any older than I already am!! But I did enjoy the video, and I do get the point; neat experiment. Thank you Sonny, you young whippersnapper you! *...Now, has anyone seen my glasses? I gotta get my glasses on so maybe I can find that jar with my teeth; I'm ready for some lunch!*
As someone who was born in 78 and I will be turning 46 next month, thank you for not aging me. 😂😂
I love your enthusiasm with sprouting old seeds! I do the same. It’s like a treasure hunt. The gardener’s version of panning for gold.
Fun, Fun, Fun!!! 🎉
I love how you key us all up watching you germinate these old seeds. My toes curled while watching this. Can’t wait to see the end results. Good luck on the new experiment 🧪 🌱 🍅.
❌⭕️🙏🏽♥️
What excitement! I had faith they would sprout. I've had very old seeds, although not that old, germinate and produce vegetables for our summer meals. Thank you for this delightful video!
I have 50 year old Marigolds that belonged to my Mom. It is a project in the works that I am excited to start.
This was a fun video. Please keep us informed with the progress of the seeds! Thanks for sharing this!
I love these experiments! They are worth the time! Please do more of them! As for those old seeds I don't see why they wouldn't sprout since they were sealed. You should try growing them under the grow lights and see how far they get to fruiting!
Super cool, can't wait for them to come for sale. the Crimson i got this year ended up being something else, but just as happy.
Can't wait to try and germinate some of my old hot pepper seeds from the same timeframe. The supplier passed away after I made some purchases and we forever lost some really unique pepper varieties. Glad I hung onto some. Will try to germinate next spring
I grew 2 Giant Crimson tomato plants this year with LOT of tomatoes from those 2 plants!!!!
I always enjoy your podcasts and this one is especially interesting!!!!!!!
Oh cool 😎. More old seeds!! So exciting. Love the cans the seeds come in. Good luck!
Love videos like this! Hoping at least half sprout.
I have successfully sprouted old seeds but I don't think they were that old. Congratulations!!
Omg this was crazy. I was expecting like one or two only. I have some seed packs from 2 years ago that my aunt gave me and I assumed they were probably expired and wouldn’t work but now I’m definitely trying them!!
that is fascinating. Please keep us posted!
I was 11 when these seed were packaged. Can’t wait to try some in my garden. This is exciting.
I would love to see if the onion seeds will sprout for this next growing season
Those little hydro units with the peat pods are amazing at starting tomato seeds
I'm so excited for you Luke. I love the Giant Crimson Tomato story. I'll be looking for a follow up video.
Why didn't you do the onions too? wouldn't cost you anything and it would be interesting. 🙏
I can't wait for next year, it will be so exciting to see the comparison. I love your channel and all the useful and reliable information you provide. May God bless you and your family.
What an incredible opportunity!!
You were the giant crimson guy. I have thought about that video for many years now. Wish I still had some seeds from my Great Uncle.
I can not wait to see how this turns out next year, I am semi-local and would love to be part of this!
The best cucumbers I ever grew came from a packet of seeds that was over 8 years old. I threw the rest of the pack, about 8 seeds and 6 of them sprouted and did phenomenal!! I had too many cukes that year because I didn't think much would sprout and planting 4 other plants. Now I know better. I will never throw out my seeds!
I hope you try to plant them! I would love to see them. Maybe at least under grow lights? This is such an exciting experiment! Thanks for taking us along. Can't wait for the updates!
This was so much fun! 🥰
Not going to try the onion seeds?
Love experiments! Can't wait to see the comparison
Luke,
A good year, '78--I remember it well. 😊
Love this video! I can't wait to see the tomato seeds grow! Agonizing to wait a whole year to find out!
Luke, thanks for your wonderful video sharing the excitement in receiving old seeds from a gardener. The fact that they sprouted was so much more exciting! After watching your video, I found a box of old seeds from my dad whom I inherited years before he passed on in 1990. They were 34 years ago. I don't want to throw them away yet. Your enthusiasm got me excited in sprouting the seeds. Will keep you posted if they do sprout. 🙄🙃
I agree. Try to sprout some onion seeds, too. And keep us updated on the tomatoes as well.
How exciting! I am so happy so many germinated. Keep us posted next year when old Valiant vs new Valiant. Thanks Luke for taking us along on this journey. Can't wait until next year to see what happens.
the oldest seeds I've germinated at home so far is 12 years old. Those were seeds saved from homegrown Cherokee purple tomatoes and I think the germination rate after 12 years shocked me - like 75% !!
This is so cool!!! Thanks for sharing
Definitely sprouting at least 37!😊
I am excited about the side by side experiment of the Valient tomatoes! I love it when you do experiments. That's what gardening is, one big experiment!
They will sprout. I think it will be more than half.
I still think you should try the onions.
Luke! Never give up on old seeds! That includes the onions! So awesome to see the tomatoes sprouting! Please give the onions a try. Many Blessings to you from Deborah in West Virginia!
I love the crimson videos... But I wasn't following a long when u did it... I will follow these... And I believe prolly 20% will grow
I also use washed takeout containers with damp paper towels to germinate most of my seeds. Since we still have an old fashioned gas oven, I place them in the heat of the pilot light, which works just as well as a heating mat for germination.
Love this video, love to seed you smile so much when you got this package! I collected seeds from a blue flower that my grandmother grew, I have no idea what kind it is. I going to try to spout them as you did and see if they will grow. The seeds that where collects was over 35 to 40 years ago.
I pray they will sprout and it will be one of the best tomatoes you have ever grown. Please keep us updated.
Wha a wonderful gift. I guess 50%. I can't wait until the new/old seed results.
My mother in law had twenty plus year old seeds kept in the paper packets in a shoe box and I was able to sprout seeds from those packets for years. The germination rate was a little less but I compensated by sewing a little more.
That's awesome! Looking forward to the comparison.
How exciting! I would love to see if any onion seeds will sprout. If you could get a few to grow, you could let them produce seeds. 🙂
Awesome. I was the fourth generation on our family wheat farm. I have several glass jars filled with wheat seed from the early 1900s. They would be soft white wheat as that's what was grown in this area (and still is, but more hybridized). I often think of trying to sprout some. Maybe this fall!
Best end of season teaser ever.
To be continued...
Can’t wait for next year , so fun!
How totally cool! Love it!
All the best from California!🧡
I think 7 will sprout and 2 will survive. This is a really cool experiment. Thanks for doing it. I was wrong! This worked out better than I thought.
I was actually thinking about seed banks the other day, and so I was super interested to see how this worked.
I would love it if you would talk to some seed banks and ask them about viability, and how they do their seed "archiving". Do they just save a lot and hope that some stay viable? Do they freeze dry, freeze? As someone that wants to save his own seeds I would love to learn more about the process. I know this may not be the focus of your channel, but I thought I'd ask!!! Thank you!!!
No idea, but I love experimentation!
Love it. Fun video.
That is so cool that they sprouted. I hope you can try to grow a couple in a grow room or your greenhouse so we can see what they turn into before next growing season. I got some original Abe Lincoln seeds and they are incredible. Huge and meaty unlike what the description said of med to large tomatoes. I don't know if the drift made them smaller or if my seeds where compromised, but I'm going to keep them going..
Just got done with my second planting of fall leaf lettuce. First one was a couple weeks ago, we got a week of ninety plus weather with heavy rain no sprouts so planted again. Fingers crossed!
This is so fun. Thank you to whoever sent them!!!
Very exciting! I can't wait to see next year's experiment with new seeds of the same variety!
Hi Luke,
So with these results on such old seeds, would you recommend we vacuum seal our overstock of seeds? I only ask because I have bought so many different varieties of tomato seeds and of course, other seeds. More than I could ever possibly grow in my lifetime!
I have always thought of my seed collection as one of those things my children would take over when I pass. I would really appreciate your thoughts on this. Catherine
Oh, that pull tab is telling!
Great video, and I'm looking forward to the experiment!
Are you going to sprout the onions too?
Excellent. Thanks for info on germination rates over time. I've got lots and lots of old seeds. Was able to sprout kale that was over 10 years old.
I will buy a tomato from your harvest next year. I would like to preserve that cultivar.
This is so so exciting 😊I love this experiment!
wow, how great!!! I love these episodes
Look at those sprouts. So cute!
This was so cool and exciting! Please keep us updated.
Luke: put some of these in pots, let people buy seedlings who will grow them indoors, in greenhouses and who can create cuttings/ clones so next season more people can try them! I bet people would be interested in growing them indoors through the winter.
pretty cool. looking forward to your planned comparision. When you touched the spoon to the damp paper towel then scooped up more seeds you were adding moisture, however slight, to the seeds you didn't plant. Hope it makes no impact to them.
A friend of mines found some seeds from his aunt's basement (she was 90ish yrs old) that he gave to me They were from 1985 I think. I have collards, giant curled mustards, black beauty squash, sweet snap peas, bush crop cucumbers, royal chantenay carrots, calabrese broccoli, Clemson okra, great lakes lettuce, purple top turnips, summer squash, scarlet globe radish, Copenhagen cabbage, tender green beans, Detroit red beats... I'll been sprouting some of the fall crops this year I can't wait
Yes, I think some will sprout, I had some seeds that my dad saved 30 plus years ago some did sprout just fine.
I followed along for the giant crimson and I'm enjoying this as well.
Thank you now I know where I've been going wrong. Thank you purified water forget the zip locks invest in a heat matt.❤ This was a cool video.
This is so neat. I love it.
Love this! Keep up the good work!
Super excited to see that they sprouted. Amazing! I thought at least two would sprout.
Neat method to sprout. When I do this (in baggies), I use toilet paper instead of paper towels, because if the root travels through a layer of the media, the toilet paper is much easier tear and leave attached to the root.
1978 = 46 years old. I figured it would germinate about 10%, I was pleasantly surprised!
Please do the comparison of current seeds vs these 1978 seeds. Thanks for all you do.
