      The Labour Party has confirmed its intention to implement a policy to remove the exemption from VAT on independent school fees.
      As always with VAT, the rollout of the policy will not be straightforward.
      From a legislation perspective, the law may need to change.

  • @CaldonianDude
    @CaldonianDude 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +21

    What this policy actually does is INCREASE polarization. The rich won't bat an eyelid at the VAT - they'll pay it no problem. It's the middle income strivers who make sacrifices to send their kids to private school who'll have to opt for state education - further increasing the gap between the rich and everyone else. It'll also means they'll have to build more state schools too, and get more state teachers (good luck with that - about 40,000 state school teachers quit in 2023)...

    • @MB-rd2by

      exactly - the rich will pay no problem. great for tax receipts. and it will make sure more ops have a stake in the state sector. those middle incomers are the same ones who tell people who can't afford homes to cancel their Netflix subscriptions. guess they'll have to save, 'strive' and 'sacrifice a bit harder

      Most parents that send their kids to independent schools aren't wealthy and make huge sacrifices to send their children there.
      This raid will just mean that the very rich get to keep their kids in these schools and the low to middle class won't be able to afford it (some with bursaries and those working extra hours or even jobs). Not to mention the kids from poorer backgrounds who are only able to attend due to full bursaries. It's politics of envy and against aspiration. This will not improve public schools and standards.
      I'd be accepting of it if they stopped all the charitable benefits offered to all religious beliefs and buildings of all denominations as well.

    The elephant in the room is the per capita cost to the state for each child in state schools - an average of ca. £6500 per child per year. With a conservative estimate of 10000 children leaving private education, that would be a minimum of £65,000,000 per year. That would certainly make a large dent in the amount gained by the exchequer!

    • @seamuspadraigsanders431
      @seamuspadraigsanders431 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Minimum amount by mathematics is 61,500.
      That's if 10 per cent can't afford new fees.
      I think the number will be 25 per cent.
      This is due to non doms fleeing the country, business closing due to Labours new employment law, and a huge reduction in GDP if Trump wins the election in US as Starmer and Co have called him a red haired, psychopath racist.
      So you're looking at 125, 000 pupils looking for state school places over next 5 years.
      That's closer to 0.8 trillion per annum.

    Surely forcing 40k pupils from private to public sector will;
    1) End up costing nearly as much as you raise in extra tax revenue
    2) Put extra strain on the public education system lowering quality for all pupils
    3) Deprive parents of the ability to use the private sector for their childs education

It does bring attainment more equal but only downwards as teachers will go to nice areas over poor ones any day of the week. Let the brightest be pushed over being taught to the weakest link. It doesnt improve social mobility at all. Labour are the party of class and denying aspirations to the youth of tomorrow, they want to maintain the class system and they want the plebs to know their place in life and that means going to the state system, which can mean a well run school to a school in which can extremely challenging, but all lack resources. The issue is any gifted student in a struggling or difficult school will not full the full potential, because of the students who regard education as unimportant. I know of some schools in which teachers have advised the parents of gifted students to move the children to better schools to ensure they are not held back by the other students. What labour does not want, is ordinary parents scrapping the money together to give their children a better education and so giving them the opportunity to achieve more in life, then they may have achieved, which I would like to think is the aim of all parents. I suspect that all of the Labour front bench and many of their MP's went to private or grammar schools, and so do many of their children. Diane Abbott who said parents should send their children to a local state school, but sent her children to a private school, many miles away, hypocrisy in action.
    Labour are still spending the same money on different policies by closing the same tax loopholes, but the rich can move to other nations and never fully costed, despite what they say, for example, VAT on schools is estimated to generate £1.5 billion, but students from grammar or private schools, but the 6500 new teachers will cost an estimated £1.6 billion. But the 1.5 billion is meant to cover the shortages in subjects like maths and the sciences and not the increase student numbers in state schools. Even if the VAT was spent on new teachers, just look at the facts, a new science teacher starting pay is around £25000, plus a retention payment and the pay rises in year two, and continues to rise in succeeding years, however the VAT income will decrease in succeeding years as student numbers and schools close in the independent sector. So the sums do not add up, especially when you divide 1.5 billion by 6500, and you will find the pay would be less then £25000 that a new teacher gets now and before pay rises are added. Crucially most new teachers leave the profession within five years due to students behaviour, including assaults on staff, workload, inspections and pressures to constantly get 'x' number of students achieving good grades. I know people will say that teachers have twelve week holidays, start at 9 and finish at 4, but my advice is train to become a teacher and you will know this is a myth, in the holidays you are planning and marking and you should be in school by 8 at the latest and can be there turn 5, besides taking work home with you as well So to meet the VAT is an attack on aspirational parents, left wing ideology and a desire to ensure the lower classes do not get aspirations beyond their station in life.

    This is such a Short-Sighted Policy...Imposing a 20% VAT on private schools is not just about hitting the wealthy. It’s an ill-conceived policy that will increase pressure on already struggling state schools, diminish educational opportunities for lower-income families, and reduce innovation in the education sector. This short-term revenue grab will have long-term negative impacts on the entire education system and society as a whole.
    Currently, 7% of UK students are educated in private schools, which helps reduce the burden on state-funded schools. Private schools save the government approximately £3-4 billion annually by educating students without using public resources. If private school fees rise due to VAT, many families will be forced to pull their children out and turn to the already overburdened state sector. State schools are already facing funding shortfalls, increasing class sizes, and teacher shortages.
    An influx of students from the private sector will only worsen these challenges, further straining resources and compromising the quality of education for all children. Contrary to popular belief, many private school students are not from extremely wealthy backgrounds. Schools offer significant bursaries and scholarships to students from lower-income families. In fact, 10% or more of their income is often allocated to support these students. A 20% VAT will make it harder for these schools to offer such financial assistance, thereby reducing opportunities for talented children from less privileged backgrounds to access high-quality education. This move disproportionately hurts middle-class families who already stretch their budgets to afford private education. The result will be fewer families being able to access this option, effectively making private schools an exclusive privilege for the ultra-wealthy and exacerbating educational inequality. Innovations developed in private schools often find their way into the state sector, helping raise standards across the board.
    Forcing private schools to hike fees due to VAT will diminish their capacity to invest in these innovations, reducing the diversity of educational offerings in the UK. It limits choices for parents and students, stifling the flexibility and creativity that are so vital in education. Private schools contribute significantly to social mobility by offering scholarships and bursaries, allowing talented students from less affluent backgrounds to attend. Increasing fees will lead to reduced access, further entrenching socio-economic divides. This move is counterproductive to building a fair and inclusive society. Moreover, private schools are significant employers and contribute to the economy through local spending, infrastructure, and jobs. Higher fees could lead to declining student numbers, potentially resulting in school closures or staff reductions, which will negatively impact the economy. Countries like Singapore recognize the value of private schools and actively collaborate with them.
    Singapore’s government encourages a healthy balance between public and private education, seeing the private sector as essential for providing alternative educational pathways and attracting international talent. The UK should be following a similar model, not penalizing private schools with punitive taxes that will damage their competitiveness and reputation on the global stage. Singapore spends around S$10,000 - S$12,000 (£5,800 - £7,000) annually per student in primary and secondary education. This is comparable to UK state school spending but delivered in a highly efficient and centralized system. As of 2023, the average government spending per student in state secondary schools is approximately £6,500 per year. For primary schools, this figure is slightly lower, around £5,000 per year. The UK government allocated around £56 billion for schools in England in 2022-2023. This covers teacher salaries, school infrastructure, and other operational costs. Despite the overall budget, many state schools face funding shortfalls. A 2022 report indicated that around 50% of state schools in England were facing financial difficulties, with increasing class sizes and cuts to non-core subjects (like music, arts) being common coping strategies.
    It is also important to remember that parents who send their children to private schools have already paid income tax on the money they use to pay school fees. Many of these parents are middle-class families making significant sacrifices to afford private education. To impose an additional 20% VAT on top of what they’ve already paid is effectively double taxation and deeply unfair.

      Yeah and it's been heavily ignored because those who tend to hold the money don't send their kids to public schools - they send them to private schools which aren't impacted by this issue. So hopefully now after this change they may actually begin to start taking seriously the quality of education in public schools rather than continuously brushing it under the rug when it doesn't effect their kids.

    • @hairiwish
      @hairiwish 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      But labour plan is flawed! The 20% won't affect the politicians that send their kids to private school! Only 7% of school age kids in the UK are in private education. Yet 7% somehow miraculously will fund the gap for the 93% in the state schools? Surely parents that pay their taxes and send their kids to private school should get some tax rebate then. I'm tired of the Tories but these labour lot are simply not the answer....

    A major issue in UK state schools is the amount of foreign children who get a free education in this country - their parents making minimal or zero tax contributions yet their children get free state education.
    British schools should be free for British children not half the world - its a complete scam look at the demographics - it came out on the sly from nurseries UK that ethnic/ foreign children now outnumber white British children - just think what this country will be like in 15/20 years - it will be the third world.
    Time to pack up and move on - lets make a better place for ourselves and our children and watch this country rot. They sold us white british families out so bye bye.

It is their children using the state school service 8:30am - 3:30pm, Mon-Fri, when the state fund is not enough, they should pay! Actually, most of them have decent income, multiple houses and luxury holidays! We hard working private school parents should not pay for them! We have already giving the resource to them for free and paid our tax! Leave our children alone!
