Truly is amazing to see a carrier or a submarine being built from scratch, but i eventually left to work for a small shop because the shipyard was just too huge. I agree. As not only a US Navy veteran who served on the USS Nimitz during Operation Southern Watch, I am also an avid Navy history buff. It is awesome to see the Doris Miller Aircraft Carrier being made. I just wonder if they will make a Muriel Twibel ship next, since he was a tinkerer during WW2 and made the Rescue Breathing Apparatus that, I think is still being used even today, in the aide of fighting fires and preventing smoke inhalation when fighting fires on board Navy ships.

    • @gumbo8893
      @gumbo8893 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I disagree. I think we should go back to naming our aircraft carriers after great battles like Yorktown, Lexington, Saratoga and Essex. I don't like the idea of naming our carriers after people, presidents or otherwise. Battles like Midway, Coral Sea and Philippine Sea are more modern naval battles that have all had carriers named after them as well. I would also love to see some of the other historical names used like Hornet, Wasp and Enterprise. I was very happy to see the new Enterprise though!

I talked to a buddy that served in the reactor department onboard and he said there were only 6 when he served on her and they really only had 4 going at a time. The engineers who designed the ship figured a 1 for 1 boiler to reactor as if it were an oil fired ship, but it turned out that the reactors much better at making steam than oil fired boilers were so they “overbuilt” her.

    This is great but we really need to ramp up US Naval shipbuilding. We as a nation need to be producing at least 4 to 5 times as many ship as we are currently. Otherwise we are going to fall behind the Chinese in functional warships soon. I know that we have a tonnage and missile advantage to the Chinese but that could soon erode if we do not do something about it and I know we can do something. We proved it in WW2 when we built over 1200 warships in just 4 years, building 400 to 500 in the next 17 years doesn't seem impossible.

My first two years aboard her was in and out of Newport News during shakedown and post shakedown availability. Then did a 3 month North Atlantic cruise and a 3 month GITMO, then an 8 month Med cruise. Got out just as Desert Storm was brewing up. But just outside the carrier drydock was a strip of Asian restaurants we call Ho Chi Min Trail. Some of the best Korean and Vietnamese food I have ever had to this day. I should have joined the navy in the late 80s instead of the Army! It was hard to pass up the college assistance the US Army was willing to give me. I would have been happier in the US Navy. I always wanted to serve on an aircraft carrier. The USS Lexington came down to NOLA one year when I was still in high school. She was a training carrier at the time but to walk in her hanger deck was awe inspiring! After having read about all the WW2 battles and the carriers that served in the US Navy during WW2 all through my childhood, being able to walk her decks was a real treat! Every once in a while I go see the USS Alabama and USS Texas too. I have yet to go see the USS Kidd in Baton Rouge. I need to do that soon. These Ford Class carriers are very impressive to see. BUT, I believe the Navy should design & build a much smaller & much faster carrier for drones, vertical attack jets & attack helos only & smaller number of personel..This newly designed ship would be very different in its looks, design, & construction with its emphasis in speed.

    Compare what Newport News is doing to those guys in Murmansk . . . the last I saw, the Russians were roasting marshmallows on the deck and the carrier caught fire. Over the din of the blaze, one could still hear somebody yelling, "Save the vodka!"

    Great video. We need to start obtaining new fleet of ships. A report done not to long ago stated the Navy is behind on ship building and the Chinese Navy will surpass number of ships we have in 2033. I think if I remember, the US used to have 11 ( maybe more) ship building facilities, now we are down to six ( thanks to the great leadership we have in office currently). We need to get on the ball.

    one shipyard is not enough. if you check out chinese PLA navy info, they have more shipyards and building more powerful destroyers Type 055, at a faster pace

    • @loonowolf2160
      @loonowolf2160 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah at faster pace means problems on has results on long run, so what u prefer something on great quality on slow pace that will give result, or trust a country that get things at fast pace while knowing their buildings are made of tofu and can collapse at any earthquake? Better trust the USN decision on how they want to build their things

  • @Erik-gg2vb

    This video could had been made longer with slower frame rates. So much stuff to see. Maybe better so the chinese can't learn to much.
    Why the need to shade out the corner and front edge section of that keel segment is beyond me. What possibly be so important?
