1905 my great grandmother was visiting her sister in Boston. She got off the train and walked over a mile to her sister's apartment. She walked through a very bad neighborhood to do so. Two young men pulled out knives and tried to rob my great grandmother. She was having none of that. I don't know the details but she disarmed the two men and grabbed them by the ears and marched them nearly a mile to the nearest police station and by the time they got there the two men were balling their eyes out like little girls and eagerly confessed to their crimes. Then my great grandmother walked all the way back to her sister's apartment a bit late in the process and not a scratch on her. I also have her collection of 47 hat pins. I have no idea if any hat pins were involved in the above or not. Meanwhile, she also was the first woman in her county to run for public office. She was elected to town council in her town three times prior to women getting the vote. Her campaign strategy? First she contacted all the wives in her precinct. She spoke to each one. Then she visited every man in her district. She didn't ask for their vote. She merely said "you are going to vote for me." She won all three elections by a landslide before retiring from that office in 1919 to pursue her business interests. She was also a midwife. She gave birth six times and without any aid. She said she didn't need any help as she knew how it worked. She was the midwife also for all 17 of her grandchildren and three of her great grandchildren.

Damn! Unassisted childbirth six times in the late 1800s/early 1900s is just as badass as being elected before she could vote!

I have a vintage hat pin, about 7" long with a pink crystal finial on the end. They had to hold those big hats secure somehow! 🌹❤️🇺🇸

Besides hat pins, they put heavy things in their handbags (not ridicules, could be). They would be hard enough to swing them over their heads to knock the “masher” hard! And then there were lady-like personal guns. Those guns looked like toys, and they were heavy so they could swing them in their handbags. But close up, those little guns could hurt a “masher” or at least scare him to not try to do more. These guns probably were not lethal, but could hurt, and maybe damage the man’s eye!
And it may not only be the “Victorian Age,” but the Edwardian Age as well.

I believe The Disney live action Movie of Cruela Made a very subtle reference to this

Bring these back. Remember ladies, it's faster to switch to your hatpin than to reload your Derringer (ladies should go back to carryung derringers as well).

Times change, but seems Kansans haven’t. 😁 Too many of the men are unfortunately still the same, luckily the women are still as resilient and dangerous 😅
