I love watching other people garden because it's one of my favorite things to do but I can't because we rent. I can do small pots of plants but that's it. It sounds like you have a lot of rock in your soil.
I love your yard!! We went with a stamped concrete patio for that reason “weeds”. I will ask my landscaper what he uses again for the weeds in the sidewalk, I know it was safe and also safe for pets. You inspired me to plant some veggies in grow bags, I too am a newbie with that😊
you have a beautiful property...lots of loving work to be done ...but think of the great feeling when you get some done....with a garden...it is NEVER FINISHED !!!! hahahahahahah
Nick, my mama always taught me to break apart the "clump" of roots and soil as I took it out of the pot I was moving the plant from. You don't have to do anything more than just hold the entire thing in your hand and give it a slight squeeze to gently break the soil apart, and that also frees up the roots, which can then spread out more, and give the plant a sturdier foundation. You only have to give it one slight squeeze - don't pull the roots apart and separate them. Just break up that clump. Good luck with all your garden, hon! I'm excited to watch as it grows, and as you build your outdoor oasis. Much Love!💜🫂
Big hello from Canada EH .. I'm on the West Coast of Beautiful British Columbia! Love the yard .. so much room for all kinds of projects! I hate to say it ... but I've battled the weeds/grass between the patio bricks .. grrr ... tried most of the wacky ways you find on google ... sadly though its get a good tool and dig them out .. I did rent a good power washer then I went to work with the weeding tool for patio brick work .. then I got some pavers sand and filled the gaps between the brick ... tamping it down with a tamping tool .. was a HUGE amount of work .. so I do wish you the best of luck with the darn ole weeds!
I'm at 7:36 in the video, where you are showing the old garden from the previous owners. My choice for such a space would be a koi pond, surrounded by stones and a waterfall on one side and a slide (can't think of the word I want to use to describe it) that isn't blocked with anything but a border of smaller (similar sized) stones for planting maybe wild flower mixes? I realize that means yearly planting and not a annual planting. Okay, back to the video. ;)
For next year, you should use all that wood from your old garden in a hugelkultur. We live in a wooded area and use dead trees and branches in our garden. It's amazing. I can't keep indoor plants alive, but my vegetable garden lives well.
Homemade weed killer can be made with 1 gal vinegar 30% acidic, 1 qt water, 1 cup salt and about 1 tbl dish soap. Mix and spray. Should see results in about 3 days. An alternative to grow bags could be greenstalk grow towers.
Before I even get into watching the video I've got to give my thoughts of grow bags. Now I realize a lot of it depends on the care they are given. For Christmas I was gifted a Strawberry plant that is supposed to have white berries. It was in one of these grow bags. The outside of the bag was so moldy and crud growing on it I had to get the poor plant transplanted into a good, well draining pot. I personally would never use them for any of my plants.
You asked how to keep the cobblestone patio free of weeds... They make a long handled blowtorch specifically for killing weeds. Give that a try, if you don't want to use pesticide because of the herbs growing in the area. And, yes, we DO want to see Andrew in your videos! But I will always be Team Nick!! LOL 😆🤣
I know with rhubarb, just plant in ground. It grows like weeds lol. When dealing with slugs, use beer and that is about my plant knowledge lol. Except, I am ok at growing herbs in a box lol. I dabble in green witchery lol.
Now at 13:22... .LOL With the plants like beans, peas are you going to do something that they can climb? Cucumbers and the like are more of a ground crawler. Eeesh, I'm remembering more from produce gardening from when I was growing up than I thought I would. Sorry to inundate with information you probably already know.
Last year I used growbags for the first time and what I find is that I had to water them daily. This year is also challenging with the grow bags. They drain too fast.
My Day Lily is inside my house for now and I just noticed tear drop on the tip of its leaf. I wiped it off and asked it off was sad. Does he like where I put him on the table near the window with indirect sunlight. The next day still a tear drop exact same place. Plant looks healthy with a lot of open flowers and bright leaves. 🍃
Unfortunately with the weeds that are coming up through your patio... when it was constructed there should have been a weed cloth or some sort of base used through which stuff like that wouldn't have grown up through. Sort of taking it all up and reconstructing I don't know what to suggest aside from chemical products to take care of that issue.
Nick, for your patio you can buy creeping thyme seed in bulk and scatter to fill in the spaces; it will smell amazing when you walk on it. If you use pesticides, dogs can lick it off their paws and can become very sick. I use 3 or 5 gallon food safe plastic buckets to plant in. Use a cheap soldering iron to melt some drainage holes in bottom and sides....perfect ! 😎
@@URBANFARMBOYS I think eventually you will choke out the weeds. Pull out what you can and keep filling in with the thyme seeds. Creeping thyme grows low and flowers !
Hi Nick. I am so happy to see another video from you and love when you show us what you are working on. I love the term "decision fatigue" and I allow myself to get into that state sometimes and now glad to have a label to express it. PERFECT term. I am sure everything you are doing regarding the yard, patio etc is going to look beautiful. I am doing a container garden as I just can't physically really work in the yard anymore. I have a typical city row home yard and I love that my neighbors all love to garden as well and use solar lights and use the space we have to make our corner of the world look nice. Do you use solar lighting? I love looking out back at night and seeing everyone's lights lit. I follow you on Instagram now as well. Best wishes with everything! Team Nick 100 %
Decision fatigue is a real thing that I often suffer from!! We do have solar lighting actually - it makes things so cozy at night. Our forest twinkles!
It was so funny !
When you started putting the grow bags on the porch.
Your dog was there eating and it looked like the dog was talking. 😂😂😂
OMG I wish he could talk!!! I wonder what he would say?!

“I think your mom sticks out too much” had me chortling. 😂
I'm 12. I still love a "your mom" joke.

You have a gorgeous property. Love these videos 😊😊😊 I too love plants and crochet and nursing. I’m a retired RN 😊
Loved this one. Here for your crochet content but loving the gardening too. :) your interactions crack me up.
Your backyard is so large and beautiful. Love all those tall trees in the background and the sound of all those birds. Lovely!
It's so soothing!

Gahhhhh so much work! I feel like that will be my future too. Also hello EH! I love BC! I'd live there if I could afford Vancouver!

Wow I just took a deep dive into hugelkultur. What a cool concept!!

It's storming here in Northern Indiana as I'm watching this. Both are comforting. I absolutely love your house and property. Looks nice .
Thank you so much!!

That’s what I’m afraid of. Maybe I’ll need to set them in trays so they retain a little more water. We’ll see how it goes…

Make some very hot water and add salt. They hate hot salt water. Kills the weeds but not the family!
I was going to say this ! Glad theres smart people like us on here lol!
I love this comment! Do you have a salt:water ratio that works?
@@URBANFARMBOYS boiling water and we just dumped salt in we didnt measure

Ooh good idea!!! Maybe I should embrace having plants in the cracks by planting creeping thyme. I wonder if it would choke out the weeds?
