Something about this song. It has an almost timeless, sad, melancholy ring to it. Like that special place when you were a kid that you could go escape to.

Had the great pleasure of meeting this man some years ago. He came to my shop several times to buy wood, one time he brought his guitar and played a mini concert for us. He is an exceptionally nice human being.
Excellent Story ! John is one of the greatest storytellers on stage that was all a part of that generation of performers he maybe a little older and deeper in his voice but his stage presence and guitar work is right on
I am starting to re-watch Welcome Back Kotter for the 100th Time. I was 7 years old when the show came on TV. I loved it then and I love it now. FYI. I am a sweathog as well. Thanks for a great song John Sebastian.
One of my all time musical heroes. I was in grade school when the Lovin' Spoonful blew me away with ''Daydream''. Great to see John Sebastian performing,...at his present best.
I saw John do this tune on Johnny Carson when it first came out. I loved his troubadour style. A treasure for sure. Such a good natured spirit and his songs are always that. It shows. Thank you John S. for just being you.
A bit before my time, i'm 41, but my dad loved his stuff and I have his records from when my dad was young. He's so chill and amazing. Great to listen to stoned, or not, but better stoned.
First id like to say this is absolutely the best sit- com theme song EVER. Second Audience here : are we getting paid to participate as the chorus gets stronger 🥰
John's singing voice is sounding a little like Louie Armstrong now....gravelly. Still, the guitar playing and warm manner are still there. Bravo John!! We'd like to say Welcome Back, but the truth is, you never went away.
any of us have a place where we had a lot of joy and wanted to go back to, my place is in Massachussets small town I used to live name Acton also Boston.
There was a God-given wholesomeness about the America of the past. The wholesomeness that a self-imposed willingness to not transgress the boundaries of decency brings. A sense of decency and courtesy so lacking in today's America. That self-control IS essential to one's strength of character. That character isn't just about one's personal self-image and the kind of person you see yourself to be. It carries with it a sense of pride and confidence in oneself that manifest collectively in pride in one's country and in patriotism. You see your country as decent and wholesome because you yourself and the people you meet everyday are for the most part decent and wholesome. They are intertwined and builds on each other. Unfortunately, all so lacking in today's America.
Made the "toy record". John once said the songs that "buy you your house" are the ones you write in 15 minutes. The music is so catchy and the words fit to a T.
As a very young child in the 70s when this when welcome back kotter aired I thought the theme was sung by Freddie Washington (lawrence hilton jacobs) and the background saying the welcome back welcome back part was sung by the other sweathogs.
Welcome Back Kotter came out in 1975 I was born in 1977 my mother liked that show I liked it when John Travolta was in it and now I like his action movies instead my mother also like the loving spoonful and others before she died in 2005
John B. Sebastian is a wonderful songwriter, guitarist, and harmonica player. Sadly, he suffers from a throat condition which brought the singing part of his career to an end.
westy40 I’m sorry, but I can’t answer that. Only thing I know is that it’s a permanent condition. If you go on TH-cam and listen to John sing, you’ll understand what I mean.
Tim Why not answer it? We are sympathetic to his plight. I am a lifelong fan. Another example of unrevealed illness was Paul Williams of the Temptations. He suffered from sickle cell anemia and died, probably murdered. As a Temptations fan, I have more sympathy for him, having seen him perform in the classic five and knowing some of his history.
He explained in another video that the name of the show was Kotter and he knew he couldn't do much with that. So he came up with the "Welcome Back" phrase and they then changed the name of the show to match the song.
My g ma is old and she knows this and hey good looking so she said it her job to teach me songs and I started to listen to it today and it is stuck in my mind and I love this song #love it but my g ma is going to wake up soo I gtg oh btw stay safe guys
I absolutely adore this song. Thank you JS!
Something about this song. It has an almost timeless, sad, melancholy ring to it. Like that special place when you were a kid that you could go escape to.
To me it's kind of happy and sad at the time. Like a nostalgic feeling.
Exactly , I couldn't put my finger on it.
With tears in me eyes, I was just thinking that thought

Exactly. You just described nostalgia.
Its a PRIVILEDGE to still have him..and whats left of the "voices" that defined the 60s and 70s..🙏🙏🙏
So his voice is older and different who cares?he wrote it and the crowd loves it.love that beautiful guitar too!
Had the great pleasure of meeting this man some years ago. He came to my shop several times to buy wood, one time he brought his guitar and played a mini concert for us. He is an exceptionally nice human being.
John Sebastian is a genius songwriter. One of the best of all time.
Who ever would've thought John Sebastian would become a national treasure.

He had a tons of hits with the Lovin Spoonful but Welcome Back was his only good solo song for the rest of his career
I love this song. Brings back awesome childhood memories. Thanks John for making a wonderful song!
He seems like such a warm, friendly man. Very likeable.
Same thoughts.
Yes, He always seems so settled and easy. 👍👍🇦🇺
He is, I've met him several times, as down to earth as they come.
One of the best written songs Ever
Absolutely incredible!! Such class!! I grew up with this show! Welcome to the 70's! Your the best, John.
Excellent Story ! John is one of the greatest storytellers on stage that was all a part of that generation of performers he maybe a little older and deeper in his voice but his stage presence and guitar work is right on

Always love when brilliant songwriters tell stories that make the process sound so insanely easy! What an absolute genius and a treasure this man is!
I’m 37 years old. This is one of the songs I’ve known for the longest.
Beautiful. Just beautiful. To all who are feeling down these days just sing this song.
I am starting to re-watch Welcome Back Kotter for the 100th Time. I was 7 years old when the show came on TV. I loved it then and I love it now. FYI. I am a sweathog as well. Thanks for a great song John Sebastian.

Me too, I just love it!- Still--!!
Same here.
He should be a national treasure. His generation is slipping away from us.
One of my all time musical heroes. I was in grade school when the Lovin' Spoonful blew me away with ''Daydream''. Great to see John Sebastian performing,...at his present best.

I have had a crush on him since Woodstock. And love his music too.
This song has never not made me smile!
A bit before my time, i'm 41, but my dad loved his stuff and I have his records from when my dad was young. He's so chill and amazing. Great to listen to stoned, or not, but better stoned.
Voice is going, but the spirit is still there.
First id like to say this is absolutely the best sit- com theme song EVER. Second Audience here : are we getting paid to participate as the chorus gets stronger 🥰
And as expected he Still sounds spectacular!

You can't listen to John without a smile on your face.
His voice sounds way better than it did a few years ago. And that is great to see.
BRAVO my friend. Still as good as it ever was . Thank you !!
The story that he tells us true John's Bastian. That song welcome back. Carter was one of its biggest head to ball time.
What a wonderful tune.
Ahhhhhh....the days of real talent.
I remember when I was a boy and watch Welcome Back Kotter, I am from Mexico
John's singing voice is sounding a little like Louie Armstrong now....gravelly. Still, the guitar playing and warm manner are still there. Bravo John!! We'd like to say Welcome Back, but the truth is, you never went away.

Masterpiece.
Still love you John.
I saw John open for Steve Martin back in 1978or 79 . 6th row center San Diego
His voice was softer before but hello, aging people, everything breaks down.
All Stewart once said that writing a hit song is like having a rich uncle to pay your mortgage.
He still sounds great!
i love u man.. i hope to see u again in woodstock sometime
You gotta love him!!
Voice suffered big time, but still fun to hear.......
any of us have a place where we had a lot of joy and wanted to go back to, my place is in Massachussets small town I used to live name Acton also Boston.
Incredible story. Great theme song!
THE GREATEST THEME SONG EVER WRITTEN!!
Awesome still
I saw John live in the 1980s at the Miami Metro Zoo the year it opened damn he was great
My eight year old daughter likes to hear Welcome Back Kotter theme song to put her to sleep. She said it's such a nice song that relaxes her
I guess that the speed that John created the song made the guys in Burbank "Believe in Magic"!
Nostalgic song
U still sound good John❤❤

The song has aged way better than the show
Would love to hear the demo.

I hear this song all the time, maybe I'm tuned into it because I'm a "sweathog".
Welcome Back Kotter came out in 1975 I was born in 1977 my mother liked that show I liked it when John Travolta was in it and now I like his action movies instead my mother also like the loving spoonful and others before she died in 2005
Timeless song. His voice shit, but still great. Love it.

Thomas Pick Because I don’t know. Clear enough?
Disphonia. Still sounds good in a different way. Hes cool as hell.
He’s a genius!
❤️
He's alright🇺🇸🎼🙏!
Beautiful face. Warm.
When he started talking I thought it was David Lee Roth. 😂🤣 I had to go back and look at the title of the video
He explained in another video that the name of the show was Kotter and he knew he couldn't do much with that. So he came up with the "Welcome Back" phrase and they then changed the name of the show to match the song.
My son, 3 years old, sings welcome back better than me when we two are in the car before I let him at the primary school. What a shame for me!
My g ma is old and she knows this and hey good looking so she said it her job to teach me songs and I started to listen to it today and it is stuck in my mind and I love this song #love it but my g ma is going to wake up soo I gtg oh btw stay safe guys
This song makes me smile
😁
Is he alive or dead
I guess I’m Mr. Kotter. I teach hs history to a bunch of knuckleheads. And I love it.
How can you not love this?
Sounds like Nick Nolte now ❤️
Imagine what that demo would go for on Ebay! but it sad to hear him choke
His voice is some satchmo
