I met him at a NAAM show and I was the only person to recognize him as he sat quietly sipping tea. I asked for his autograph and he invited me to sit with him. We talked for 20-25 minutes before his rude woman came over and interrupted us. Super nice man.

I had pretty much the same experience at NAMM in Anaheim several years ago.
Like you I recognized him, and he could not have been any more gracious. I exchanged my contact information with him, and to my amazement he actually wrote me 'thanking me' for the experience. Needless to say, 'My Mind Was Completely Blown Away' by the sincere humility of this absolute Rock-N-Roll legend. 😊
God bless John Sebastian, and may he live a long, long life. ❤
His wonderful contribution to American music is almost unequaled. ⚘⚘⚘

I stood next to John Sebastian at LAX in the 1960's when he was checking in for his flight to New York to be the "Ed Sullivan Show" in January 1967. I remember he had these very 60's boots on, brown leather with some sort of fringe on the top 4 inches. Old memory, but it ties me to a special time and a special group.

I saw John open for Steve Martin in '77 or '78. I felt embarrassed for him that most of the crowd only reacted when he sang "Welcome Back," the theme song to Welcome Back, Kotter. His music of the '60s was SOOO much better than that. I wore out their greatest hits album.

Been waiting a few days for this, knew you would come through. Few could 'create' a song like John Sebastian could do. Don't you sweat when you listen to 'Summer In the City'? Don't you feel whimsical listening to 'Did You Ever Have To Make Up Your Mind'? Don't you feel for the guy when you hear 'Didn't Want To Have To Do It'? He's one of the few performers that I remember from my one day at Woodstock. Yes it was lightly raining, and humid, and muddy. The Spoonful's music was at the top of my list, and I still cherish those days. Looking forward to part 2. Thanks as always Joe!

Wow! That is also true with me! At our local elementary school family fair, with three of my 6th grade buddies. But the real memory is when we first realized that we sounded quite good as we started rehearsing for the upcoming gig! We set up in the drummer's front yard He had one snare drum and three of us were banging out the same chords on our Silvertones. I sang lead vocal, and actually had a microphone! No audience, but two of the guy's mother's were truly impressed. That's all we needed! Such a proud moment! "Do you believe like I believe!"
I still play a bunch of those songs when I gig, and people love them!

Your interviews are so good Joe. YOu ask a question and we get to hear all these wonderful stories and thoughts and you provide great follow up questions. I love when you insert pictures of places or people, records etc. of what the guest is talking about from close to the time frame they are talking about. Adds a lot. I would say these are like historical records for anyone learning or interested in the many facets of music through the years in America and abroad. From people who lived it and can provide details and insights that will be preserved for generations on. I find them very inspiring especially how people got started and their early years and clues to other artists to explore some not so popular but still influential. Greenwich Village for sure was a cauldron for so many people. John's insight into early Dylan is fascinating. Wonder what changed with him? The before the don't look back reference might be a clue.

      @MusiciansHallofFameMuseum  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

James… thank you. Very kind of you to say. Yes we spend a lot of extra time adding the pictures. Jay McDowell who is my camera man is also who dives in and finds these pictures (and yes tries to make them period correct) and edits them together. It’s gratifying when our friends like you share how much they add to the interviews and we truly appreciate it. I too was struck how John mentioned the “ Two” Bob Dylan’s… before and after the great documentary “Don’t Look Back” which shows that typewriter John talks about keeping him awake that Bob used to write many of his songs. I hate to say it since I no longer have them but back in the mid 80’s I owned many of those original typed and handwritten Dylan lyrics from that very typewriter. ( Don’t ask) best, Joe

Back in the day there was a time when it was hip to be negative, as Mr Bob Seger pointed out, and there was more conformity going on in the music scene then there was in the U.S. Army. I have to be forever grateful for that otherwise I would never have discovered some of the most brilliant and wonderful artists and musicians ever. Starting with John Sebastian whom I still listen to pretty regularly, but other greats like the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Doc Watson and Bill Monroe, a host of country crossover artists before it was the thing that were making it famous in small clubs all over the Rocky Mountains, who would jam on stage with some of the best folk singers, and on off nights get to see some of the elite Mississippi Delta blues artists cashing in on what notoriety they could get, all too numerous for me to count here (Sonny Terry & Brownie Magee come most to mind). It was the greatest time to be a music lover... Back In '72!

Another great interview Joe, you keep coming up with them. I was hooked on the Spoonful's music as soon as I heard Daydream. Summer in the City is certainly one of the great tracks but doesn't get the credit it deserves. John seems a really nice bloke and is a good storyteller.
I liked the helicopter story especially. I remember the EP Did You Ever Have To Make Up Your Mind' coming out in maybe 1966 and I loved it.
It also had Jug Band Music and This Sporting Life plus maybe one other track. I've still got the EP and it's in an old record cabinet on top of a wardrobe. Shame. John is definitely one of my heroes and I'm sure a hero to many. Thanks Joe. Love your channel.

We'd seen Sebastian at McCabe's in Santa Monica I believe, at the behest of a friend and I went along under mild protest. What we enjoyed was just a man and his guitar and his stories, grand humor and an obvious love for performance.
A benchmark for me will always be the multiple offerings of Sir Paul McCartney I have witnessed. McCartney was always having the most fun of anyone in the building. When a performer has that affect it saturates the entire crowd.

I met John a few years ago after a wonderful performance in NC. He was extremely nice to us and generous with his time after the show. He signed several of my old Lovin’ Spoonful LP’s, a CD or two, and we took many photos while we were at it. John’s performance that evening was fantastic and his attitude toward all who wished to meet him afterward was what any fan would hope for. It’s always fun to meet an artist that you’ve listened to and admired for decades and then getting to see they are also great person as well. Thank you John for sharing your gift of music and your kindness towards your fans for all of these years! Your signed LP’s and the photos we took that evening are now permanently and proudly displayed in my music room among my collection of music memorabilia and instruments. You are a class act!

@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum Joe I was in Nashville In 1985 when the Mother Church was awfully forlorn. That area of Broadway was populated with panhandlers. 12th Avenue near Station Inn looked like an area where people would dump dead bodies. Union Station was in the process of rebuilding. In the words of Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys “Time Changes Everything”.

I moved to Nashville in 1978. I first came here in 1975. Opryland Hotel asked me to put together a house band for their Vega style big club… The Stage Door Lounge. Two level… balcony….. great gig. We played there for about 8 months straight and got done playing at 11:40. We then partied at the Nashville Palace across the street until 2:00 am when they closed. Then we went to Downtown Nashville. Not Broadway. Second and Third Ave’s to empty buildings 4 stories plus tall with no renters except the bottom floors that were private after hours clubs. All the bartenders and waitresses went straight there when the legal clubs closed. You knocked on the door. If they knew you they would let you in. Like the roaring 20’s Speakeasies. We left as the sun was rising. It was fun but kinda scary. Best, Joe

I did think the Lovin Spoonful were great and of course, John Sebastián. I myself was a singer in vocal groups and bands in the 1960s, where I began to play diatonic harmonica, mostly blues. But, this post is about John's Dad. My Dad, like his, was a classical musician, a violist in the Philadelphia Orchestra. I moved from Philly to Seattle in 1972. One day, in 1973, I was listening to Seattle's classical station, KING-FM and the announcer said that after the news break on the hour, we would be hearing a concerto for harmonica & orchestra. So ASAP, I lined up a blank tape on my reel-to-reel tape recorder. Just after I did, the announcer said "and now Alexander Tcherepnin's Concerto for Harmonica & Orchestra, John Sebastian, harmonica, The Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra, Hans Schweiger, conducting." This was the first classical piece for harmonica I had heard. It simply blew me away and yes, I got it all on tape, which I later copied onto a cassette, when my reel to reel became impractical.
Classical chromatic harmonica. A sound like no other. So unique. John's Dad was a tremendous musician and after that, I found more and more classical harmonica to listen to.

Excellent interview. One of the nuns who taught me in elementary school had an autoharp and showed it to us and played it a little. I loved the sound of the instrument, but it wasn't an instrument I had ever seen any of the pop musicians play. This was before the Spoonful. That instrument, despite it having a kind of a low class reputation, really sounded good on the Spoonful recordings.

Thanks so much for this one, Joe. My first rock concert was Rick Derringer and his band The McCoys at the Van Wert, Ohio fairgrounds in the fall of 1965, but in August 1966 my second was a double bill at the Ohio State Fair featuring The Lovin' Spoonful and Herman's Hermits performing on a stage in the middle of the rodeo arena. I was 15 and had already figured out that John Sebastian and his band were much better musicians and songwriters than Peter Noone and his group, and they proved it that afternoon -- especially on your favorite "Summer In the City," which hit #1 on the charts that August.
