There's an interview about this song on song exploder, where phoebe talks about when they first mixed it and were listening to it with her producer... the outro finishes he spins around in his chair with a single tear down his face and says "it's like you're looking back on your life and it's all been a failure" lol they took that as the best compliment haha I'll never forget that 😭
lol Stranger in the Alps is a fantastic, critically acclaimed album. Your opinion is wrong. Also there are loads and loads of fantastic bands around today "made of real musicians", youre just too blind to see them because youre stuck in the past.
Well you supposed wrong, I dont like Ed. I respect your devotion to your craft but frankly you're wrong on this matter. Phoebe's act isn't about keeping a tight 4/4 at 118 bpm or implementing complex chord progressions, this may sound cliché but it's about the emotion she transmits through her lyrics and performance. You may be able to learn to play her songs in a few minutes but I doubt you could learn the feeling she puts into them. And it's hardly a matter of subjective/objective when most musical critics will back me up in saying that Stranger In The Alps is a good album. Sounds are just timed vibrations but good music is more than that.
"Anyway, don't be a stranger" really manages to capture letting a little bit of that that manipulative and abusive person into your life once everything is said and done. There are numerous interpretations, but damn. Gets me every time.
I’ve always understood that lyric as that time where you still wanna be friends with your ex even though that’s just an excuse to still have them in your life and keep up with them. And even though you know it’s unhealthy and you should cut it off totally, you can’t. Fascinating to hear what that means for everyone else.
for me dont be a stranger is when you want to still friend with someone but you both are getting old and are busy and the things are not the same, but you dont want that this person that you like so much became a stranger one day
for me, "don't be a stranger" is sort of a like wanting to be friends with someone, but being too afraid to. Maybe the other person is very emotionally direct and honest, and I am just not capable of it at the time. Or maybe, it's the other way around, and they're not comfortable with parts of me, but I like them and don't want them gone. Sometimes, it's also about wanting connections in life, but just not even having the energy due to being too depressed, tired and burnt out with life. It really feels like it's like a cry for help type of phrase. A desperate extending of your hand to someone, yearning for their affection or friendship, and secretly hoping they'll somehow magically understand what you don't have the guts to tell them directly. Sigh :(
I’ve always seen this song as returning to a place you used to love weather it’s an old town or school or whatever. Being excited to see and reconnect with all your old friends again but slowly realizing time has moved on and those are no longer the same people you became friends with back when. “Don’t be a stranger” of course is the last thing that is said in the song just like it’s the last thing said in any awkward conversation with someone you haven’t seen in a while that you have no intention on seeing in the future either. She crushed it with this song. This is easily one of my top 5 favorite songs of all time.
I LOVE ALL THESE INTERPRETATIONS THEY ARE ALL BEAUTIFUL.... THINKING ABOUT THE PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE OR THE SHOULDA COULDA WOULDAS.... IT'S SO HEARTBREAKING WHEN U HAVE TO BRING SOMETHING TO AN END WHATEVER IT MAY BE WHEN YOU LOVE IT SO MUCH ....BUT IT SHOWS THAT YOU HAVE TREMENDOUS STRENGTH GOD BLESS YOU ALL!!❤❤❤
Once again Phoebe comes off as cool and elegant; so vulnerable but every lyric is so private. I have high hopes for her next album. Thank you for gifting us with your haunting beautiful lingering voice Phoebe. Magnificent instrumental work as well guys!
punisher was unfortunately extremely disappointing and a huge departure from everything shes done up til this point but at least stranger in the alps is still timeless
Everything about this is stunning , the camera angles, the outfits , the beautiful musicians, the background, the song , the lyrics , the mixing, the emotion. It's all perfect .
When she says " do you feel ashamed when you hear my name " ? Then turns and looks at the drummer.... watching his face tells the whole story. It made me jealous and also not feel alone in being that hurt.
Jesus _Christ_ , Phoebe's voice is just the kind of voice that is entirely haunting, with or without the reverb - it reverberates in your damn *soul* . It makes me want to start sobbing every time. So irrefutably beautiful. Damn.
An incredibly beautiful version of this song of hers...I especially love how she gives off brief smiles during certain lines...Struggle or despair in life is not always something that keeps you down...You learn from it & laugh about it & smile about it later on.
no it's not - Marshall came up with the song and Phoebe helped him finish it. He wrote it about a past shitty relationship with someone who is not Phoebe, they both talk about it on Song Exploder.
Listening to this while thinking about my coworker who left a few days ago to work abroad. He is probably the best coworker I’ll ever have. And i think there’s a few people who will agree with me when i say it’s a rare thing to have a work bestie on your first job. I told him am gonna visit him one day and we promised we will keep in touch. And I really hope we don’t become strangers. Ali Bin Afif. I will miss you so much and i wish you all the best in your future endeavors.❤️
How is this so freaking beautiful 😭😭😭😭😭 ohmygodddd ...my ears have been blessed Every single live studio rendition of this song has its own charm .. absolutely love the violin and guitars in this one !!
Man, this gave me shivers all over and brought a tear to me. The nostalgic and "lost love" sound this gives off is just incredible, almost tangible. Have only got into Phoebe in the past week or so. The backing vocals towards the end remind me of the vocals in the chorus of Goodbye Horses by Q Lazzarus
Just moved to Toronto from San Francisco in the middle of a pandemic and a lockdown. Damn! Re-listening to this just takes me back to driving through those redwoods to my ex-girlfriend. 'Anyway, Don't be a stranger!' That's exactly how I feel quarantining for two whole bloody months by myself.
I’ve listened to this several times but never realized that she changed the lyrics for “they’re all getting married” to “they’re all having babies” and it caught me so off guard. Anyone else? Lol
Saw her live in Seattle a couple weeks ago, one of the best performances I’ve ever witnessed❤️ I love her so much and I can’t wait until she releases another album!
She's friends with conor oberst, and he's known for changing his lyrics after the release of albums and touring certain songs for awhile. Could partially be due to his influence as well.
Probably because she, at the time when singing this version was thinking just that...How all those people are having babies...I get the feeling that it annoys her, just like everybody getting married does.
The song is about Marshall Vore (the drummer, they used to date). Vore was in one of Ryan Adams' bands (he went through many...) and when that group ended, it was due to, at least ostensibly, many of the members getting married and having (or getting ready to have) babies. I'd bet she went back and forth on the line when writing it as either works...just my guess
Lyrics: Walking Scott Street, feeling like a stranger With an open heart, open container I've got a stack of mail and a tall can It's a shower beer it's a payment plan There's helicopters over my head Every night when I go to bed Spending money and I earned it When I'm lonely, that's when I'll burn it Do you feel ashamed When you hear my name I asked you "How is your sister? I heard she got her degree" And I said, "That makes me feel old" He said, "What does that make me?" I asked you "How is playing drums?" You said it's too much shit to carry "And what about the band?" You said they're all getting married Do you feel ashamed When you hear my name Anyway, don't be a stranger Anyway, don't be a stranger Don't be a stranger
Jesus Christ!! What a wonderful song and video Phoebe! I am delighted to see your music and style are unique. One day I will go to the USA to see you in a concert. It will be one of the best days of my whole life, for sure 💓
This song feels like when you almost had a good day.
Accurate
jjsupremeorta15 from experience I can confirm you’re correct
😂

yeah
i love watching marshall harmonize lyrics that are about him
IC what U re doing here
wait what do you mean
What do YOU mean? The song is about him...
@Kayla Buss this song in particular is actually about Marshall, her drummer. Pretty sure he co-wrote too.
and smoke signals too
I love that she and Marshall can perform this song together.
Honestly this is her most underrated and underplayed song
lol Stranger in the Alps is a fantastic, critically acclaimed album. Your opinion is wrong. Also there are loads and loads of fantastic bands around today "made of real musicians", youre just too blind to see them because youre stuck in the past.
There were shit acts pre 2000 too just like there are fantastic acts post 2000.
hahhahha that's going on reddit i love copypastas
Your stance that technical complexity equals quality is wrong

Nick Slye update: Punisher is the best album of 2020
punisher was unfortunately extremely disappointing and a huge departure from everything shes done up til this point but at least stranger in the alps is still timeless
@@god47398 You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about..
@@god47398 punisher is so much better
Kick me in the face, Phoebe.
Alex hahahaha
She probably will lol
Kkkkkkkkkk
r u the same person who practically begged her to beat you up in the comment section of her funeral video? If so, I want to be you.
I second this lol

forever swooning over her. SHES JUST SO BEAUTIFUL. I saw her in SF just a week or two ago and I died. She was incredible live.
Jesus _Christ_ , Phoebe's voice is just the kind of voice that is entirely haunting, with or without the reverb - it reverberates in your damn *soul* .
It makes me want to start sobbing every time. So irrefutably beautiful. Damn.
I read that first part the same way she sings it in "Funeral"... 😂
She's been my favourite artist for almost a year now, with absolutely no sign of it stopping. I love Phoebe Bridgers. Fact.
Do you still love her?
I love that little smile at "said it's too much shit to carry"
I cry to this song often.
she will forever be one of the greatest
Anyway....don't be a stranger.
A Brilliant line for a beautiful song.
An incredibly beautiful version of this song of hers...I especially love how she gives off brief smiles during certain lines...Struggle or despair in life is not always something that keeps you down...You learn from it & laugh about it & smile about it later on.
This here. This is where I met my current favorite artist. Forever grateful for her existence.
This song is about the relationship lost between her and the drummer. Adds a whole new element to this video.
no it's not - Marshall came up with the song and Phoebe helped him finish it. He wrote it about a past shitty relationship with someone who is not Phoebe, they both talk about it on Song Exploder.
I love when TH-cam ads finally come through and show me a gem like this song.
Phoebe Bridgers is a musical goddess
Listening to this while thinking about my coworker who left a few days ago to work abroad. He is probably the best coworker I’ll ever have. BECAUSE OMG !!!! SING GIRL !!!!
Thank you so much TH-cam Ad ♥
thats how i found out about this
Me too
Blog Lindona, only time I've been grateful for a TH-cam ad.
All I seen was the name Pheobe and a haunting melody, and the search was on!
Same???
when she turns around to Marshall and the drums come in, but it's also the buildup to my favorite, poignant yet heartbreaking line in the whole song 😭
Man, this gave me shivers all over and brought a tear to me. The nostalgic and "lost love" sound this gives off is just incredible, almost tangible. Have only got into Phoebe in the past week or so.

PHOEBE BRIDGERS your voice is harmony and your words speak to the heart☺🎶💕 loving you already ☺🎶💕thank you VEVO DSCVR
Ugh. She never fails to make me feel something. Pure brilliance.
oh phoebes, always making me cry!
Just moved to Toronto from San Francisco in the middle of a pandemic and a lockdown. Damn! Re-listening to this just takes me back to driving through those redwoods to my ex-girlfriend. 'Anyway, Don't be a stranger!' That's exactly how I feel quarantining for two whole bloody months by myself.
the outro gets me every time
Boy oh boy can this girl sing. Exceptional
I go hard to stranger in the alps

Violin + Phoebe = gorgeous melody with a dreamy quality.
I’ve listened to this several times but never realized that she changed the lyrics for “they’re all getting married” to “they’re all having babies” and it caught me so off guard. Anyone else? Lol
Same Omds I was like wait there not the lyrixs
Remains the greatest upload to TH-cam ever
Saw her live in Seattle a couple weeks ago, one of the best performances I’ve ever witnessed❤️ I love her so much and I can’t wait until she releases another album!
Beautiful, classy, poetic, inspiring… ❤❤❤
this makes me feel so calm. what a beautiful voice filled with so much peace, not to forget the relaxing instruments. love it, thank you youtube ad!
mesmerising, entrancing, phenomenal. my favourite live performance of hers.
Very nice, i like how she changed "they're all getting married" to "having babies", wonder why though
Probably because in the time since the song was written, they're already married and are now having kids.
She's friends with conor oberst, and he's known for changing his lyrics after the release of albums and touring certain songs for awhile. Could partially be due to his influence as well.
probably cause at the time it was written they were all getting married and now when she performs it they’re all having babies? seems kinda obvious
Probably because she, at the time when singing this version was thinking just that...How all those people are having babies...I get the feeling that it annoys her, just like everybody getting married does.

Absolutely gorgeous. Both her and the song.
The electric guitar on this version is stunningly beautiful.
For the first time, thank you, Vevo.
SHE IS SUCH A TALENTED DOLL! 🖤
I've found new hope for today's music.
Perfect harmonies. *Sigh*
her voice calms me down so much
Oh wow, how beautiful and sensible this is. This is an amazing piece of art, in all the ways. Loved it 😍
she's so freakin beautiful and talented... HOW aghhhh
Lyrics:
Walking Scott Street, feeling like a stranger
With an open heart, open container
I've got a stack of mail and a tall can
It's a shower beer it's a payment plan
There's helicopters over my head
Every night when I go to bed
Spending money and I earned it
When I'm lonely, that's when I'll burn it
Do you feel ashamed
When you hear my name
I asked you "How is your sister?
I heard she got her degree"
And I said, "That makes me feel old"
He said, "What does that make me?"
I asked you "How is playing drums?"
You said it's too much shit to carry
"And what about the band?"
You said they're all getting married
Do you feel ashamed
When you hear my name
Anyway, don't be a stranger
Anyway, don't be a stranger
Don't be a stranger
She modified the lyrics to "they're all having babies" nice improvisation.
amazing just amazing i have no words of how amazing this is
Most beautiful song I've heard this year!
Jesus Christ!! What a wonderful song and video Phoebe! I am delighted to see your music and style are unique. One day I will go to the USA to see you in a concert. It will be one of the best days of my whole life, for sure 💓

And after listening to your ghost album 1 and a half times today and seeing this video my brand new crush.......
I hope it was Phebe Bridgers who liked that......whoever it was don't comment and I'll just believe! And if it was Pheobe don't comment and I'll know
I wish Phoebe and Marshall happiness.
Beautiful
