- Ethel Cain - Thoroughfare - Live Performance | Vevo DSCVR Artists To Watch 2023
If you want emotional depth and sweeping grandeur from rock music, seek out Ethel Cain’s ‘Preacher’s Daughter.’ The singer-guitarist’s debut album crackles from the jump. “American Teenager” is a portrait of small towns where football, Jesus, and “putting too much faith in the make believe” are important, and the artsy outsiders are relegated to the bleachers. But Cain, who also goes by Hayden Silas Anhedönia, is the main character here. The scope of this ambitious songwriting further widens when the “Baba O’Riley”-tinged “American Teenager” transitions into “A House In Nebraska.” For nearly three minutes, only spine-tingling piano chords slice through the echo of her gritty voice. Sparse. Raw. Powerful. The Joanna Newsome disciple credits this moment as a euphoric breakthrough that lit the path to the entire project. Her ‘Inbred’ EP was famously assembled in a church basement. And although ‘Preacher’s Daughter’ was crafted more meticulously, a subversive religious zeal haunts “Nebraska” and several of its other tracks. Some outlets have uttered “pop” as a descriptor for Cain’s work, but don’t be surprised at the music’s moments of challenging dissonance, a la Sonic Youth. Recent media champions include Pitchfork, Paper Magazine, and the New York Times, whose profile charted the Tallahassee born singer’s complex relationship with her Southern Baptist heritage, as well as her affinity for small town life (these days she resides in Alabama, purchasing a pickup truck with her record-deal money). Hand-drawn tattoos dot her hairline as well as the rest of her body; earlier this year, Cain made public her trans identity. This artistry is a reminder not to judge a book by a cover. In fact, just skip the judgements entirely. The singer told us she’s excited for fans to hear her ATW 2023 performances “in a way they haven’t heard before on the record.” All that’s left to do is turn the speaker up and listen.

“Cus for the first time since I was a child, I could see a man who wasn’t angry” - that part is so heartbreaking when you know what happens next

"Harmonica queen" *i whisper to myself as I rewatch this video for the millionth time in a row bc I live and breathe for this lady*
ALBUM OF THE YEAR AND NO ONE CAN TOP IT!
Ethel Cain is a genius!!
1000% agreed!!!
I expected far less than she delivered. Thought it'd be a song pack but it was the best music to date!
preachers daughter best album 2022
I have to say both Ethel Cain and Ren are my two new favorites. They're both tied for being so creative and talented.
Album of the common era
Sometimes while listening to preacher’s daughter I think “Wait, she produced and wrote this all by herself”. Woah. Btw this performance is beautiful
Whosoever was in charge of art direction and cinematography deserve an oscar & an emmy
for real 😍😍😍😍😍
nobody was in charge. and i think that is the beauty 🤭

how do you capture a whole movie in a song? legend
She’s a master storyteller 🥺
omg it's you
Your comments are the most stable things in my life
i miss you
WE MISS YOUUU
STAY AWAY FROM HER
I find an immediate connection to Ethel Cain since I started listening to her. For me, a trans girl who had a religious upbringing like hers for much of my life, it's revolutionary that her sound is gospel pop. I once again find delight in a sound that in one way or another accompanied me. Thank you for this magic doll. xo
same! i'm a trans man who grew up southern baptist and i relate to her music so much
Same as a trans woman
Just casually smashing that harmonica perfectly like it’s easy
I’m not crying but tears are coming out of my face rapidly
She has a Mazzy Star feel to her music. Incredible storytelling! I’m hanging on every word.
exactly!!! i’m pulled right in

It’s the production
Her voice in the lower registers give some serious goosebumps--- wow! Supremely great performance and production!! Kudos Vevo! Look out world, Ethel is going to take over!
She’s so underrated preacher’s daughter is for me the best album of 2022
I'll never get tired of listening to mother cain
falling down the rabbit hole of ethel cain through this album has really started a whole new journey for me in ways i cannot begin to explain. SINCERELY THANK YOU
Love how she changed the lyrics while smiling, no more “loves never meant much to me”
I was wondering why she changed it!!!
@@beatriz5940 She said that it's the original lyrics and she does gets confused occasionally and sings the old lyrics instead lol
What are the other lyrics? That’s all I’ve ever heard?
@@sophiem8451Here she sings "sounds like a fine old plan to me"
The other lyrics are "love's never meant much to me" @@sophiem8451
god the lyric change to "sounds like a final plan to me" is so intense. her mind
mama, i don’t know if you’ll see this - but preacher’s daughter genuinely changed my life in a way that so few albums have. so proud of all the success you’ve found this year, and so happy to have found you. thank you for sharing your beautiful music with us.
i fell in love with this album immediately after hearing it, this song has such a chokehold on me
this is actually so stunning ❤ i love when meemaw busts out the harmonica
LMFAOOOO
MEEMAWWWWW 💀
Mother is mothering so fiercely.
Song goes so hard no one noticed the drummer's shirt is inside out
It has a logo on it likely. I dont think anyone cared.
this is the type of music that moves people
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This is the type of music that matters.
You are a witch. The drop with distortion at the end takes my soul, and you can have it. Well done!
A true experimental odyssey into the fatigue, lose, despair, sadness, joy and much more .Preacher's daughter is a love letter too the chaose of youth and exfundie youth in mourning.
She is wrestling with herself and the world in every song so beautiful
she’s an icon, she’s a legend, and she IS the moment…… i mean cmon now. look at the material
Gorl New York would love Ethel
CAUSE LOVES OUT THERE AND I CANT LEAVE IT BE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please release a vinyl for this album. This is truly one of the greatest albums I've ever listened to
go retweet her tweet about the vinyl
Can’t wait for a live performance of either Ptolemaea or Sun Bleached Flies.
Ptolemaea live would def break the last seal of the apocalypse
NEED PTOLEMAEA SCREAM LIVE RN
and also family tree
how do you even perform ptolemaea live lmao. we really need it
@@wisteriaaaaa she would never do the scream live, it would break her voice lmao
I saw her singing this live with Florence Welch in Lisbon 🧡
the visual on top of the song is incredible.
A wonderful woman with a wonderful voice. there is nothing more to say. 🎸
She has a very mature voice
@@dianahartung5989 Yes, the voice is really striking. She was born as a boy.
@@s.i.c.666 tbf I don't think her voice gives away the fact that she's trans at all
@@komiago2149 yes it doesn't. I was surprised to hear that she was trans. Also she's so stunning aswell.
@@dianahartung5989 i was so shocked to hear she was exactly one year older than I am. I would've expected this voice to come up from a veteran singer in her 40s.
You fell in love with America when you were 12 years old
And by 17 you knew you had to see it all
You loved your dad and the love he had for your mother so
You had to get out and go chasin' it's sweet call
[Verse 2]
I met you there in Texas somewhere on the thoroughfare
On the side of the road in some torn up clothes with a pistol in my pocket
I didn’t trust no one but you said "Baby, don’t run, I’ll take you anywhere"
So I hopped right in, outta luck to spend, and at least your truck beats walking
[Chorus]
And you said "Hey, do you wanna see the west with me?
Cause lovе's out there and I can’t leavе it be"
And I said "Honey, love's never meant much to me
But I'll come with you if you're sure it's what you need"
[Verse 3]
So we made off for California to find your lover, driving day and night
And every small town diner saw our faces at least once or twice
But in these motel rooms, I started to see you differently
Cause for the first time since I was a child, I could see a man who wasn’t angry
[Verse 4]
And he said “It's been a long damn time since I left Florida, no one left to leave, no one left to love
But now that I met you, I finally know just where I’m headin'”
And we found heaven in time where your western sunshine met my deep southern wet
And you got lost in it and yet you found yourself hard pressed for air and sweatin'
[Chorus]
And you said "Hey, do you wanna see the west with me?
(Do you wanna see the west with me?)
Cause love's out there and I can’t leave it be"
(I can’t leave it, I can’t leave it)
And I said "Honey, love's never meant that much to me
(Nothing much)
But I'll come with you if you're sure it's what you need"
[Bridge]
Once we reached the coast you said "End of the line, we finally hit the edge, after all this time
I didn't find my love but I still made it this far without it"
But then you turned to me and stared into me deep and said "But maybe not, cause look at what I've got
You might not be my love, but, baby, I doubt it"
[Chorus]
And you said "Hey, do you wanna see the west with me?
Cause love's out there and I can’t leave it be"
And I said "Honey, love's never meant much to me
But I'll come with you if you're sure it's what you need"
[Outro]
Cause in your pickup truck with all of your dumb luck is the only place I think I’d ever wanna be
thanks
That a voice! Подписался.
everytime she looks at cam and smiles i get giddy wtffff

Your music is heaven, I'm so glad I discovered it!
Ethel Cains voice travels from my blood through goosebumps into the air and makes me feel at one in the moment. I am so glad I found her 😭
No words...Beautiful.♥
And I said hunny, love’s never meant much to me 😩
forever my love, the fact that bones and all and preachers daughter came out on the same year 👀❤
And that she wrote a song after watching it because she couldn't get it out of her head.
Just imagine sounding even better live than in your already amazing recordings, my god, I love this woman so much
literally I am addicted to this version, for the last couple of days I couldn't stopppp listening. Thank you mother cain for this work of a r t⚡
the storytelling in this album is actually unmatched.
the first ethel cain song i heard and my fav song on preacher's daughter 🖤
Can''t believe I can just go on youtube and watch this, no need to pay or anything + her smile at the end is my favourite thing ever from now on

downright iconic
Ethel, thank you so much. For a long time I wasn’t able to feel the joy of discovering a new artist that I truly liked. It all changed when I saw you on my Spotify.
