At my darkest moments, this provided me so much comfort. When you're down there, you don't want a friend to pull you out, you need a friend to wallow with you.
between fjm and j. tillman u've written so much incredible music , i can't fathom how a single human can produce such intricate art in such little time
I loved pure comedy, I think it’s really an underrated album and that people don’t like it just cause it’s “boohoo too political wah”. To me way its way more of a fun ride that honeybear (which I still like). Obviously no one disputes fear fun being good or not cause it’s great. But ya, I’m liking this new album so far ;)
Miguel Benavidez I’m glad you say so! It’s just I often see or hear people hating on it or at least implying it’s just an “ok” album. I think it’s a near masterpiece though :)
Well to me Pure Comedy was way too long and way too simplistic. It sounded to me like the reason the whole thing minus a few bridges were composed on piano were to make it cheaper and easier to perform. With Father John Misty I expect loud, bombastic, pretty, 80s sounding pop ballads. Not a quiet piano with an even quieter voice underneath. That being said I still love the title track and Total Entertainment Forever made it onto my indie playlist. God’s Favourite Customer on the other hand is my #2 album of the year so far, right behind Yesterday Was Forever by Kate Nash. It’s what you expect, Peter Frampton-esk pop ballads cleverly written with a dark sarcasm and nihilism outrageous social satire, and unique melodies, that all flow together in a cohesive whole.
Iain Ronald Eh, to each his own. I think sometimes less is more, and FJM can’t just make the same pop-ballad albums all the time or it would get boring. Pure Comedy to me was still dark, funny and smart but also touching and sentimental and I really like that in an album. “Magic Mountain” specifically is an absolute masterpiece
I figured I would like this song going into it. Then 40 seconds passed. Yeah, let's just say I paused the video and cried out with joy. This song is MMMM OH YEAH
Got my CD pre-ordered and a new t-shirt. TTIF. Thank Tillman it's Friday. Ps- FJM, remember your intimate show in Sonoma, CA in 1/15? I sure do... will ride the roller coaster with you until we all grow old on Magic Mountain.
[Verse 1] Sun is rising Black is turning blue Look out, buddy, Noah's calling Jesus, man, what did you do? [Verse 2] Psychic terrorists In the upper room Left foot, right foot, that's the ticket You'll be back on top real soon [Pre-Chorus] Whose bright idea was it to sharpen the knives? Just twenty minutes 'fore the boat capsize If you want an answer, it's anybody's guess I'm treading water as I bleed to death Oh, oh, oh [Chorus] What's your politics? What's your religion? What's your intake? Your reason for living? [Verse 3] Your compositions A start of every song Find you waking in the morning Always there to greet the dawn [Verse 4] Trouble sleeping My alarm goes off So you wanna hang out at the gallows? Those guys get an early start [Pre-Chorus] Oh, whose bright idea was it to sharpen the knives? Just twenty minutes 'fore the boat capsize If you want an answer, it's anybody's guess I'm treading water as I bleed to death Oh, oh, oh [Chorus] What's your politics? What's your religion? What's your intake? Your reason for living? Oh, oh what's your politics? What's your religion? What's your intake? Your reason for living?
Oooh... just caught your reference to the Upper Room. Brilliant FJM. Your parents forcing their religious beliefs upon you as a child seems to have seeped into your psyche as did my parents force feeding me their Pentecostal mumbles. God help us both. And all.
At my darkest moments, this provided me so much comfort. When you're down there, you don't want a friend to pull you out, you need a friend to wallow with you.
I've just heard this for the first time. And the first comment, your comment, slaps me harder than you know. Or actually you probably do
Best song on the album hands down.
I love the album, but it's honestly not even close. This is the clear standout track.
"Just Dumb Enough to Try" comes close.
True
Adel ECDW ommmg yes
I agree, this track works so well.
This song is amazing! Played this in my headphones while on a walk in the woods and danced along the creek and felt restored as a human being.
It’s almost like a lost Beatles track 😞 so so good 🤘🏻
This was a rabbit hole i needed to fall down today.
pays off to surf youtube late at night. this album is going to be the album of the summer
