Vieux Carré: A Classic from New Orleans | How to Drink

  • Get Ready for Mardi Gras with this essential New Orleans Classic. Laissez les bons temps rouler!
Vieux Carré directly translates to "Old Square" or "Old Quarter" and it is the French name for the French Quarter of New Orleans. This drink is an absolute classic and as closely linked to New Orleans as the Sazerac, Bananas Foster, or Étouffée. As far as I know it was invented at the famous Carousel Bar at the Hotel Montelone sometime around the 1930's. I'd actually never had it before this episode, and it was fun for me to "discover" it. Sort of reminds me of a cross between a Sazerac and a Manhattan actually, good stuff!
    Vieux Carré
    • 2 Dashes Peychaud's Bitters
    • 2 Dashes Angostura Bitters
    • Barspoon Bénédictine
    • .75 oz. or 22 ml. Rye
    • .75 oz. or 22 ml. Cognac
    • .75 oz. or 22 ml. Sweet Vermouth (I used Antica here)
    • Stir over ice
    • Strain over a big cube
    • Garnish with lemon twist

Hi greg Just wanted to ask if you had any thoughts on my message recently. I’m from the Uk and wanted to know if you ever thought of publishing your own book and having it in sections and also that I’ve found that some of the videos or mixed into the wrong category for example drinks that don’t have whisky in them are in the whisky category? Cheers and keep it up please. Love your work

You made an interesting point about going to New Orleans when it was dead. I think it's part of the magic of the place seeing what is normally just an old dead city come alive during Mardi Gras (and other festivals); I think it really fits with all of the voodoo, zombie and vampire themes that abound.

Hey Greg! Great Episode! Can you please do a special on Frasier and his drink Sherry? Also I'd love another Soda Jerk episode! Lots of love man. I sympathize with the mustache hairs as well...

Finally Greg! I've been waiting for this one! Do the Widow's Kiss next!
I had a Bartender spritz absinthe on this drink one time and that was very special.

Crazy mustache hair into nose is just part of the fun. You looked like Miguel from Road to El Dorado hunched over that uke.

You got those Riedel rocks glasses, really nice. I just got a set of 2 and ordered the neat versions, the small ones, but they sent me 4 rocks glasses. Anyway nice glasses. They had a sale on them so got these, the Nick and Nora and the sour glasses. Really worth the money. Look and feel are superb.

I change the full cognac portion with 1/2 cognac and 1/2 grand marnier (brandy based) and it tastes amazing.

I went to N.O. the week after Mardi Gras. It was like one big hangover. People still partied but their heart wasn't that into it.

P.S. for once you didn't butcher the pronunciation of the words. That's called progress.
