Thank you for watching! 💗 Check out also the 5 crochet tips that are most important for me - they could be for you also! th-cam.com/video/tbWfp7ZgS7s/w-d-xo.html
Hi, Tuula Maaria. Well I am a man who found crochet late in life. As a widower and 64, I have been crocheting for 4 years, yes and still learning. Will we ever stop?. I hope not. So, your tips, they are so spot on and usable. I have experienced some of them. I really enjoy your openess and honesty. It makes me want to visit your beautifull country. 😍, anyway, I'm so glad I found your Chanel. See you on the tube 🙂 🙏.
You are an inspiration! I wish more men would get to enjoy this art ! Fun fact during the potato famine in Ireland, it was Edwardian period , fancy lace . The schools stopped , the town would meet and the family , men , women, children (possibly a smart dog or cat lol ) would learn to crochet for money …. Enjoy !!!
@kimberlyredd3151 Hi,Kimberly Reiid, thank you for the kind words and some history. Did you know way back in England d, (I don't know about other countrys) but in England at that time Women weren't allowed to knit, only the men, they had a knitting guild kind of like a union. Women was allowed to spin yarn and other yarn jobs. Can you imagine if they tried that today? Omg lol. 😲 have a great day.
Lovely surroundings Tuula ❣️ what is the temperature there?. I crochet in an electric recliner with the armrest on the left and a pillow under my arm on the right while watching tv and following the TH-cam video tutorial too.
The second tip is extremely important. Very beautiful places! I just decided yesterday to finish the 2 projects that I have and to give all the extra leftovers to a thrift store.
Great tips here. I'm guilty of the shoulder raise and have been making a conscious effort to relax them. My biggest "problem" is my yarn stash. I've taken steps to reduce it recently by donating many skeins to charity, but even if I live to be as old as Methuselah, I'll still have yarn left over, lol.
Thank you! I think I'm the same, I have given away yarn but there's lots left! However, not as much as this lady that recently passed away in my town. Her relatives sold her stash, about 1300 full balls or skeins of yarn and lots of WIPs!
Definitely the relaxing shoulders and hands and taking breaks. I totally got carried away with a project recently and am suffering for it. A lesson learned, and it's good to be reminded.. thank you for another excellent video and the beautiful Finnish background.
In 1960 I was in the 5th grade in grammar school in The Bronx, NY. A new student was student introduced to our class who’s family had just come to the UNITED STATES from Finland. The teacher (Mrs. Frankel) assigned her seat next to me and allowed us to to talk to each other a little during class hours. We became very good friends. Her name is Gun-Britt Forsman. Her little sister’s name is Lisalot ( my spelling is probably incorrect). Her stories about Findland were awesome and some astonishing for a 12 year old. Unfortunately, we lost track of each other as time went by, but I remember her and her family well.
Thank you for sharing, lovely that you got to know a Finnish girl then! The names sound like from the Swedish-speaking side of Finland (we have 2 official languages, Finnish and Swedish). Maybe you will find her on Facebook, I have found many old acquaintances there!
I love your videos! Just learned to crochet at age 66. And it is so true, gradually move from easy patterns to more challenging ones. I started on scarves, blankets, and cowls, then graduated to hats, mittens, and various small objects. Now I crochet cardigans, sweaters, and amigurumi.
@@TuulaMaaria I learned to crochet in my early 20s but life got in the way and I wasn't able to do it for years. But I continued to collect scrap yarn to store to use "when I get the time". I know that my children don't want crocheted things and I don't have grandchildren so now I use the yarn to make things to give to charities that give to the local community. Scarves, all sizes afghans, toys, etc
I say this as a musician. I find this useful for any time that I use my hands a great deal: I warm up my hands by putting them on a heating pad for ten minutes per hand at a medium heat. Or by soaking them in very warm water. Then I do flexibility hand exercises. It helps relax my hands and keeps them limber. You can Google and find hand exercises for crochet and knitters. Just don't do any exercise that hurts. Always be gentle with yourself. I also take breaks. I get up and walk around for a few minutes. And I stretch my body a bit.
All sound advice! I think yarn hoarding is my bad habit too lol! The trouble is, I can't resist/say no when people are kind enough to offer me more, or I find a real bargain!😁 Thanks for another great video x
It's the real bargains that get me too. I usually buy online because I am house bound. But sometimes on the way home from seeing the doctor, if I feel strong enough, I will stop to look at the yarn. Now, I have to tell you, if you have ever shopped online and paid all those shipping fees on your yarn any yarn that I see in the store with no shipping fees is a GREAT BARGAIN to me so now it's even harder to resist buying up a bunch!! LOL😊
First of all thank you for the wonderful tour. I love your tips, they are sensible, informative and very helpful. Your advice on starting projects early, is one I do all the time. I’ve just finished crocheting Pebbles, Bambam and Dino from the Flintstones. I need to make a car like the one in the cartoon. In preparation to enter in our local agricultural show craft section, in March 2024. Once again thank you for another amazing video.👏👏🇦🇺
Good video tips, I've learnt by watching TH-cam so haven't had anyone to help in this way & I'm guilty of slouching and not sitting up straight. I have bought a lot of yarn in last few years whilst starting to learn & decided not to buy any more this year (up to now I haven't) and will have to try to crochet bit more often, maybe I'll have to start doing smaller things again to use it up quicker. I liked looking around where you're filming too, it's nice to see another country as if was there.
Thank you! Lots of people learn by watching TH-cam, it's a great way nowadays. Didn't exist when was learning 😊 This is a lovely area, I like to show it off without making actual travel videos!
This is very helpful information, thank you! Your filming locations are lovely. 5:42 - 5:55 I've become more mindful about the amount of tension in my shoulders, neck, and hands while I crochet. I stretch my hands after every so many rows or minutes, as well as my shoulders. My favorite shoulder stretch is to bring them as far up to my ears as I can, like an exaggerated shrug, hold for a count of 10, then fully relax them; I repeat this 2 or 3 times, with a count of 10 in between each repeat. Very soothing. Progressive Muscle Relaxation techniques are very helpful for me. I also like to listen to music while I crochet, either on CD (I still have many old favorites) or on a digital playlist. Either of these can be useful timers. I'll tell myself that when such-and-such song starts playing, usually the 4th or 5th song from when I start the "countdown," it's time to stretch; the song is recognizable, and not so much time has passed that I forget; 4 or 5 songs in a row usually total close to 15 minutes. I'm guilty of poor postures similar to your examples, and it's nice to see I'm not alone. 😂 I'm becoming more mindful of this, as well, and I do pay more attention to my position after each stretch session.
Thank you for sharing! The tip about listening to music and stretching at certain points of a playlist is a great one! 👍 You are definitely not alone about any of the things I listed!
Just found you today! You are so sweet and thank you for letting me know I am Not the only one who buys yarn without knowing what I will do with it yet. I was convinced I was the only one doing that and I felt so guilty! Now I control that much better but when I fail I don’t feel bad about it anymore. I just laugh and recognize that I just had another “love at first sight” moment! Wow and you are Finnish! Lovely! You now have another Canadian subscriber!
Thank you for subscribing, glad you found me! Oh yes, don't feel guilty, there are so many people like us as far as buying yarn goes! I have heard it said that buying yarn is a completely separate hobby from knitting and crochet 😄
I am a yarn hoarder. But sometimes I am really happy about it when I need not buy anything after just finding the perfect yarn in my treasures I didn’t even remember that I had it. As to not finishing socks and the like: My mother taught me to always make two similar things at the same time. So first sock up to the heel (or the next colour), then start the next sock, make the heel, make the heel on the next sock etc. The same is true for sleeves etc, knit/crochet up to where you need to increase/decrease… This works for me.
True, that would be one way to keep up, making two at the same time! Many people knit two socks at one go using the looping method, on a long circular needle. I have never been organised enough to do that!
This is good advice, thank your mom! I'm trying to finish mittens, gloves, and beanie's for all my grandkids and I get too many projects going at the same time. I'm trying this method on some mittens and it feels more productive so far.
One thing I try to avoid as much as possible are projects I don't really enjoy making. However much I love crocheting, there's always a stitch, a type of yarn, or even colours I somehow dislike, and after a few rows it just doesn't feel like fun but rather like a chore. My mistake when looking for a new project to start is to show friends and family pictures (because I need patterns, it's hard to design things myself!) and ask them which one they would like. Recently my friend chose a cardigan with a nice looking shell stitch but that for some unknown reason I've begun to almost hate. I'm finishing the cardigan because she likes it so much and I like her, but lesson learned for the next time: go over the patterns, make a swatch and only let them choose among those I know I'll enjoy! (Reason number XYZ why I should start swatching, which I hate!)
That's a very good tip, you are definitely right! I know I have made things I didn't enjoy, mostly because of colour,I only like strong or bright colours and white. - You might learn to like swatching, I have always loved it, so relaxing!
Thanks, y'all. I've never made one single swatch but I've never been interested in making apparel (it's beginning to appeal to me though). However, this is a good idea for when I'm between projects that I really hadn't considered. Currently between & making snowflakes for Christmas tree & decorative garland.
I am guilty of buying yarn without a project in mind to use it so it goes into my stash I also crochet sat in the same position for long periods and my shoulders ache Lovely tips and beautiful surroundings ❤️
Thank you for sharing your beautiful surroundings. Your advice is very true, especially about the type of yarn that is too fluffy to frog 😩 Since you had the poll about stashing, I went and sorted my yarn and actually rediscovered what I have, and possible combinations. That inspired me to start on projects that I was long putting off, just because I wasn't sure if I would have enough for what I wanted to crochet.
I am working on a new crochet pattern, and I find myself tensing up my shoulders and gripping the crochet hook too tightly while trying to learn the pattern. I don't intend to do that, but when I realize I am doing that, I do try to settle down. I so enjoy your videos. It looks so beautiful where you live. Thank you!
Great common sense tips!! I especially can relate to the tip of late gifts! Usually what i wind up doing is purchasing something and saving the unfinished gift for a birthday or even the following Christmas!🤭
What a good idea to combine tips with a walk in such beautiful surroundings! It was very enjoyable. Thanks for the reminders! I especially needed the one about lowering my shoulders. A mistake I made recently was having more than one project going at the same time. It introduced stress into my crocheting, especially since one project was a cardigan I promised to give someone.
Love your always insightful videos. You are a very charming person. Thank you for sharing your expertise in crochet, sharing your personality, your crochet tips, and your crochet stories from your crochet journey/history.
I've just put down my crochet for the night and my shoulders and right hand are sore! Extra tension due to a pattern that is too hard but I need to use up some of my Yarn stash that is ridiculous even though I've sold some extra balls on ebay and yes I was hunched over on my bed straining my eyes as I couldn't find my reading glasses that were under the pattern... 😏 Did I miss anything ah yes I'm starting a summer pattern for next year as I always start seasonal things to late. Brilliant tips / reminders /video thank you 💖
I most enjoyed your comment about having an abundance of yarn already but when you come across this yarn "you know you just can't live without" yet still not knowing what you will make with it but you just know it will be something GREAT... and you buy it because you have told yourself "I'M WORTH IT!! That's ME! If ever you find the way to resist the gorgeous yarn that has no purpose... let me know😊. My yarn has me almost moved out of my bedroom... I'm 5 skeins away from sleeping on my couch with my dog. LOL😅
Oh yes, some yarns we just HAVE to get 😀 I do hope you find other ways of storing yarn than sleeping on the couch! In my previous home I had too many kitchen cupboards and I ended up storing yarn in top cupboards, in closed containers!
As for yarn hoarding, I do the same with fabric. I’m a quilter and us quilters do the same thing. I have cut down a lot on my fabric by donating my scraps, but it’s hard to not buy new fabric.
I just found yarn for 60% off and bought a cart worth. I have projects in mind but it WILL take me years to finish everything on my list. As long as I still like the colors I’ll hang onto it.
I used to have a lot of fabric too and sew a lot. Now I sew rarely so recently I took a lot of fabric to a charoty shop, hopefully someone will need it!
loving your good advice, thank you, Tuula. In my 70's now, it's been a long trip to getting so many boxes FULL of left over wool, cottons, blended yarns and un-spun wool (I spin my own wool too). Over this past year, I've been able to talk myself out of buying lots of things that I feel 'inspired' to make (knit, sew, quilt, whatever) BECAUSE I KNOW that I won't get around to making them, either because I'm starting to really slow down now or my arthritis plays up too much and I can't do the work 🙄☹😞
I love seeing what you have shown us. I’m guilty of buying yarn, fabric and other project stuff without having a project in mind. I have been reducing my yarn stash as I will never use it all up.
I just found your channel and I love it. When I was a very young woman, I told both my mother and her sister I would never have their stashes of yarn. They each told me it was genetic and couldn't be helped. They were right.
Thank you, Tuula! I am 74 and just beginning my crochet adventure. It is such fun learning new things, and I have a lot to learn. One addition to your list of things not to do would be not to start another project before completing one. I am trying in August to learn and have projects ready for Christmas!! Even though I have some time I would suggest not to choosing a big project that will not be completed in time. I am already trying to complete several shawls with different stitches. l am loving learning, but now the pressure is on. I am doing everything you suggest NOT doing!!
Thank you for sharing, lovely that you have started to crochet at this time of your life! I would actually always have several projects on the go at the same time, both knitting and crochet. I find I need the variation. I normally have both ones that are quick to complete and then longer ones like a blanket. Enjoy crocheting your shawls, I love making shawls too!
I really like your simple, to the point and friendly videos, Tuula. I visited Finland in February this year as I am an opera singer and had a concert in Helsinkii. I loved my trip and had the opportunity to buy some Finnish yarn, which brings me to my “what not to do” item of the list 😅😅! I love buying yarn but never have a project for it, so my drawers are filled with yarns-in-waiting! I think I love the look and the feeling of yarns in my hands more than the actual process of crocheting and knitting 😂! Anyway, thank you for your channel - it always brings a smile to my face ❤
Thank you for sharing! Great that you visited Helsinki, I love it! Opera singer, that is interesting 😊Maybe you will soon get time to make something from the Finnish yarn you bought!
The tip I know I should be doing is the one about posture, I never notice while I'm crocheting but the next day I have bad shoulder and neck strain. I am also guilty of buying too much yarn. X K
I can so relate to all of your points! Especially the tension..I was crocheting this evening and found my shoulders round my ears I was so tense..it’s good for someone to remind you to relax..crochet is good for my mental health but I don’t want it damaging my physical health! Thank you so much for sharing your videos, you are so calm and your voice is so gentle..love listening and watching you❤️
I wear an apple watch. It has a 'reminder' to stand. If I sit or am still for 2 hours, it reminds me to get up and walk around. That really helps me take breaks when my natural rhythm might keep me sitting for a very long period of time. For me it encourages me to change my position while crocheting, reading or watching television. It's especially good when I'm engrossed in an audiobook while I'm crocheting.
Sounds good! Many people seem to get help from those kinds of watches. So far I haven't got one, I'm too restless to stay anywhere for more than 15 minutes at a time 😄
So many good tips. I had to laugh about the gift bag. I have had so many good intentions about making certain gifts for birthdays or holidays, but so often, I don't get them done in time. I started working on Christmas gifts in June, but I've also had some birthdays to fit in. Because I don't have the finances to buy each person a gift, and because I have a fairly substantial yarn stash, I try to use what I have. I've recently started making amigurumi dolls for the children in my life(grandkids, nephews, nieces, etc). Some have been easier than others, but all of them have been challenging. Many have taken much longer than I estimated, such as a T-Rex I was making for my grand-nephew's birthday. I just finished it yesterday, but his birthday was last week😒. I've just recently discovered your channel, and I appreciate your calm, down to Earth style and presentation.
I will just put my work down and do my finger yoga . I have had both hands operation and am just more relaxed in holding my needle. I am in my 80s and also started as a child. Macrame, Tatting, crocheting, embroidery, lace, and knitting. Now, I only crochet as it's quicker to complete a piece of work. I sent items all over as I have relatives living in different cold countries. I have already started for next Christmas. Thanks for your tops most already know
I don't buy yarn without a plan, but I do buy for too many plans. Then I don't have enuf crochet time available. Too many ideas not enuf time, lol. It's getting better, a bit, as I'm retired now.
Hello there! I love your videos and your channel! I am guilty of all 5! 😮 I have gotten my crochet passion back, and there are SO many beautiful yarns, after 10 or more yrs away! I need to stop and use what i have! I will be 71 this Sept. so acquiring so much, best to keep it simple! 😊 Thank you, Tuula❤
What a beautiful Community thanks for sharing. I appreciate the sage advice as well. My trouble is that I always crochet too tightly my mother was forever telling me that loosen up loosen up I still struggle with it today I've met you at 3 that I have to consciously remind myself. Blessings and love
Their are time when I do tense up while crocheting, I really started back crocheting more since I retired but when the pandemic hit I stared ordering you and now at time it overwhelm some because it is to much. But I have to take my time because I have had surgery on my left wrist but I like crocheting so I come away from it when I am in pain
My most comfortable position to sit whilst crocheting/ knitting is to place my large home made cushion (stuffed with fabric scraps) on the floor next to my bed. I use the side of the bed & mattress to lean my back on & stretch out my legs. It totally supports my back & neck & my entire body is relaxed.
Great tips! My issue is #4.... suddenly deciding to crochet something just before it's due! Currently I'm crocheting a set of a baby teddy bear blanket, cardigan, beanie & booties for my soon to be great nephew! He's due in a few days & I still have the beanie & booties to crochet! I think I can, I think I can...!! LOL! 🥰Blessings from South Australia💕🐨
Thank you, Tula. My major fault is buying yarn without a pattern in mind. It’s either on sale or the colours are so beautiful. I I can’t help it. So hoarding is a major problem for me! I once bought 12 skeins because the store was re-organizing that particular department.!! The colour was terrible, ghastly but, how can you avoid buying skeins at 2$ each when the regular prices $12-$15 each. I couldn’t pass up such a deal.! I crocheted a cocoon cardigan with it! I’ll wear it around the house.Hahahaha.
Oh my! Yes, it is hard to resist a great bargain! I think I have learned that I no longer buy unless I really like a certain yarn - but even then far too much ends up in the house! 😄
I am working on relaxing while crocheting. I am guilty of sitting way too long in a poor position. I will try standing up while crocheting to see how that feels. I love all your tips! Thank you!
Tuula, it's alway a joy watching your crochet videos. I was in Finland for a few hours from Denmark a few years back. Now that I am seeing all the missed beauty that you are showing in Finland, I hope in the near future to go back and stay awhile in your country to explore it's wonders. In the USA there are no such thing as recycle bins for crochet/knit items at a waste station. Those are one of the places I would like to check out and maybe purchase some recycle items from... Would you say that in your country a large percentage of Finnish folks crochet or knit especially to warrant recycled bins? How long has Finland has waste station for crochet/knit goods? Do you know of any country that has it also? Have a rewarding and beautiful day, Tuula!
Thank you! I hope you will soon get to visit Finland again! The textile recycling centers are quite new here too and there aren't many of them yet. I happen to live in an area that started them. They are for all kinds of textiles and they are called end-of-life textiles so it's only for things that people think are not good enough to go to charity shops. They go through all they get, there are lots of clothes in very good condition thrown out too, also sold by the weight. So it's not just for knitted and crocheted items but there seem to be lots of those at the moment. I will go back there again next week! All the best!
Let us (your subscribers/fans) know what you find next week at your textile recycling car on a video! Last year I encountered a man throwing away a lamb & alpaca (yarns that I cannot afford to buy) sweater in his garbage. I asked him if I can have it. He explained to me that it has a hole in it. When I told him it was ok, he gave it to me. When I got home, trying to figure what I can made with it... Well, with the 2 sleeves I made with a crocheting around it into 2 small dogs sweater. I cut around the body of the sweater and made a sweater with crochet around it for a large dog. It keep all 3 dogs warm last winter. One cutie would stand by the door and wait for you to put the sweater on him, before his walk. It used to take me 8 to 20 hrs. to crochet a dog sweater. Now I will look for reuse recycle sweaters to make them.@@TuulaMaaria
Great tips. Difficult to forgo so many beautiful yarns out there, knowing that something wonderful even if not previously decided is able to come of it. Posture and tensing are two things I will be working on for certain!
4:50 I just about died laughing when the person pulled out the sock, then the yarn, then the card. Before the person opened it, I thought it was going to say, "Here, you can finish this yourself! I give up!" And after that, it would have the instructions or a link where to find the instructions online. 😂😅😂😅😅😂
Having started learning now that I am older and (I like to pretend) wiser, I allow myself to quit if something is too difficult: I don't feel I must accomplish a new stitch and I can frog the project without guilt if it is beyond my level. One thing that helps is to use cheap yarn that's easy to crochet and make all the mistakes with the "prototype" before I dig out that expensive yarn I've been saving for. My mistake is trying to reach a particular stage before putting the work down - being tired I am more likely to make mistakes so I just waste time having to frog it when I have finally have had a rest! There was one project I nearly gave up several times because the cotton I was using was so splitty. I didn't even feel accomplished when I finally finished the garment, just relieved. I will use up the rest of that yarn in my stash but I swore I will never buy it again!
Thank you for sharing! That is a great point, allowing yourself to quit if something is too difficult. So true that more likely to make mistakes when tired.
This was a great video with such helpful tips I never considered. I could really relate to not keeping too much yarn. I work with a church group making useful things. We collaborate on group projects and each has a specialty or two. I make hats from bulky yarn, kids puppet washcloths from cotton yarn and baby caps from really fine yarn. It’s a nice mix and never boring. Luckily we have a yarn room, so I only have what I need at home.
Ik heb bij Hobbii een speciaal haakkussen gekocht. Ziet er uit als een borstvoedingskussen. Daarmee is het haken erg ontspannend en houd je automatisch je schouders laag. Ik geniet van alle video's en tips. Dankjewel! Groetjes uit Nederland 😍
#5 is exactly what I use crocheting for; crocheting is a mindful, intentional action for me to relax my shoulders and hands. Thank you for adding this to your advice!
I enjoy your videos very much. Thank you! I’m guilty of holding the hook too tightly and being very tense. I’m also guilty of getting discouraged when I’ve made a mistake and giving up on my project. Sometimes I go back to it just because I need to be committed. Does that ever happen to you?
Thank you! If I make a mistake I normally undo that part right away but then may leave it a few days before I continue. Depends if it is for myself or for a video - if the latter I have no choice but to either keep going or make a different video!
Where to begin 😀 I try not to buy yarn that I don’t have a project t in mind for, I hoard far too much yarn (it’s taken over), being too tense and not deliberately relaxing muscles I believe I hit most of the points…. Imagine how much I would enjoy crocheting if I changed some habits, I already enjoy it
Oh my, you make so much sense. I'm very guilty of several of these. Too late for the tip on too much yarn, but I am going to get up more often as I work. I love that you help people just starting so much so that they love crochet as much as so many of us do.
Thank you for the breast feeding pillow tip I'm 65 my elbows will get to hurting after several hours of crocheting great tip have a wonderful week enjoy crocheting everyone
Hey 👋 Thanks for your tips I recently saw a girl crocheting while sitting outdoors on a construction that was a combination of a home training bicycle and a little table instead of a display That idea really inspired me Moving the body and healthy posture are so important
Thank you! These are great tips and reminders ❤ I, too, need to remember to sit with better posture and relax my shoulders more while I crochet. As for buying yarn, I find a pattern I want to make, then purchase yarn accordingly. We don't have much room in our small apartment, so that also helps to keep my yarn stash down.
I gave up on all the fake you tubers - I only watch you and Atreyu crochet now - encouraging and both of you have really calming voices and REAL projects! So much happier now (ok one more but she doesn't speak English lol)
@@TuulaMaaria yes you've helped me a lot and do check him out - you two both have those unique voices that people hardly get to meet in real life! Ok plus the accents lol
@@TuulaMaaria I have gotten lots of yarn that way but what's even more distressing for me is to see the family photo albums, letters, cards, etc. in the second hand stores or in an auction. Thanks for sharing your talent.
I have a long skinny neck, i get lots of headaches because my neck gets stiff, so i use a memory foam airplane pillow. It has to be a quality item otherwise it won't do the job. It helps my neck by sharing the burden of supporting my head. I do the chin tuck and nose to armpits exercises, also very helpful. Thanks for your tutorials, they're always very helpful.
Thank you grandma. I love all your videos. Can you please make a video about how to calculate stitches to match the size and how to decrease and increase stitches? 🙏
One of my latest videos is about calculating stitches th-cam.com/video/3dR1g_cLU48/w-d-xo.html Increasing and decreasing is different with every different stitch so I only have those in videos about projects that need one or the other.
You always have great ideas! I tried standing & crocheting by accident and gave up on the whole idea bc my tension changed immediately. Precisely the reason i do not work in mohair. I make so many mistakes and frog so often i wld destroy the mohair. Saving most of yr videos to go back and watch.
Thank you! Probably crocheting while standing up would depend on the way you crochet, some methods it would affect, others not. I also use mohair and other difficult fibers rarely for that same reason! I'm glad my videos are useful 💗
@@TuulaMaaria yes indeed. After i posted re my tension i started thinking about it (disabled, changing my position often is paramount) and i recalled that when i worked as an illustrator i wld stand and draw/ paint but a lot had to do with my breathing. I must revisit this as a crocheting option!
Guilty! Especially of the starting to late thing... I once made a gift for a teacher and finished it in the lesson before the one we had with her... She was very grateful though and just recently told me that she took it with her on holidays for a little extra luck🥰😁
@@TuulaMaaria Yesss she is a great teacher, helped me Soo much and I just wanted to give something back. I made a creature combining her favorite animals, she absolutely loved it and told me a million times how adorable it is😅🥰🥹
I need to remember to take your tip and relax my shoulders especially while crocheting. I catch myself with one shoulder up/tensed, and relax it (usually my left🤷). I've stopped buying yarn 🧶 until I use the majority of what I already own 😊. I have more than one person needs now 😅...so...
Thank you for your videos they are very helpful. I have changed my habits and buy yarn when I have my next project in mind. I love your delivery and informative videos❤
I don't know why being "tense" is my default when my mother began correcting me about poor posture from childhood. You would think that the proper habit would be concrete some 50+ years in. I guess I'm glad to know I'm not alone. Arthritis, Carpal Tunnel, Sciatica (and old age lol) force me to shift often. I can't say it makes me hurt less, but not obeying the body nudges sure can make it worse! 😮
The thing that I really need to work on is relaxing my shoulders. I have been crocheting for over 50 years, and don't think I was ever told to relax my shoulders. Just recently I started doing amigurumi and have found it causes me to tense my hands and this has resulted in some hand pain that I have never experienced before while crocheting.
Thank you for watching! 💗 Check out also the 5 crochet tips that are most important for me - they could be for you also! th-cam.com/video/tbWfp7ZgS7s/w-d-xo.html

Great, thank you! It is always lovely to hear of men crocheting!
Good things to make habitual! The shoulder one is a very good piece of advice!
Another great video! I love that you tell us where you're filming and that you have such enchanting surroundings.
Glad you enjoy it! I love to show a bit of where I am without taking too much time for that!
Lovely surroundings Tuula ❣️ what is the temperature there?. I crochet in an electric recliner with the armrest on the left and a pillow under my arm on the right while watching tv and following the TH-cam video tutorial too.
@@delladearest2511 That's a great idea for a chair! Today the temperature has been around 23°C, nice and warm but not hot!
The second tip is extremely important. Very beautiful places! I just decided yesterday to finish the 2 projects that I have and to give all the extra leftovers to a thrift store.
Great, other people will benefit!
@@TuulaMaaria 😯
I have noticed this as well!
Definitely the relaxing shoulders and hands and taking breaks. I totally got carried away with a project recently and am suffering for it. A lesson learned, and it's good to be reminded.. thank you for another excellent video and the beautiful Finnish background.
Lovely, thank you so much!
Wonderful! It's great to hear that you have started to crochet later in life 💗 and little by little advancing to more challenging projects!
I get overwhelmed with projects for my grandchildren! I have 17 grandbabies and they always want me to make something! Of course I rarely say no.
Wow, 17, that would be a lot of work but enjoyable I'm sure!
Thank you, the warming tip sounds like something useful for crochet too!
All sound advice! I think yarn hoarding is my bad habit too lol! The trouble is, I can't resist/say no when people are kind enough to offer me more, or I find a real bargain!😁 Thanks for another great video x
Thank you so much! That's me too, can't say no if anyone offers me yarn! 😄
LOL😊
Thank you Tuula. The scenery is beautiful. I am guilty of buying too much yarn. I see it and can’t resist it. ❤
Thank you! I can understand that very well! 😊
I work a job helping people on the phone and crochet when it is slow, I use a pillow on my lap for comfort, works perfectly.
Good idea!
Thank you much, happy to hear you enjoyed it! 😊 You seem to have a lot of work for the show, good luck for it!
As always, your tips and comments are appreciated. The town you are in looks lovely.
Enjoy your time with your daughter.
Thank you so much!
Thank you Tuula Maaria. I am guilty of tension in my shoulders when crocheting. I like your beautiful environment and your ear rings 😊
Thank you! I love colourful earrings and always better if they were made by a craftsperson like these💗
Finland seems so sarine and tranquil....love it....u are blessed to be in that country....thank you for the tips 😊
My pleasure 😊
Researching for new projects to crochet has become a hobby in itself! I really need to crochet the beautiful projects I have found!
She who dies with the largest stash... Wins!!! LOL!
@@5centfabrications578 😁😄
Great tips. The 1sock & a ball of yarn was funny, i liked that
Thank you! The first time I did that family was surprised, now they are used to it! 😄
@@TuulaMaaria lol, that's so great. I need to do one for my son just to see his face, lol. He will laugh.
To be able to visit such a relaxing place, this is my dream, thank you for showing it.
Hope you can visit one day!
I am guilty of buying yarn without a project in mind to use it so it goes into my stash
I also crochet sat in the same position for long periods and my shoulders ache
Lovely tips and beautiful surroundings ❤️
Thanks for sharing! Glad you liked the place too 😊
Thank you for sharing your beautiful surroundings.
Thank you! Great to hear that the poll helped you get started looking at your stash 😊 Hope you find interesting things to use your stash for!
The sock and yarn gift made me smile so much!
😄
I am working on a new crochet pattern, and I find myself tensing up my shoulders and gripping the crochet hook too tightly while trying to learn the pattern. I don't intend to do that, but when I realize I am doing that, I do try to settle down. I so enjoy your videos. It looks so beautiful where you live. Thank you!
Thank you! You are so right, when we need to concentrate on something really deeply, shoulders tighten up without noticing it!
Great common sense tips!! I especially can relate to the tip of late gifts! Usually what i wind up doing is purchasing something and saving the unfinished gift for a birthday or even the following Christmas!🤭
That's a great idea too! 👍
Thank you, I love filming outside but don't get to do it very often, it takes more time!
Good you have found what keeps you feeling less stressed!
Love your always insightful videos. You are a very charming person. Thank you for sharing your expertise in crochet, sharing your personality, your crochet tips, and your crochet stories from your crochet journey/history.
I couldn't say it better!👍👍
Exactly!
Thank you so much, lovey to hear! 💗💜

Brilliant tips / reminders /video thank you 💖
Thank you for sharing! 💗
That's a great problem to have... endless storage space! I knew I should have bought a 3 bedroom house instead of a 2 bedroom! LOL
Over this past year, I've been able to talk myself out of buying lots of things that I feel 'inspired' to make (knit, sew, quilt, whatever) BECAUSE I KNOW that I won't get around to making them, either because I'm starting to really slow down now or my arthritis plays up too much and I can't do the work 🙄☹😞
It is a hard job knowing exactly how much we are able to use! Wonderful that you spin yarn 😊
I love seeing what you have shown us. I’m guilty of buying yarn, fabric and other project stuff without having a project in mind. I have been reducing my yarn stash as I will never use it all up.
That's the things - I have also realised that I already have that much yarn that I would need to live quite a long time to use it all up!
I just found your channel and I love it. When I was a very young woman, I told both my mother and her sister I would never have their stashes of yarn. They each told me it was genetic and couldn't be helped. They were right.
Ha ha, that is funny! 😊
Good sound advice! I put a 30 minute timer when I crochet to remember to get up and do another small chore just to move a bit
That's a great idea!
The tip I know I should be doing is the one about posture, I never notice while I'm crocheting but the next day I have bad shoulder and neck strain. I am also guilty of buying too much yarn. X K
Thank ja for sharing! 😊
I can so relate to all of your points! Especially the tension..I was crocheting this evening and found my shoulders round my ears I was so tense..it’s good for someone to remind you to relax..crochet is good for my mental health but I don’t want it damaging my physical health! Thank you so much for sharing your videos, you are so calm and your voice is so gentle..love listening and watching you❤️
Thank you so much! 💗 Hope crochet will continue to be good for you both for mental and physical health!
I love your videos, always calming, and informative. Thank you so much for all the tips. I'm a newbie 😊
Glad you like them! Happy crocheting!
Thank you, happy that you found my channel!
T-Rex sounds very complicated, it's great you can make things for children in your extended family! 💗
Thanks for your tops most already know
Wonderful! You have done many different yarn crafts and lovely that you continue to make things for your relatives! All the best 💗
I don't buy yarn without a plan, but I do buy for too many plans. Then I don't have enuf crochet time available. Too many ideas not enuf time, lol. It's getting better, a bit, as I'm retired now.
Great, little by little you get them all done!
Thank you. I will remember to follow your advice💕🍀
Wonderful!
Thanks for sharing!! Wonderful that you have started to crochet again, the main thing is to enjoy it!
What a beautiful Community thanks for sharing. I appreciate the sage advice as well. My trouble is that I always crochet too tightly my mother was forever telling me that loosen up loosen up I still struggle with it today I've met you at 3 that I have to consciously remind myself. Blessings and love
Wonderful! For crocheting too tightly, does taking a bigger hook help in that?
@@TuulaMaaria no LOL once I got going I am usually ok but I have to remind myself to ease up
OMG So glad I’m not the only one who has given a partially done project and the rest of the yarn as a “gift” to someone 😅
I'm sure there rae many who do that! 😁
Oh, I hope your wrist will soon be good enough so you can crochet more!
Sounds like a great idea!
I understand that so well! 😃 You can give the gift in stages if you don't finish on time!

I love your videos. Your approach is natural and gentle and most of all, are really useful ❤
Thank you so much!
I am working on relaxing while crocheting. I am guilty of sitting way too long in a poor position. I will try standing up while crocheting to see how that feels. I love all your tips! Thank you!

Wonderful crochet tips and I loved the scenes of Finland
Great, thank you!
True, there are so many beautiful yarns everywhere!
4:50 I just about died laughing when the person pulled out the sock, then the yarn, then the card. Before the person opened it, I thought it was going to say, "Here, you can finish this yourself! I give up!" And after that, it would have the instructions or a link where to find the instructions online.
😂😅😂😅😅😂
You have given me a new idea! It would be better to tell the person to finish the sock themselves than promising to do it! 😄😄
@@TuulaMaaria hilarious! It would make a great April Fool's joke. 🤭🙂

Awesome! Thank you! I'm glad that being Finnish is a positive thing! 💙
Love the tips and especially the beautiful scenery of Finland!!!
Glad you like them!
Thank u Tuula! Very beautiful scenery there❤
Thank you! Yes, it's a lovely place, especially in summer time!
I enjoyed seeing where you live , it's beautiful there ! Thank you for all your tips ! I enjoy your channel .
Thank you so much, happy to hear! 💜
Thank you! Lovely that you make things with others, you have a great varied selection of things to make!
Love the scenery. Thanks for the video
Wonderful, thank you! 💗

Ik heb bij Hobbii een speciaal haakkussen gekocht. Ziet er uit als een borstvoedingskussen. Daarmee is het haken erg ontspannend en houd je automatisch je schouders laag. Ik geniet van alle video's en tips. Dankjewel! Groetjes uit Nederland 😍
Great, that kind of pillow makes crochet more relaxing! Happy crocheting!
I am new to your channel, but have learned a lot in the short amount of time I've been watching. Thank you for the great content!
Awesome, thank you so much! 💗
#5 is exactly what I use crocheting for; crocheting is a mindful, intentional action for me to relax my shoulders and hands. Thank you for adding this to your advice!
Love that!
Imagine how much I would enjoy crocheting if I changed some habits, I already enjoy it
You can work on one thing at the time! 😊
Oh my, you make so much sense. I'm very guilty of several of these. Too late for the tip on too much yarn, but I am going to get up more often as I work. I love that you help people just starting so much so that they love crochet as much as so many of us do.
Thank you 💗 Happy crocheting!
Thank you for the breast feeding pillow tip I'm 65 my elbows will get to hurting after several hours of crocheting great tip have a wonderful week enjoy crocheting everyone
Excellent idea! I'm 73 and find this a real problem. It cuts my time very short! This is great!
Thank you! Hope you can get a pillow like that to help!
Happy to have found you! Thank you for the tips and that Christmas gift smile.
Welcome!! Great you found the channel and enjoyed that bit! 😄
You are very wise & so kind to share these great insights❣️
Thank you so much!
Hey 👋
Thanks for your tips
I recently saw a girl crocheting while sitting outdoors on a construction that was a combination of a home training bicycle and a little table instead of a display
That idea really inspired me
Moving the body and healthy posture are so important
That would be a great idea, or sitting on any kind of exercise machine while crocheting!
Thank you! These are great tips and reminders ❤
I, too, need to remember to sit with better posture and relax my shoulders more while I crochet.
As for buying yarn, I find a pattern I want to make, then purchase yarn accordingly. We don't have much room in our small apartment, so that also helps to keep my yarn stash down.
Thank you for sharing! 🙂
I gave up on all the fake you tubers - I only watch you and Atreyu crochet now - encouraging and both of you have really calming voices and REAL projects! So much happier now (ok one more but she doesn't speak English lol)
Thank you, lovely to hear you like my channel! Have to check out the other one, haven't seen it!
@@TuulaMaaria yes you've helped me a lot and do check him out - you two both have those unique voices that people hardly get to meet in real life! Ok plus the accents lol
I buy a bulk of my yarn at garage sales..so many younger people don"t want to learn n they sell the older relatives when they die. Very cheap too
True, I have got some yarn that way too!
@@TuulaMaaria I have gotten lots of yarn that way but what's even more distressing for me is to see the family photo albums, letters, cards, etc. in the second hand stores or in an auction.
Thanks for sharing your talent.
@@gray-hairedmama5421 Oh, that would be hard to see, have never seen that here! Maybe the EU privacy laws prevent those being sold!
A big hello from Germany and thanks for your tips ! 🥰
Thank you, greetings from Finland! 😊
Thank you! Great that you have found what works best for you. I haven't heard of nose to armpits exercise, sounds useful!
Love that! Great you got it finished anyway!
Thank you for sharing! 😊 That is an interesting point - more yarn than one person needs!
Great tips!!! Thank you
Thank you for your videos they are very helpful. I have changed my habits and buy yarn when I have my next project in mind. I love your delivery and informative videos❤
Thank you so much! 💗
Yes, I suppose there are naturally more and more problems as we get older! I have osteoarthritis in my hands, on some days they hurt.
Yes good advices for me thanks
Thank you!
Hope you find what works for you to relax more!
When I was in 7th grade I had a best friend who was from Finland. I lived in Canada at the time. Love your channel!
Oh, that is interesting!
