      I would say he's not a lad because a lad would be a human male, and he is not human, but it's open to different interpretations. He is pretty good, though. :)

    I disagree with your statement in the beginning, that Azi doesn't value the trust thing as much as Crowley because in Heaven they are honest etc. My take is that Azi is the kind of person who goes to great lengths to deny reality to keep his idealistic world view. Crowley is a realist. That's the biggest difference

  • @cawareyoudoin7379
    @cawareyoudoin7379 ปีที่แล้ว +58

    I'm gonna cite fellshish from tumblr, because I think they summarized really well why this episode is funny yet also rather creepy:
    "girl help the eldritch horrors are organising a pride and prejudice party and making us dance to mirror their forbidden and repressed love. yes there is a michael jackson thriller video reenactment outside trying to get in. no yeah I still want that rare doctor who annual."
    (Even funnier is that Neil Gaiman replied: "It made sense when I wrote it").
    Anyways, yes you are very correct in saying that Aziraphale doesn't really get humans entirely, but I think what is also going on is VERY VERY HEAVY PROJECTION on his part. Like, projection to rival all projections. At this point, Nina and Maggie are just an excuse for him. He's doing "the ball" for himself and Crowley. And so lost in his own little fantasy that he's 1. Infringing on the humans' personal freedom and 2. Ignoring the danger Crowley is trying to tell him about, until he absolutely cannot ignore it any longer.

    A couple of thoughts.
    Diversity. An advantage of British shows is that they are very used to a mixing pot of actors that wasn't added on because. "We need x of this ethnicity/gender representation" like you find on some American shows, but their inclusion feels a lot more random and organic. The handicapped Angel talks about how she was cast because of her personality. She had worked with the director before, and he needed a sarcastic angel and she came to mind. The fact that she is in a wheelchair was something they were happy to work around.
    As for Azi's line about "rescuing me makes him so happy." I mean Azi is such a romantic. Of course, he loves it. Remember that the times we've seen Crowley come to his rescue, Azi didn't call him. Crowley showed up at his own free will. It wasn't unwanted, Azi was appreciative, but he didn't ask for it. As Azi said himself. He has a plan. He probably would have saved himself from Bastille and the Nazi. Crowley however showed up and took control, and I think that is Crowley's love language. He's a demon. He does favors. It is how he expresses himself. He takes Azi out to lunch to places Azi would love, so he can watch him eat like a cute weirdo. I mean, if I had a sexy bad boy boyfriend that wanted to rescue me from shackles, even if I could get myself out of it... I get it!

    • @HuntingViolets
      @HuntingViolets ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Yes, I think Crowley said in the church that he was rescuing Aziraphale from being "embarrassed" or something like that. The fandom seems to agree that Crowley's love language is (often) acts of service, and there are things he may be only capable of doing because of his synergy with Aziraphale like the 25 lazeri miracle and stopping time (while a lot of people think Crowley's stopping time means he was an incredibly powerful angel, I wonder whether he would have been able to do that had not Aziraphale not threatened to never talk to him again).

    Also someone pointed it out, but the scene where that women says, "You're a good lad." And Crowley responds, "I'm not actually, either." I'm pretty sure is meant to be an acknowledgement that Crowley, despite presenting male most of the time, isn't actually a man. Gaimen has said multiple times that this is the case for pretty much all angels. I'm not sure if you noticed in season one, but he did obviously present female when he was a nanny, and he also did so during Jesus's crucifixion
    Although Aziraphale indulging in Crowley's need to help him is endearing, it is also a bit frustrating because things would probably go so much smoother if they just communicated. It's painful to watch, both because I want to scream at them and because I'm just constantly going, "Aww, omg they're so CUTE." Crowley in particular is just very cute this season and I kept getting frustrated for him and all that people and Aziraphale put him through.

  • @huntress666

    Totally agree with some of your ending points. The acting of David, Michael, John, and Miranda are really what elevates a relatively thin plot to the point of having actual emotional payoff.
    This was all done in 2021 during pandemic restrictions as well, so their episodes got cut from 8 to 6 as Neil has mentioned on his Tumblr, and ep 5 suffers from it the most, imo.
    Did we need like ten solid minutes of Shax calling demons together to attack? Well actually... No. Not in my opinion. And I can't tell yet if it's admirable that Aziraphale's actions here cause us to question his character, or just an easy out.
    But then I thought that of season 1 frankly, and so I've taken to assuming that Aziraphale's cageiness and general overreach are actually a character flaw. Just as Crowley's noncommunicative abilities might be his. Which, in my mind, makes the Austen-ness theme that came up of their relationship, more prominent tbh.
    In analyzing the story, I try to keep in my mind a couple things. I first always remember that these two are supposed to be relatively incompetent spies that grew to care more for each other and 'their place they built together' than their respective sides. Secondly, that the 'soft magic' seems almost always defined as 'what would be funnier for the bit?' which is very Pratchett-esque to me, lmao. And that generally, the biggest themes of Good Omens, always seem centered around hope, love, and choice, which makes what season two actually is, an incredibly fascinating continuation, and wildly emotional.
    Can't wait to hear your final thoughts! It'll be fun.

    I think that Aziraphale and Crowley understand the world through through a fictional lens. Aziraphale sees the world and understands humans through literary fiction. Crowley, who is much more prone to change sees it through movies. He’s a fan of James Bond. Who does he relate human romance through? Was it Tony Curtis? I think Crowley genuinely likes rescuing Aziraphale because it makes him feel like a hero. He wants to be dashing. I think Aziraphale is more competent than he lets on and could easily avoid these situations he gets into, but it gives them an opportunity live live out their little fictional fantasies, and also to interact, which they maybe didn’t have as much opportunity to do in the past. They’re both shit at communication, so this is what they’ve got.
    As far as the ball and what exactly Aziraphale did… I think it’s more an Austen filter than manipulating free will. I think even Aziraphale gets caught in it. There’s always that expectation that things are going to be solved at the ball, and they never are. I like that because Nina was resistant to the meeting in the first place, she’s partially immune to the filter. Her mind is definitely her own.
    And I’m with you. This is a second act season. This is about getting the chess pieces in place for act 3.

    • @HuntingViolets
      @HuntingViolets ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It was Richard Curtis, who did Notting Hill; Love, Actually; and Bridget Jones's Diary, but I think Crowley was referring to the rain scene in Four Weddings and a Funeral.

    • @HuntingViolets
      @HuntingViolets ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I wrote a long comment about the ball, but then I moved it to a Word doc to be finished as a Tumblr post before posting here.
      Your "filter" describes it very well. It's probably easier to get caught in it if you're in love, which, to my mind, Aziraphale is (even if you're just in love with the idea of getting a rare _Doctor Who Annual.)_
      Not to say Crowley isn't in love, but he and Nina have other things on their minds that interfere with the enchantment, and Aziraphale's mind has been full of Crowley all season in ways that make everything else a little bit _less_ for him, somehow, even things he's personally working on, if that makes sense--whereas the thing on Crowley's mind is protecting Aziraphale, and that is inextricably linked to _his_ love.

    I really wish this season was allowed to be the 8 episodes they originally had planned. It meant they had to cut a lot out and compress the rest. I still think they do a good job with what they had to work with... but yeah. It's a shame.
    Also I think you're spot on with Aziraphale STILL not understanding how humans 'work.' He really thinks all their issues can be solved with just few snacks and some dancing, when we all know that's not how life works.
    I hope you enjoy the last episode. I can't guarantee it'll answer all of your questions, but I'm keen to see your analysis of it regardless.

  • @elliart7432
    @elliart7432 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    That's the thing, Aziraphale's picked up on the correlation between Crowley rescuing him and then being in a good mood, but he takes it at face value. What he _doesn't_ understand is that Crowley's happiness comes from the excuse to spend time with him afterwards, not the rescuing itself. All along he would've _loved_ to spend time with Aziraphale _without_ needing a reason, and as of the past few years that's a luxury he now has. So I think it's safe to say Crowley no longer enjoys needing to rescue him

    Lots of fans have been speculating as to who or what Nina and especially Maggie might be. Because yes, a lot of weird coincidences happen around them, and they sometimes act a bit strangely. I've seen people posit that Maggie is: a demon, possessed by an angel, a character inserted into the story with the Book of Life, and a few other things. I personally doubt any of these are actually true. But I do think either just Nina or both of them might be witches in some way, like Agnes and Anathema, and just not know it. Especially Nina seeing through some bullshit, asking poignant questions, and being resistant to hypnotization.
    Or it could just be some clumsy writing and it doesn't really mean anything. It happens.

  • @cinnabonbons
    @cinnabonbons ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I think the problems with the season are a combination of Covid times and also the lack of Pratchett’s influence. As far as I can tell, this season is (intentionally) all set-up for the actual plot Gaiman and Pratchett had conceived as a sequel. I don’t know how much of this season was previously discussed and how much of it was thrown together just to get us from Point A to Point B but it feels like most of it came exclusively from Gaiman. Hopefully season three has a better balance since it’s something they did actually work on years ago.
    There’s definitely moments of great writing this season but it really is carried on David, Michael, and Miranda’s backs. Their performances elevate the material.

The Wheel of Time was my favorite show of 2021, and continues to be one of my favorites rewatch after rewatch (love the question of gender the magic system and plot is trying to interrogate. also women being shady and brutal >>>), but they had the same issue with lack of faith that showed up in the funding being much less than you’d want for this kind of high fantasy. (Also COVID-but tbh the writing team is on another level bc setting aside the iffy cgi battle the actual writing choices forced by the pandemic? couldn’t have pictured better). I need them to actually have faith in the sff people are paying attention to-actual wider audience people, not just people who are die hard fantasy nerds (i say this with love, as a die hard fantasy nerd) who will seek out fantasy shows regardless of quality or previous interest.
