      Exactly! I don't like the fact that people, after all this time, still don't understand Asexuals. The Ineffable Husbands CAN kiss and still count as an ace couple. Being Asexual doesn't mean your Aromantic as well. I happen to be both, and seeing people kiss on screen SOMETIMES makes me uncomfortable... And, personally, I wouldn't want to kiss anyone. But that doesn't that it's the same for everyone. Both "ace" and "aro" are umbrella thermes, meaning they warry between little to none, depening on the person. The Ineffible husbands aren't sexualy attracted to each other, but they are romantically. I know that it's not an easy thing to understand, but just because people don't understand it why can't just... Let go of it or ASK someone who is has a better knowledge in that field?!
      I don't want to call out anyone, but please, if you don't understand a queer therme ask about or look it up on the internet. And give some respect to Neil Gailman because he's respectful to his decised friend, to his/their fans and to the actors. And we live in a world where people like him are rare, so let's give some love for the things he does.

    People actually say it’s homophobic for queer characters to act like actual human beings and not have everything figured out at first kiss? That’s so weird. Every long term relationship I know has gone through a season 2 episode 6 style gut punch at some point (often in an airport). I really liked how authentic that felt. As much as I love Good Omens (I even backed the Graphic Novel Kickstarter) I find the fandom ridiculous; first in season one it was queerbaiting and now it’s homophobic for Neil daring to add conflict to Aziraphale and Crowley love story. As someone who grew up in the 90’s when the only ‘gay’ character we got on tv where queer-coded villains and a gay character in a very special episode where they got aids and/or died of aids, it makes me irritated when people say Good Omens is homophobic.

      Those people are ridiculous. Its not homophobic at all. Its one thing to joke and be all dramatic about it. I'm a Heartstopper fan and one of the character's says "Homophobia", when these characters call their name and it interrupts them and their GF kissing. Saying "homophobia" like that in a joking way is fine and pretty dramatic and funny. But to actually believe the show is homophobic and make those kind of accusations towards Neil is stupid.

    • @AuroraDeLirio
      @AuroraDeLirio ปีที่แล้ว +102

      I love how Good Omens manages representation very gracefully, but it worries me how the fandom kept asking Neil if there would be representation of each sexuality, each disability, each race, and even went to ask if there were specific triggering scenes. Then they get aggressive over the choices made. The show handles diversity with naturality, but there is only so much you can do with one show.
      I honestly fear for shows with fandoms like that, it happened to Steven Universe. Since it was a show which started off pretty strong and had great diversity, people clung to it a bit too hard and scared off a bigger but less intense part of the fandom.
      What angers me about this is that fandoms are extremely harsh on media creators who ARE making an effort to be a good example. It's like mistreating the few people who care about you and make an effort.

    The fandom doesn't want to admit that episode 6's ending was the most powerful and painfully realistic way to end the series (for now). It's earth-shattering because it's true. These characters WOULD react in the ways they did. The azi-crowley love story isn't over, but the story could end here and it'd make perfect sense even though it's sad.

    • @TF2CrunchyFrog
      @TF2CrunchyFrog ปีที่แล้ว +36

      It's entirely in character. Aziraphale is the idealist who truly believes he can still effect a change for the _better_ (and whose journey will likely sadly involve the realization that some corrupt organizations can't be reformed but tearing them down entirely would also result in chaos, which is entirely realistic). Crowley is the _former_ idealist who became a rebel and then a cynic... who ironically the now the one who wants to _preserve_ the Status Quo of Heaven vs Hell, or at least the cozy little Status Quo of his and Azi's relationship on Earth. It's an interesting reversal.

    This has been making me livid too, tbh. Even Neil himself was like "Sorry you guys had unexpected emotions" but like...really? He's giving us EXACTLY what we wanted, with a cliffhanger to transition to the next season (when it does come out, we need it greenlit Amazon) to boot. The media illiteracy in this fandom is just astounding sometimes! The breakup is a NATURAL PART of any three-act love story, which Neil has SPECIFIED THAT IT IS. Someone describes it as The Empire Strikes Back part of Good Omens, and I think that's a really good way to look at it. It just. ARGHHH. Learn to process heavy emotions when it comes to fiction WITHOUT lashing out at the creator. The fact that Neil has the power to make us feel that profoundly about fictional characters is, in itself, so completely wonderful. Plus, the people claiming he's queerbaiting are so annoying. He's been writing queer characters and being a great ally his entire career.

That was my biggest concern and why I was so upset. The thought of the show being canceled after coming so far just devastated me because I lost the Dark Crystal just like this. It was successful but Netflix pulled the plug and it caused everything else associated with the Dark Crystal was canceled soon after.
      But the fans I'm friends with are very hopeful that won't happen (I'm still worried but I'm slightly more hopeful now)

Amazon literally has no good content, Good Omens is the only good show they have and if they're smart, they'll salvage whatever fan base they have left and the jump at the opportunity to finish the series. Because it's going to take a while for them to make more and better content and Good Omens was handed to them on a silver platter along with its solid fan base, and a rare one too. One that is both keen on representation and a good story. That's something you don't see everyday

    People are forgetting that while they are entitled to having their opinions and expressing them, they’re NOT entitled to having their opinions listened to or applied. The author is entitled to writing what they feel is best for their story, just as you are to like or dislike the direction they go. I’ve noticed this in other fandoms as well, you don’t like a certain story beat, well clearly it’s a personal slight from a terrible human being who is ruining their own story. And after awhile it’s like why are you still here and wasting this much energy on something you don’t like, just find something worth your time. Neil Gaiman isn’t holding a gun to your head demanding that like his show, but that doesn’t give you the right to barge through his door and demand he change things for you.

      I've noticed this, too. There's definitely a trend of people rushing out to harass creators whenever new development happens that they, personally don't like, and I think it's a problem with the internet making creators too accessible. I also think these people don't understand that their opinion is their opinion, and whatever the writers do, there will be people who like it and people who don't like it, and their preferences are not objectively correct.

    Everything leading up to the kiss and after hit harder than the actual kiss for me.

      I also just saw a new theory that he lied to protect Crowley! IT MAKES TOTAL SENSE. That he was threatened by Metatron to erase them both if he didn’t go, and that Metatron actually didn’t want Crowley to go at all and told Aziraphale that. Aziraphale knew Crowley would say no to being an angel again, so he had to leave anyway and lie. Because he knew if he told Crowley the truth that he was threatened and doesn’t actually want to go, because he’d rather stay with him (especially after that kiss), he knew Crowley would try to help him and he wanted to protect him.

      Yes! And they wouldn't need to have that character growth if the season ended differently. Which, imho, would have done a disservice to the story. I love that they get to fight for each other in the next season, and I look forward to seeing the ways in which they will do so.

    • @jackriver8385

      @@jjsstikbotvideos4421yes, throughout the season we see Azi come to terms with lying, and the ways in which it isn't always bad to do so. Even his relationship with magic, which is, in a sense, a form of lying to the audience.

    • @jjsstikbotvideos4421
      @jjsstikbotvideos4421 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@jackriver8385 Yeah exactly!! I feel like there was so much emphasis on lying this season. It’s all going to come full circle. The more I think about the liar theory, the more it makes complete sense! I also do still btw, think that part of Aziraphale definitely thinks he can change Heaven for the better, and is going to have to finally learn that he can’t, and that he needs to get away from Heaven. But I also think there was definitely A LOT of manipulation from Metatron and that Aziraphale either has a plan up his sleeve, or knows he needs to make one up in Heaven without Crowley’s help. People thinking it’s 100% out of character for him probably aren’t right. I think it was in character, especially for an abuse victim. Abuse victims tend to crawl back to their abusers and think that they can change things for the better. But either way, I think he was threatened. You can tell he seems like he may not be telling the full story of what Metatron said to him. Like he’s leaving bits out, or completely sugarcoating everything he said, because he and Crowley were actually threatened, and he doesn’t want to alert Crowley. And that he seemed choked up, like he couldn’t quite get out what he wanted to say, and would say something else instead. Mainly.. the “I forgive you line”

    The problem a lot of people have is that they think that something has to make them feel good for that thing to be good. But the thing is, the fact that something makes you feel sad or angry doesn't mean it was badly done. That's the point. It's about telling a good and honest story, not making us feel good or nice all the time. And yes, you are well within your rights to not like that show or that event within the show, but that feeling is a thing that exists inside of you, and it's up to you to deal with that.

    Spoiler warning for S2 -
    The tone of S2 was also different because it was a 'bridge season'. S1 was the story of Good Omens novel, but has some differences such as Gabriel who is not in the book. Terry and Neil plotted out a sequel. Neil has said that S2 was the connecting series to put everything in place to be able to tell the Sequel as he and Terry planned it. S2 neatly removes additional characters like Gabriel to bring it back to whatever is needed for their sequel.
    I did miss some of the things in S1 like the narration, the additional cast and points of view (Newton, Adam, Anathaema, Shadwell etc) and so the pacing was different but otherwise enjoyable. And not enough Queen music ;)
    And those who are hating on Aziraphale for not acting as they wanted or expected; really have missed Aziraphale's beliefs and behaviours in S1 - look how long he keeps believing that Heaven is good and just all through S1 with him slowly losing faith throughout S1 and learning that both factions are equally bad just in different ways. Right up to the day of the Apocalypse he is expecting Heaven to do something to stop it. He worries Hell will destroy Crowley for working with him, but never once thinks Heaven would be callous enough to do the same to him. S2 he has lost a lot of his purpose; doing good deeds, helping people because he's adrift, an outcast. Crowley is happiest on Earth, not needing to do bad deeds for hell, just existing. He always knew it didn't matter who did the good or the bad as long as it was done and once cast out as being a traitor he was free from the shackles and able to just be with Aziraphale without hiding them being around each other.
    But for Aziraphale, to go back and take Crowley with him? Its an obvious decision to him - especially because Crowley would be there too. I think he tends to forget that all Crowley's experiences/life as a Demon is what made Crowley who he is and the being Aziraphale knows - not Crowley's time as an angel. (that he's known Crowley longer as a Demon than an Angel.)
    Just my thoughts and observations :) But seriously; angst and drama are the key of any storyline and character development so its all good. I've always found a sad ending sticks with me longer than a happy ending anyway AND we aren't finished yet assuming S3 is made.

    • @talistheintrovert

      it would DEFINITELY be nice to have more queen music and more old cast appearances in season 3 but I will take what I can get lol!!
      and I agree with so much of what you wrote here, especially about angst being a key part of any story and sad endings sticking with you longer - sad endings are only bad to me when they're unsatisfyingly sad, like they don't wrap things up or they "subvert" things just to shock me. Maybe write a fanfiction till then, or rant to your best friend about it and make them watch it. Make art or watch edits. Don't bother Neil with it. Imagine if Neil ended the show without them having a falling out or at least a reaction or expositor of the intricacies of their dinamic throughout the series would have been an insult to how complicated there characters and relationship is. They needed this, they needed to have this falling out. Because now all the cards are exposed for season three and we get some good old angst. That is what fanfic is for: YOU doing something about the plot-parts you did not agree with (and create your own parallel universe).
      Like the question to David Tennant: "If Doctor Who exists in the Good Omens Universe, who on earth is playing the 10th Doctor there?" - Well in my opinion it must be a bored Crowley (give-away phrase at the beginning of 10th's regeneration: "Is my hair GINGER?... Awww, I wanted it to be ginger!"). The book of Good Omens was written in the summer 1989 - so Adam becomes 11 in August of the year 2000 - like the old prophecy of the world ending in the year two-thousend and... (something about the fact that Jesus might have been born in the year 7 B.C. - BUT Gaius Julius Ceasar - a proper historical figure - was born in July 100 B.C. as a FACT) - The 2nd season of Good Omens is said to play out 4 or 5 years after season 1 - so we have 2004 / 2005 - New Who hasn't even started yet, OR Christopher Ecclestone has made such a good impression that the world is yearning for more Who-stuff! Eighter way - Crowley has lost all his purpose in existence and might be in need of a time-machine to fix his love-life. What better way, then to invest ones energy into a show about time-travel - you sneek up on Russel T Davies with his 'Love Life of Casanova' and take Doctor Who from there - Poor Christopher Ecclestone who was miracled out of the show by all the shit happening behind sceens - just to make way for Crowley to take the Doctor's place and distract himself from the loss he had suffered.
      OR - like Terry Pratchett obeseved in one of his stories (about the Watch and some fanatical dwarfs, who get consumed by a shadow entity: they were still at the stage of "when will SOMEONE do something about it" and had not yet reached the "what will I do?" level of events) - if you don't like it: leave it - or bend it to your likings!

      I'm not harassing Neil, but I didn't like the season. Not because they didn't get together, but because I feel like when held up against the novel/season 1 the writing was strikingly bad and the characterization was quite off. Crowley was a fun, charming wildcard in Good Omens 1. In Good Omens two, he's a hapless grump that can't figure out a way to not live in his car? S1 Aziraphale is a little eccentric, and too optimistic for his own good, but he's also smart and pragmatic. In S2 he's a saccharine fool that doesn't have the sense to not be trying to play cupid for strangers while a mob of demons are milling around outside of his bookshop?
      So, yeah, nobody should be inboxing Neil on that, but I think there are very legitimate criticisms of the new season happening.

      I enjoyed Season 2 a lot. I liked some of the questions it was asking and challenges to the hierarchal view of the upstairs and downstairs of that world and I'll be frank the theology it's based on, so much. I do agree characters got a little derailed to meet those discussions. I even like that Nina and Maggie are one in the eye for the toxicity in shipping real people.
      I am not emotionally married to Gaiman's cultural idol or Prachett's as many are so maybe my expectations are less. I felt like the season was about challenging any gaps in the worldbuilding from the book and previous series and giving a few crumbs towards Arizaphale and Crowley been eternal life partners. As a last rambly thought I really like the end. Because there are way too many real life couples where that happens. Where one decides their lifestyle and ethics has more weight than the other person/persons. And that's toxic as hell (pun intended) and very much something an Angel of myth and this worldbuilding would do.

    As you touched on briefly in the video, Zira is a victim of religious trauma as I thought about it more it really is true! Crowley calls him out on it in season 1. And Zira, (like any cult victim) defends it. And when the metronome comes in like a cult leader buttering him up saying “he is such a good leader” and “tells the angels what they need to hear” to drive a wench between him and Crowley, who is an atheist, to Zira’s religious trauma

      To me this show is a commentary on how religious trauma and how it affects atheists vs people who refuse to admit their trauma. Or like people who got out of a cult vs people still in it. Crowley sees things for how they are and Zira doesn’t want to. Even though he would admit Heaven made him do pretty heinous things. And to add insult to injury the Angels don’t see him as “one of them”. Which makes him more lonely and more drawn to Crowley.

    • @BigFun-yg5qs
      @BigFun-yg5qs ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think season 3 will see Zira learn to be more human and learn empathy. Because of the angels act, Zira doesn’t understand human suffering and can only see right and wrong. Digging up a body is “wrong” poverty is “right” and “make you a better”

    This type of overstepping and boundary breaking has also been an issue in the recent “Welcome Home” project fandom. It’s extremely uncomfortable that some people don’t know how to respect boundaries towards the creator/actors. Creators, actors, writers, artists are PEOPLE and aren’t entitled to uphold your wishes. It’s their story and characters.

    I loved the ending of S2, I loved it! The sadness of it, the impact it had on me was something I hadn't felt in a long time, it was very special. And it made me excited for all fan projects that will follow from this season, especially the couple that I've seen so far. I just watched a new animatic for a follow up scenario from S2 that uses the HTTYD audio "you're as beautiful as the day I lost you" involving the reunion between Crowley and Azi and I squealed! It showed me that, had S2 ended so peacefully, entire years worth of passionate projects wouldn't be born, as I know they will be now. Because of this heartfelt ending, because of the beautiful heartbreaks, people will feel that and will translate that into new forms of artwork. Fics, animations, animatics, songs, pictures, all of it; and it will all be so wonderful. I want Neil to know that there are those in his audience that have his back, and I mourn for the mad members of our community who don't understand or care for what damage they're causing. I believe in Gaiman, and I trust he knows what he's doing!

  • @LokiStarOmen
    @LokiStarOmen ปีที่แล้ว +40

    I can’t believe so many people have been so terrible to him because of Season 2, what the hell?! I absolutely adore Good Omens. I often listen to the audiobook when I’m heading to bed. I fell in love with the series and although Season 2 was lower stakes I always figured that it was supposed to be setting up to what was to happen in the final season since a second coming or even the eventual war heaven and hell would wage against Earth together (as Crowley mentioned at the end of season 1) is not something you can sufficiently build up to and then have a climax to within a six episode season, even if those episodes are an hour or so long. And I agree wholeheartedly, the cliffhanger thing kinda sucks but it does so in a good way, because it’s painful to wait and see what happens to these characters we know and love, but that means they didn’t end the season with me hating or no longer caring for the characters. The wait will be worth it. I love the second season for different but similar reasons to the first. I am so used to being burned by shows for hoping that an lgbt ship will actually come out, so I kept ignoring all the signs of what was coming and was in complete denial that it would happen right up to Crowley kissing Aziraphale and then I just lost it. I loved it, it broke my heart. I felt bad for them both that they had a bad first kiss, one that breached consent (I bet that Crowley will be apologising for that in season 3) but I loved that it happened and it happened because Crowley felt like it was the only thing he could do. I cried for two hours after the episode ended and I loved the whole thing.
    Some people need to calm their tits and get over the fact that it’s simply good writing when your setting up the next season.

Like I was reading some of them and I'm just like dude. I think some of them are perhaps just a bit younger and maybe don't understand "fandom culture". I think the season was very well written and people genuinely couldn't get their heads around the idea that this is not the end for these characters. Wrote the above then finished the video. Excellent balance of directness and sensitivity to what’s human and empathetic in the behavior you’re addressing here.
    I’m not on social media at all, other than YT (which, I understand from my kids, makes me a bit yikes?) so I was surprised (and not surprised on reflection) to learn that a vocal segment of the fandom didn’t see “the kiss” and the ending moments of GO2 as simply….well, exactly what you just described so succinctly. The conventions of storytelling were so clearly honored, the story so clearly signaling what it was up to in those scenes, and you’ve explained it all so kindly and accessibly. I’m hoping that at least some of your audience will come away from this video feeling a little better, and perhaps, slightly sheepish, and even, willing to make apologies to Mr Gaiman if their recent posting warrants it. Because we all would live in a less wonderful world without his talents and willingness to share, right?

    The crazy thing is viewers want to get what they want now--even when it means that there's no hope of doing what needs to be done later. They want the happy ending from the beginning on. Which is insane. "Give me my resolution, and then some more of my resolution, and still more of my resolution! Give me celebrations at Gondor, and spare me both the trip through Mordor and the sadness at the Grey Havens."
    That's not a story. So we are sad now--and may even be sad in the end. But neither overrules getting happy in the crucial moments. I just want Aziraphale and Crowley to get to explore loving each other, and to be happy together. I am willing to put up with sadness along the way, as Neil tells the story he and Terry dreamed of.

    As much as the finale devastated me at the ripe time of 5am and basically going "what the fuck?", I love the ending. I loved it then and I still love it now, and having allowing it to digest, as you say, it was basically the best way to end it. I don't want fluffy rainbows for an ending, at least not until the END END! It was also in-character. 6000 years of not talking? Yeah, 2 lesbians kicking you up the backside isn't going to suddenly fix that. They continued to STILL not talk, opening up the door perfectly for a s3 to sort their shit out. Aziraphale has always felt out of place, only dipping his feet into the grey whereas Crowley swam in it.
    And really... I can't blame Aziraphale for wanting to change things for everyone's sake. He's just too good, and yes, I still want to wring his neck, but I GET IT! He's still got a lot of learning to do, and he's certainly not ready to take the plunge yet with Crowley as a lover. As insane as it sounds, he needs more time. 6000ish years after they met, he only THEN fell in love, AND told Crowley to slow down. He is not ready. The kiss was great, but it was also kind of a bad move on Crowley's part, i.e moving too fast. Again, more talking might have worked, but they're hopeless at that, and that's why the ending was got exists.
    In short, don't fucking send hate mail to anyone. The people that do, and have, are incrediably sensitive, immature, and pathetic, and I hope some form of karma comes their way, because this season was great, and I need that s3 to see how the story unfolds.

    Great video! I think it's absolutely ridiculous that a portion of the fandom is harassing Neil on this.
    These people seem to have forgotten that we're not entitled to a new season - the fact that we have a new season is absolutely godsent. Yes it did end with a cliffhanger and it didn't give us the ending that we had in our minds (yet, hopefully) but it was so well written and there was so much love and effort put into it. The fact that there's a 3rd season makes me so happy (Subtext: You mean fans who were initially left giddy after season 1 gets 2 extra seasons under Neil Gaiman's watch? Big win for us!). I think it's extremely disrespectful and ungrateful of people to hate on the new season just because it didn't deliver instant gratification - Neil has no obligation to fulfil that, and if Aziraphale and Crowley could wait for 6,000 years, why can't you?
    I personally wasn't that hyped over the kiss scene for the same reasons you mentioned (side note - I rationalised it as how else would Crowley get the message across to Aziraphale? Kissing may be out of character but in my opinion, Crowley expressing his feelings verbally would be more out of character - would love to hear your take on this) but I respect and trust Neil's decision to put this scene in, just as much as how he had decided to end season 2 on a cliffhanger and that greater things await in season 3.

    I haven’t read the book(s) but Good Omens 2 was fabulous TV. The nerdy Bible lore, triple love duos, the acting, oh god the acting and the chemistry between the leads… my partner and I were both leaking happysadjuice as the credits rolled.

    In my experience a large amount of people either don’t like an ending because 1. the ending actually was badly written or 2. the ending was just sad. I haven’t seen season 2 but I am wondering if it is just option 2 (wait, it’s not even the actual ending either?-).
    Also thank you for saying about them being genderless and not cis men.
    And from another aroace person, I call not erasure too. It feels like some people seem to think all ace people are incapable of doing anything vaguely romantic or sexual.

    As an avid angst enjoyed, I liked the ending conflict and the stepping stone it is towards a great last season/book. I never understand when people go after the authors/creators for something they don't like 🙄 Gaiman made everyone need therapy, and I absolutely love it 😂❤

    Wait, what? I wish I didn't know that. Not that I regret watching your video, it was interesting to hear your thoughts, but I wish I didn't know people were being so awful. Also, I am on the ace spectrum and I totally agree with you on the kiss. I hope we get a proper romantic kiss next season.

      @@talistheintrovert No worries. I guess it was to be expected. Sometimes I still think that when a show is funny and wholesome it can't possibly have fans behaving badly, but that's just wishful thinking. Yes, the ending was sad but also beautiful, and it leaves so many fascinating options open for S3 (provided we will get more seasons).
