  • Another great track from Pink Floyd. I honestly think this one may be my favourite so far. One thing we always know with Pink Floyd is that all of their music tells as story, even if it doesn't have that many words. Here's my first time hearing Pink Floyd - Shine On You Crazy Diamond.

Watching younger people getting turned on to Floyd makes me wish I could go back and hear it for the first time all over again. But on the other hand, I’ve heard these songs so many times that they just feel like and old friend come to call. Breathtaking, is it not?

This song was written for Syd Barrett, one of original band members that they had to leave behind due to drug problems and mental problems. They never forgot him and this shows that. Not only were these guys musical geniuses but their lyrics are always pretty deep. Longtime PF fan here and glad to see you enjoy and grow in great music. Great review, always like seeing the faces of the younger generations when they hear this band and especially this masterpiece of a song! Looking forward to next review!

@@keiththompson8922I'm not sure it was this particular song, the way I heard it Syd came to the studio when they were recording and guys didn't recognize him at first, he was basically a shell of the man he used to be, his eyes were hollow as black holes which shocked them the most among other changes. They were shocked and wrote this song dedicated to him.

@@user-pm3wk6lw6mthat’s the story I heard on an interview with David Gilmour. “You reached for the secret too soon, you cried for the moon
      Shine on you crazy diamond
Threatened by shadows at night, and exposed in the light
      Shine on you crazy diamond”
…the lyrics pretty much summed up Syd’s state of mind when he left the band, and didn’t improve after he left. He took to painting apparently

Never apologize for getting lost in the vibe and taken away by Pink Floyd. That is exactly what us Floyd fans come for and hope to see. You are discovering that time loses all meaning when listening to Pink Floyd. Whether 10, 15, or 20 minutes, Floyd will take you on a musical journey and leave you a little disoriented but oh so satisfied at the end.
Suggest "Dogs" from their 'Animals' album next. All 17+ minutes of it.
    Good job!! 👍👍

This song was written years after the song’s subject, their original singer, lost his mind due to Schizophrenia and lots of LSD. He went home and lived with his parents, significantly disabled, for many decades to come until he died. The craziest thing is, he randomly turned up at the studio, years after anyone had seen him, confused, weird and almost unrecognisable - literally while they were recording this song about him…. Talk about a mindfuck

David Gilmore doesn't just play guitar, he somehow manages to put his very heart and sould and lifes blood into his performance. This whole album was a tribute to their early bandmate Syd Barret who succombed to the pressures of stardom and drugs to become completely detached from reality. Strangly enough he showed up in studio while they were recording and none of his bandmates recognized him for a while until he started asking where his guitar was.

I’m 50 and my father bought this album on its release as I was just a toddler.
As soon as I was reliable enough to play it on my own, I played it over and over, and I must have heard it hundreds if not thousands of times, knowing it by heart, every note of every instrument, even every scratch on the LP.
My father has passed since, decades ago. The original LP was lost or stolen at my mother‘s, but I’ve had digital versions of it.
And still, each time I listen to it (maybe once a week, maybe more), goosebumps and tears.

Wish You Were Here is my favourite Pink Floyd album. Every song on it is famous. And SOYCD is, in my opinion, one of the best things ever recorded. It's often written that it was dedicated directly to Syd Barrett, but all the members deny it. Roger Waters says in an interview that it was inspired by the story of their friend and founder of Pink Floyd.
I don't know if anyone has written this before, but I must mention a well-known story connected to this recording: when Pink Floyd recorded this track at Abbey Road studios in London on June 5, 1975, Syd Barrett had not been with them for over seven years. In the middle of the recording, a chubby, balding, eyebrowless guy appeared in the studio, wearing canvas pants and a tank top and holding a plastic bag. At first no one paid him any attention, but after a while David Gilmour says: "For God's sake, do you know who that is?". No one recognized him. "It's Syd!" He's changed so much in that time (to give you an idea - Syd used to be an incredibly handsome dashing and vital young man). Everyone was taken aback and couldn't believe it. They exchanged just a few sentences and then he left without saying goodbye. Roger and David burst into tears.
Here on TH-cam are some videos in which they remember Syd (not only Pink Floyd). It's interesting to watch them just to get an idea of what a great musician, performer, composer and musical experimenter he was. It's speculation, of course, but in reality he may have been a megastar...

Us Floydians' are a big family and we like nothing more than to watch other people, young and old, discover, in my opinion, the best band ever. You're digging a bit deeper now, and i hope you realise this is a one way ticket😉 it's onwards and upwards from here with so much more great music to listen to and enjoy. Another great reaction✌

Try 'Run like hell' from the Pulse concert. The beginning is special with David making such great guitar sounds, and then the violent ending. Such a great song. My friend told me 'you are very patient' when listening to Floyd. You have to be-they give you such incredible stories and sounds and the buildups in the beginning, their solos, their long and drawn out songs ARE what make them so special.

Seen Floyd many times over the decades and its always a treat. I just hate that so many reactors who are now experiencing the music of these bands dont really have a shot to see them anymore. If they do come around tickets will not be cheap for these bands. Anyway, that is the album cover for Wish You Were Here, they have 2 versions ofthe cover. I have them both on vinyl.

I've just stumbled on your channel. I get a real buzz out of watching youngsters react to Floyd, the band I grew up listening to. Most are positive and for good reason, they understand the musical and lyrical quality entering their brain and soul. I see from your reaction that you get it man. Get on board the Floyd train, it's so good for the soul. Good luck with your channel amigo. 🌻🙏

When I listen to this song... so do my neighbors... without complaint.
Songs like this made them my top favorite band .... since I was a child in 1968.
I'm 60 now and still consider them my band

I was born in 1960, so i heard all these great songs when they came out, your first time reactions brings me back and is fun to watch, now seeing you not want to comment during the song is normal and the thing to do, the music is so good, to stop and commment is unbalansing the rythm of the song, it's great that now youre reacting at the end, I enjoy watching your face reactions during the songs, and some comments without stopping, yes, 70's music is the best, enjoy.

Don't think in terms of "introduction " and verses and such. This is a rock symphony in movements. Each section is meant to be equally significant as part of the larger work. And this song is part of the larger cohesive work of "Wish You Were Here."

Pink Floyd's music creates an atmosphere to lose yourself in. Lots of nice layers and build up. I would lay back in my bean bag share with my head phones and travel. I feel so luck to have grown up with this music. If you do more research, you find that this song is about their founding band mate Syd Barrett that did too many drugs and had a mental break. Check out "See Emily Play" and "Arnold Layne" as very early songs.

I just found your channel and your reaction to my favorite Pink Floyd song ever was so satisfying. Watching you take the journey with the song was like hearing it for the first time all over again. Who needs lyrics with that guitar? And when the lyrics do begin, oh my. What a wonderful tribute to Syd.

Great that the younger generation are getting into this type of classical rock music, where artist were given time by the music industry execs to express themselves. Much better than the dross of today, where music has to deliver the hook in less than a minute and the song lasting no more than three. Pink Floyd are fantastic, but only one of a multitude of amazing band from the sixties and seventies.

If you really want to watch a movie/music video while hearing this song, watch Pink Floyd Pulse - Shine On You Crazy Diamond. Pulse is a live album and was recorded on video. Every song in that concert has a little movie playing in the background of the performance. The entire concert is nothing less of epic

Parts 1-5 open the album Wish You Were Here. Parts 6-9 close it out. Pink Floyd always released albums meant to be consumed as a whole and not track by track. Each album tells a story.
