OK.....Unfortunately I had to add this link because of the great number of misinformed viewers that never heard of outward opening doors. The link below explains it all. www.mcgarryandmadsen.com/inspection/Blog/Entries/2017/1/8_Should_a_front_door_open_in_or_out.html
I'm in Australia, never seen a home with an outswing entry door here. Thanks for the link. Nice mod for nothing but a little time and effort. I install such devices, and I would never have thought of this. Hingebolts we call them.
I worked in warehousing (import/export) and plenty of the doors were outswing doors. I now work in telecommunications and guess what...all outswing doors. Many businesses have outswinging style doors. You just have to look.
By law (code), restaurants must have an outward opening door in case of fire, etc. This is a great application for extra security. Thanks for the video
very helpful. most home invasions are from kicking in the front or back door that opens inward, the down side is the outward door has accessible hinges which you solved with a very clever solution thank you.

Me as well. I had thought about buying expensive outward security hinges with the pin but this will work for a relative who lives alone and has a outward opening door. While it is secured with a fancy double key dead bolt high end the hinges are the weakness. This will also make me use my depot gift card finally to get the pins and other knick knacks. Thumbs up.
House was built 2018 with a out swinging door. Definitely know about that and was wondering why that would be ok in this day and time but a great hack I will install today. Thank you!
They make hinges for out swinging doors that have a screw that goes into the hinge pin that is only accessible when the door is open. It prevents the pin from being removed until the screw is removed.
Thanks for this Video. I just followed your guide and it worked well. If I could add two tips: 1 - Do one hinge at a time and make sure it works before moving on to the next one. Chances are that at least on one of them it will have friction and this way it will be easier to diagnose 2 - if you have friction, instead of moving to a larger diameter bit, enlarge the hole horizontally by moving the drill side to side (not up and down since the issue is probably down to the angle of attack)
Thank you. I have to install a new door that swings out, because the tiny landing is situated so you can't bring anything into the basement. If i install with door opening out, I will have access to the downstairs staircase, as well as the upstairs staircase going into kitchen. I was thinking had to get a special hinge set,, but this trick 👌

This is a great hack. Ottawa police taught me that one, after we had a break-in. Only difference was they called for #10 wood screws, instead of the steel pins. Holes in the hinges were just slightly larger then the screws.

most doors have 3 hinges. i just unscrew the hinge plate from the door and drill both holes at once then put the screws back in and drive in the roll pin
i'm not sure what you mean by hinge plate but i was thinking of removing the hinge and drilling once thru both "wings" and maybe installing a set screw but of course that would involve tapping the hole to the right thread. i may try using the tension pin on a scrap piece of wood before i drill into the door itself.

I see videos all the time claiming that hinges on the outside without added security enable someone to open or remove the door by simply popping out the hinge pins. Yet, I've never seen a video where they actually do open the door that way. Try it sometime. It's very difficult at best, if not impossible. Sure, you can get a crowbar or a reciprocating saw or something like that and manage to get the door open that way, but you would essentially ruin the door and/or hinges in the process, and it would still take some time. You could probably open it on the latch side about as easily if you have the tools and strength. The point is, your average burglar is not going to be any more successful with opening a locked door with the hinges on the outside. The problem is the barrel of the hinge the part you drop the pins through is wide enough that the door itself will not slip past the part of the hinge still screwed onto the jamb. Unless you have a really sloppy fit, you just can't move the door toward the latch side enough to get it open on the hinge side. As a matter of fact, hinges on the outside might actually be less burglar prone than doors that swing in. A person could likely kick in a door that opens inward. You're very unlikely to kick in a door that opens toward you.
You can easily pop hinges . Then take a pry bar on that side. Then slide the door and you in. When I do flooring I remove doors to do the floor. Takes less than a minute..
You might have a valid point HOWEVER some people have French doors (two single doors facing each other) and they will easily pop off because the center of the two doors have no reinforced.
Incorrect. Many doors have them on the outside, and most modern doors have security hinges. I can kick in an inward opening door in seconds, good luck kicking in an outward opening door.
First off, I wasn't knocking your workaround, and I also don't think the poster Inspirational was either so I'm not sure where your hostility comes from. Truth is it's a decent hack however using a solid pin would be better IMHO. The point I and I think Inspironator were making is that the vast majority of residential doors open inward protecting the hinges from any external tampering. I have installed at least 45-50 doors in my time and the only time I see door's that have hinges on the outside were on mobile homes and trailers. Not once on a residential house in SoCal.
Bill Kenny First of all, there is no hostility, except from a very small number of my viewers. Second, you need to read my "Pinned" comment. Third, So CA isn't So FL. Lastly, the hardened tension pin is more than adequate for the job.
Would be more accurate (less risky) to remove each hinge, one at a time, drill one hole, and then match up that hole to the opposite side, to make sure hole centers are aligned. Otherwise, great idea.
I'm trying to think of a reason anyone would ever want to have the doors open outward and have outside hinges. Maybe for hurricane areas since it would be harder to push the door in if installed that way?
Very common with businesses, especially those using steel exterior doors. Just be aware of any business you go to if you are pulling the door open vs pushing. You'll realize it's pretty common.
I’ve never seen a residential home with a out swing. What keep the water from coming in? The seal is on the inside. Seems like the water would run in around the door and come in through the latching mechanism.

Those types of pins are used in the auto industry to keep the axles in place These are very strong.
Would be more accurate (less risky) to remove each hinge, one at a time, drill one hole, and then match up that hole to the opposite side, to make sure hole centers are aligned. Otherwise, great idea.

@@electronicsNmore I bet you’ve had some questions that make you wonder if the person you’re trying to explain things to is even on the right page.
where in the world did you find an exterior door, with exterior hinges ..?? who would buy such ridiculous crap ..??
If someone installs an exterior door with the hinges outside then they did it completely wrong.
exactly ... bwaaaahahaha .. hire cheep help, get a cheep job :)
I agree, hinges should never be on the outside (secure side) of a door.
I'm trying to think of a reason anyone would ever want to have the doors open outward and have outside hinges. Maybe for hurricane areas since it would be harder to push the door in if installed that way?
it's the "wrong handed Door" quite obviates, except to the numnut that installed it .. hilarious
Who has an out swing exterior door, the hinges should be on the inside not the out.
I guess you haven't been to many other places in the world, it's very common, especially in hurricane prone areas.
@@atvridgerunner The threshold has a seal.
I know that but there no seal around the top or sides. You would never have a out swing unless it’s under a 8’ covered porch
