Have used the Z50 for a few years. The sensor is great. The kit lenses DX 16-50 and 50-250 are surprisingly sharp and have built-in image stabilization. The full-frame Z 24-200 and 105 micro both have image stabilization and get extra range on this small body. I have owned and used a variety of NIKON DSLR/lenses, including the 850; the Z-lenses in equivalent price ranges are sharper; if you already have DSLR lenses, you can buy a F to Z adapter; the DX 16-80 f/2.8 is image-stabilized and has great optics. I own the Zf, which has superb IBIS, but it costs twice as much as the Z50 and is bigger/heavier. The Z50 is an excellent travel camera. Not convinced the upgrade is worthwhile for me. If this is your first venture into the Z system, I'd suggest getting a used Z50 with both the DX 16-50 and DX 50-250 kit lenses; there are plenty available at Keh, Adorama, B&H, EBay etc and you'll save a few hundred $.
@pilotdog68 Don't sweat it. I owned the D500 and this is the best crop sensor I've ever used.

I bought the Z50 two months ago (my first ever interchangeable lens camera), somewhat hesitating that I should wait for the already rumored Z50 II. Well, I don't mind at all. In those two months I had a lots of fun with the camera, made amazing pictures, and certainly saved a bit of money. Sure, the more advanced subject detection would be nice, as well as the flippy screen for times when i shoot in vertical, close to the ground. But it's still an amazing tool, I have zero regrets on not waiting for the II
Agreed. The Z50 is a great, and I think, underrated camera. It’s good that Nikon is improving it, but for photography, this feels more like a bump than a whole new version.
Why you selected such crippled mount that clearly only favours FF cameras? :D

@@xmeda I didn't want to go fullframe right away. This one seemed to be a great opportunity to experience these kind of systems, and see if i liked it, and maybe figure out what features are missing for me, if any. My previous camera was a Lumix FZ-82 so it's a huge upgrade. I bought the 24-200 lens, and just a few days ago the 105 macro, both of them will work perfectly in case i go FF. Nikon seemed to be a great option. Fuji cameras felt really uncomfortable in my hands, i don't like Canon as a brand, and Sony is really expensive. I'll see if i can earn some money with my skills, and maybe i'll switch to FF when the Z50 is the limiting factor. Also, i like to hike, ride MTB so a smaller lighter camera is a plus.
If you want stable get an action camera, it kills everything else for half this price. Ibis is overrated. Before ibis everyone complained about af, then 1 card slot. People love to complain about something they will never purchase.
@@barryobrien1890 Ibis is overrated? So you have no idea. All my Pentax bodies since 2006 had IBIS. It is absolute standard. And all my Olympus cameras have it also. EM5III can easily do 2 sec wideangle nightshots without any tripod just from hand. Plenty of fast lenses have zero stabilization due to element physics. IBIS solves that. There is no reason to omit such thing. Even the cheapest tiny Olympus EPL line has it.
@xmeda all depends on the use case. Sony released the Fx30 and Canon the R5c as video centric hybrid cameras without ibis. Obviously these very successful camera companies did not seek your armchair advice. The new age hybrid shooters or content creators that Nikon calls them, are looking to update their game on the video side for their social media and photography ibis is pretty bad for video compared to a gymbal. If Nikon is targeting users that want to shoot 10 bit log and color grade, that's their choice. Obviously Pentax and Olympus have learned from your advice and become wildly sucessful
@@xmeda so you're saying we shouldn't be shooting on ARRI Alexas or Sony Venice systems then? Not even RED or Blackmagic? Canon C series? None of those have IBIS. I wonder why?
It's an update at least. 😅 I'll be curious to see if the Z30 is updated as well. Though, my hope for something closer to a Nikon version of the Sony FX30 rather than a physically cut down version of the Z50ii is pretty much nil. 2 hour record limit, no ibis, single card slot, smaller battery... etc.
Thank you gents, interesting introductory video. I hope you will get a chance to do a in depth testing and present the results of your professional analysis. Usually APSC entry level cameras don't get that much investigative attention. Keep up the good work.
Really wish this had IBIS, I this might be a good entry level into the Nikon ecosystem (or perhaps a used/refurb Z50 Mark I?) I really do hope that a crop sensor IBIS camera comes out from Nikon though, had hoped this would be the one that would come with it... With the Nikon Z5 costing around 1000 dollars direct from Nikon these days and having a FF sensor, 24 mega pixels, IBIS, Dual UHS-II slots, what is the arguement for the Z50 II?
I own the Z5 and the Z30 and video has way better quality on the Z5, even being more constricted and limited. If you can get past the 1.7X crop with video is really nice. IBIS is a must in my opinion for handheld video, because the Z30 is jittery.
This has me definitely hoping for Nikon Z fc II! Nikon's on a roll. Hopefully they make higher range of APSC cameras too, a Z60 or Z70 would be interesting, as well as more primes and zooms! 18-33mm f2 zoom would be a dream.
I was waiting for the Z50 II as i loved my Z5 but hated the size and weight. Got a Fujifilm X-S20 instead. If the Z50II would have IBIS I would switch back to Nikon. But like this, no thank you
I love that these companies are cranking out shareable community LUTs and recipes as a feature now. I imagine it's wayyy too complicated for most people buying Fujifilm cameras to bother with though. Fuji recipes are just picking probably classic chrome, tweaking the contrast and saturation, and twerking the white balance shift. That's easy.
It’s interesting that Nikon and Panasonic are opening profile/recipe ecosystem to users, while Fuji (that is most known for it) keeps it closed and uses it upsell new cameras. I mean you can create own sims, but only in camera and there is easy way to share.
Oh, that was nice to see! Finally the z50 got a af-system that’s not years behind other brands! If it truly has the uhs-II card slot then it would be a really capable camera for everything wildlife, even with the older sensor. They really need to step up their game in regard to lenses or give us those sigma f2.8 zooms that canon recently opened for the rf-mount. Bigger battery’s is also great to hear, I just hope they are downward compatible with the older cameras…
The sensor is a not an issue. The D500 was raved about and that same sensor with more modern processing is just fine. If you want more mp’s go high end full frame. Personally I have always found 20-24 to be plenty. My concern is the camera built any better than the original? I have an original Z6 and the build on that camera is just fine.
Nice review as always however I do love that you get the products early and get the test them out and tell us about them that is amazing and awesome keep doing what you doing and this review has nothing to do with you and just got something to do with the camera I'm not biased towards any camera but I like your reviews and keep going
Yipe, so much of the video in this segment (not just the end) looks flat and murky… was that the camera's fault, or was the light really that bad the whole time?
No IBIS camera shake is pretty evident too. Looks pretty amateurish if that is what they were after to highlight the target audience and expected use of z50ii
Still perfectly happy with my D-500, but have lusted over the 3D Focus Tracking/Eye Tracking (I shoot critters), and this with the F-to-Z adapter might just be my ticket. Thanks!
First of all, Z50 is not a6700 equivalent, rather a6400 equivalent. No IBIS at this price range. Second of all, if you look at 20mpx on a DX, the pixel density is equivalent to 45mpx on FX. There's no need for more mpx. Also, its one of the best DX Nikon sensors ever. I am glad they kept it.
idk. That's like saying less than 4 MP would be enough on an iPhone, because then it would be the same pixel density than on an 45 MP Nikon FF sensor. I don't think it works like that. There is nothing wrong with smaller image sensors having higher pixel densities since smaller formats have different lenses that work better for their regarding formats.
I am traveling to Kamakura this Sunday but I guess I've missed you by a few weeks. There were some interesting black and white photos. Love the night shoot.
I’m sure Nikon knows much more than I do when it comes to what cameras they release, but I think an APS sensor in a Z6iii body with the bigger battery and IBIS priced under $2000 would be fantastic. But they also need a more pro mid range DXZ zoom.
My last camera I bought was the D610 and I want to stay in the full frame world, so any advice if i want to stick with Nikon? Is there something coming out soon that I should wait for if i want to buy a camera in the next ~6 months?
Nice review. Question: When plugged into a computer and used as a webcam, does the new Z50ii get power from and send a video signal through the USB-C cable? The original Z50 does not, but the Z30 does. Thanks
many have written about IBIS, but where is the reduced ISO here? ISO 50 is very necessary when working with high-aperture optics, or when we want to get a longer shutter speed...
Nice but underwhelming. I understand trying to keep the cost down, but Nikon is still badly behind Canon in the APS-C world. I'm waiting for the Z70 or Z500, with IBIS. Price-wise, the Z50-mk2 is comparable to the Canon R10, a $1,000 camera.
@@drchtct They use lenses made for full frame bodies and convince themselves that there is a sweet spot advantage to using only half the image circle. I speak from experience...
@@drchtct TOTALLY agree. Canon historically has been Nikon's competition. But now in the mirrorless world, Fuji and Sony are established, and both Nikon and Canon are playing catch up. Canon and Nikon are both in underdog situations. For cameras: Nikon only has the Z50 and now the Z50-mk2. Sorry, for this, I don't count the Zfc and Z30. - Nikon is missing the mirrorless equivalent of the D7xxx and D500 cameras. Unless their strategy is to push those users to FF. Canon has the R100, R50, R10 and R7. Fuji has the XT30ii, XT50 and XT4 Sony has the A6100, 6400, 6600 and 6700 For lenses: Nikon: The Z lens mount is open to 3rd party. BUT you need a lens with OIS, since the Z50 and Z50ii do not have IBIS. Bummer. This cuts out some of the Z lenses. Canon: Until just recently the R lens mount was closed to 3rd party lens makers, making autofocus lenses. And only the APS-C R mount has been opened, the FF mount is still closed. So if you get an R7, there is NO Sigma RF 70-200/2.8. You either buy the $3,000 Canon RF lens, or adapt an EF lens. And EF lenses have been and are being discontinued by the lens makers, so that is NOT a long term option. So for lenses Canon is definitely behind. I made a comparison chart last year, and it showed how badly both Nikon and Canon APS-C are behind Fuji and Sony for OEM and 3rd party lenses.
@@garyn7067agreed, but the older Sony and Fuji lenses don't stack up that well to the newest mirrorless lenses, so unless you go used, the value of these older lenses is not great. Fuji has excellent glass but it's more expensive than ff glass, so it's really size that you get at the expense of crap af. At least these new Nikon and Canon apsc have Sony level af, and pretty decent kit lenses. It is entry level for these companies. Fuji it's different as they don't offer ff, so it's not a fair comparison
I like it having HLG format. Coming from Z fc I am not sure I should upgrade but it has more video features so that's good if you are looking for that.
This sensor is excellent, one of the best DX sensors on the market still which shows how good it is. Plus, with new processor it's going to be a different performance. Better processors impact image quality as well.
Side flip screen, headphone socket, 10 bit, tally light, product showcase, this is excellent for video. Nikon 16-50 kit lens is better than Sony. Also the Z50 is much nicer to hold/handle than others. Will they bring out an equivalent Z30ii for travellers?
Couple questions I would love you to answer on the podcast if willing. 1. Is the autofocus good enough to use for birds in flight? 2. Is the rolling shutter enough of an issue with the prerelease capture that it isn’t usable for birds in flight? The dream scenario I would use this camera for is to catch birds taking off using the pre release capture, but if the autofocus won’t keep up and the image will be a wavy mess then that won’t really work. Thanks for always reading the comments!

Picture Controls" to me seem to offer nothing new here, except their marketing as a way to compete with Fuji's film emulations. Nikon NX Studio and Nikon cameras already since ages can create profiles and modify them. They can be moved around between cameras via the memory card. In the B&W section, Nikon added Deep Tone Monochrome that reminds me of 120 confection Kodak Tri-X - my favourite. (The 120 confection - 60 mm wide - was used in real medium format cameras and it differed from the emulsion on the 135 confection films.) When I discovered the Deep Tone Monochrome, I copied it to NX Studio and to my Z camera. The grain differs, yes, and that's a matter of raw processing software. But it's not an issue. The gradation out of the box is beautiful. The picture controls are just profiles and in the meantime, Adobe emulates these "camera profiles" with profiles for Adobe Camera Raw too. You can shoot raw (i.e. Bayer colour) and in post convert to Deep Tone Monochrome B&W. Or other profiles. Note that in Adobe, "Adobe Standard" means you use a camera-specific-profile that tries to make all cameras look the same: Adobe flat, Adobe neutral - easily displayed on a 7-bits per channel monitor that emulates 8 bits per channel - with limited colour space. While Adobe Camera Raw is the raw processor for/in both Lightroom Classic (it IS the Develop tab) and Photoshop, its resources are in the Lightroom directories: 1,287 "Adobe Standard" profiles that all try to make your images look the same. If that doesn't work properly, then "the naive" blame cameras and sensors, as they have no clue. It may just be a less successful Adobe profile for your camera (down to firmware version in some cases). Also note that cameras without OLPF shoot much sharper images than cameras with OLPF. You can see - ceteris paribus - the impact of the OLPF when you compare the sharpest F-mount lens in DxOMark when mounted on a D800 (OLPF, 36MP) to mounted on a D800E (OLPF Eliminated, 36MP). At full frame (photosite density), all Nikons under that 36MP have an OLPF, and above, have not. So a 24 MP Z full frame camera has one, but a 20MP APS-C Nikon has not and that's why they shoot comparably sharp images. When we first got cameras offered without OLPF, "we" had to swallow residual Bayer grain. This is just inadequate or failed raw processing as per the Bayer paradigm. Or lazy programming. Shots taken in fairly normal light levels should not have grain. But cameras without OLPF may have grain in darker image zones, low contrast zones, and blurry zones (where, in each case, better raw processing AI is needed to compensate the absence of the OLPF). Nikon have not upped their ante in this respect as in NX Studio we see detail loss, or in other raw processing apps we see better detail recovery, e.g. in the highlights. This can just be a matter of AI of the "learning" (as opposed to pure "algorithmic") type not having been trained enough before it was sent to market. Adobe took until 2023 to come up with improved AI Denoise in their ACR tool, while Topaz (DeNoise AI) was years ahead and DxO (DeepPRIME in PhotoLab and PureRAW) somewhere in between. Pressure from these latter two must have convinced Mudbrick management but the first version had extremely bad demosaicking.
I am not sure I am to impressed with the camera specs but I loved the music track in the image samples section! So essentially, it has the same sensor as my Nikon D7500 and still no IBIS. I'd appreciate an analysis: how signifiant is a Raw shooter need to access the raw when a well thought out (raw+) JPG is available. You pitched this camera as a path to grow to shoot raw, but getting away from shooting only raw is a valid path, especially if the perdominant edits that a raw shooter would make can be anticipated and pre-applied. Perhaps only a handfull of well thought out film modes would suffice in 90%+of the time.
Thanks guys,..a lot of improvements to a good camera, albeit like many noted IBIS, even at a Sony level (OK, not great) would have been a big plus. More than just an incremental upgrade IMO. Older sensor I think is a testament to the fact that any sensor in a camera from the last several years is good enough for most uses. No need to improve further in many cases, so a lot of new features are largely just ways to make the camera be more fun or a better fit for social media uses.

Have used the Z50 for a few years. The sensor is great. The kit lenses DX 16-50 and 50-250 are surprisingly sharp and have built-in image stabilization. The full-frame Z 24-200 and 105 micro both have image stabilization and get extra range on this small body. I've been waiting a while too, but I really thought there would be a sensor upgrade...
🎉
The sensor is not a problem. The lack of IBIS is insane - especially to beginners coming from phones with fantastic stabilization
The kit lens is stabilized. 95% of Z50II buyers will never buy a second lens.
I've got D500 with 200-500 for wildlife photography and Canon R6m2 with EF glasses for video
Keeping my set-up
I got the same wildlife setup..I'm keeping mine as well!
Those are 2 amazing camera bodies from their time.
It's an update at least. 😅 I'll be curious to see if the Z30 is updated as well. Though, my hope for something closer to a Nikon version of the Sony FX30 rather than a physically cut down version of the Z50ii is pretty much nil. 2 hour record limit, no ibis, single card slot, smaller battery... etc.
As usual, excellent video! What hand strap are you using? Cheers to Nikon! Thank you both.
Maybe, hopefully, Z30II
The argument is it cheap
When you like sports or wildlife when you crop Z5 to DX format it has 10 megapixels instead of 21 from Z50. It is significant to some.
Furthermore Z5 has a relatively slow burst rate at 4.5fps compared to 11fps mechanical shutter of this one.
Looks like an illusion of choice in photography industry, eh? 👀
@@macccu olympus is far more liberating tho it's own recipe can't be shared to other users
How about the heat problem? How many hours or photos before the camera shut down because overheat
I don't care what anyone says about it. Good or bad, I want it. I'm betting it's more than capable and would be great as a backup for my z5
I want a small travel & stage camera. Looks like the z50ii is a perfect candidate for that role. The question would be to get this or wait for z5ii?
Yipe, so much of the video in this segment (not just the end) looks flat and murky… was that the camera's fault, or was the light really that bad the whole time?
Looked cloudy and had poor lighting.
No IBIS camera shake is pretty evident too. Looks pretty amateurish if that is what they were after to highlight the target audience and expected use of z50ii
@@alexsolovjovs4380 yah all those non ibis camera (and some with ibis-looking at you Sony) look similar. Really need a gimbal
They say mention that the Z50 II is comparable to a6400 @ 15:09
No its not great bad quality compared to sony sensor
@@ghaah " Great bad quality "¿¿
North American discovers they’re the only ones that say ‘nye con’
Lol
In the UK people are switching from eye-key-ah to e-keh-ah (IKEA). And also Nike, and other stuff. I’d be glad if the US stopped saying nye-kon 😂
Just imagine them saying so-nye for Sony 😂😂😂
Bill Nye con
And zee
Does the built in flash on the z50II trigger remote Nikon flashes?
can you compare the autofocus to the a6400 and r50 and z30
Thank you Jordan for pronouncing the cameras manufacturer names correct!
I like the low light that 20mp sensor brings.
It makes a lot of sense as a back up or someone new to the system, but it’s about time they make a pro APSC body with IBIS.
I am traveling to Kamakura this Sunday but I guess I've missed you by a few weeks. There were some interesting black and white photos. Love the night shoot.
You’ll love it! And you will hit the beautiful colors that hadn’t started for us yet.
The red lut can use some tuning, too much contrast...
Gives me fond memories of my first camera, the Nikon D40. How far we've come!
pretty little camera like a toy but a solid toy
Lol
How do you compare it with FUJIFILM X-M5? Mainly, video capabilities...
Every Time you said Nikon it felt like someone slapped me over the face 😊, Love the review , the Channel and Podcast guys keep up the awesome content.
Behind Canon? You mean behind Sony and Fuji. Do people use Canon APSC cameras? Which lenses do they use lmao
For cameras:
Nikon only has the Z50 and now the Z50-mk2. Sorry, for this, I don't count the Zfc and Z30.
- Nikon is missing the mirrorless equivalent of the D7xxx and D500 cameras. Unless their strategy is to push those users to FF.
Canon has the R100, R50, R10 and R7.
Fuji has the XT30ii, XT50 and XT4
Sony has the A6100, 6400, 6600 and 6700
For lenses:
Nikon: The Z lens mount is open to 3rd party.
So, if you don't care about video but are focused on stills, how does it compare to the Canon R50?
It’s only a small thing, but I like the dedicated button for Picture Control. I hope my Z6iii, Z8 and Z9 get it in a future firmware update.
I like it having HLG format. Coming from Z fc I am not sure I should upgrade but it has more video features so that's good if you are looking for that.
So 5-year old tech is okay??
No, its not, but r10, r50, r7 have the same old sensors from dslrs. Even older than this.
Dude I use a 15 year old cam
Even it's the same old sensor it doesn't mean the materials use is the same, it's different and improved,
This sensor is excellent, one of the best DX sensors on the market still which shows how good it is. Plus, with new processor it's going to be a different performance. Better processors impact image quality as well.
No, it's not okay, we don't buy this camera and Nikon will decide to upgrade this in a year to Z50s MK2 :)... with proper specs.
Is the camera weather resistant?
i wish nikon release the 24-85 f/2.8-4 for Z. great for travel and combined with this body, should be great.
I'd like to see Jordan discuss the Panasonic S9 vs the Nikon ZF for video
Side flip screen, headphone socket, 10 bit, tally light, product showcase, this is excellent for video. Nikon 16-50 kit lens is better than Sony. Also the Z50 is much nicer to hold/handle than others. Will they bring out an equivalent Z30ii for travellers?
Greetings 🙏🙏 any idea when z80/90 shall be coming ???
As a Z50 MK I User, feel free to call the MK II a Fossil with Upgrades. I gave the permission to do so since I own the first generation 🤣
Compelling review. After a decade with IBIS I struggle without it.
P.S. For this displaced Calgarian, I find Kamakura the best place bring visitors to Tokyo. Super for a walk with a camera (or better yet a bike rental).

Kamakura have been cloudy for the past week, I wonder what day you guys filmed on?
I would like to know if the AF is just as fast and reliable as the D500. Shoot collegiate sports so that is probably the thing of most importance to me.
Why not a 12MP APS-C sensor for full pixel 4K readout :(
This does pixel binning for 4K?
ok, so for 4K 30 it's 5.6K oversampled while 4K 60 is cropped to 1.5X for 4K readout.
Sony A6700 and ZV-E10ii are much better when compared, this compares to A6400 specs which is fine for beginners for photography and filmmaking.

Really want one might try and get one when I have some cash. Good informative video!
(The 120 confection - 60 mm wide - was used in real medium format cameras and it differed from the emulsion on the 135 confection films.)
When I discovered the Deep Tone Monochrome, I copied it to NX Studio and to my Z camera.
To better support 3rd party lens, IBIS is a must. A lot of 3rd party lens especially large aperture prime ones are non-VR.
I don't know what's going on just below Chris' right ear at 1.57-ish, but is it real, real but made stronger, or an artefact?
Nikon doesn't sell Zed cameras in the USA, they only sell Zee cameras. :-)

Thanks for video guys 👍
Has it got built-in sensor cleaning? The original didn't have it.
I want a XT30 / XE4 from Nikon. An APSC camera smaller than the ZFC.
I am not sure I am to impressed with the camera specs but I loved the music track in the image samples section! So essentially, it has the same sensor as my Nikon D7500 and still no IBIS. Do you know the EVF refresh rate? Is it still 60 Hz?
