Indeed, but one must be born with ears to hear brilliant musicianship. Instantly, that kit spoke to me...I play the same one and think he keeps his around for good reason:-). Sure would like to hear Carter speak on this.
That's some good honest drumming. No close mic'ing or fancy studio engineering. That's how drums should sound! I wouldn't change a thing, it's perfect. 👍
Carter, you rock! Been a long time fan so I won't even comment anymore on how great the grooves are every time. I will say I'm super impressed by how quickly and stealthily you disengaged and engaged the snares within the groove. Brilliant.
I agree that in most scenarios this is all that's needed, but in the case of an artist like Terry Bozio, and the range of sounds he uses, that added equipment is very useful. For instance, his melodic tuned toms. And in orchestral percussion where many sounds are needed. Skill is not limited by equipment that's for sure, but there's a place for a variety of drums, and especially cymbals.
The buildup and the re-entry back into the beat that starts at 2:41 is so dynamic and violent that it sounds like it was the drum track to a hit Zeppelin song from another dimension. I love it.
Yo Carter, just caught your Drumeo video...man after my own heart! Philosophy so centered to what music is about. Time and groove. FEEL. All I can say is...The Wanton Song...and know you get it!
These is a RODE K2 tube mic right behind my right shoulder you can see it. The one mic thing is nice. It really sounds like what the drummer is hearing. Thanks!!!
Carter you have to do a tutorial: How to tune snares drums! all your snares sound incredibly good. Show us the head tension and the cables tension please. Please we need you advises on tuning drums!
I'm just gonna take a slab of this video and put in on my toast. Seriously though, buttery smooth! Would you mind sharing what cymbals + shells you're using?
I was wondering how you tune your floor toms, top head vs bottom. I have a Ludwig classic maple 14x14 with amb coated top and clear bottom, I love the open sound but can't seem to get rid of that voooom sound when you play a big flam or maybe a ruff. Any suggestions? Love your playing and your sound. Thanks
@@cartermclean my apologies. They sound wonderful and I enjoyed your style. As per the tape on your other kits, any specific reason I'm not trying to offend I'm just looking for an honest answer
Hello Carter, compliments for your drumming, please , can you tell me which hi hat are you using in this video ? I like it a lot, it has a very good sound, Bonham like.Thanks.Roby
Carter, do you wear ear-plugs? Just for curiosity. By the way you are one of the best drummers I've ever listened to. Thank you for your videos, beautiful beautiful music.
Hi carter! Thank's for the groove, I'd like to make clear what sticking are you using on min 03:26. are they subdivied in sevens? RLRKKLLRLRL... I DONT KNOW, HEHE, Greetings from argentina! :-) I folow your work and spirit
+jake Wojcik Yes just a lot of ghost notes from left hand. I usually am thinking of melody lines or bass lines. I just react to those in my head. No licks here really. Thanks!
+carter mclean Very, very cool. You're like a new wave steve gadd, jeff porcaro. They never tried to be too flashy and always got inside of a groove with just tons of feel. Loved your drumeo lesson, picked up a lot.
I hope this guys neighbours realise how lucky they are!
I would break into his house and remove his sound dampening panels
jim hunt it’s possible his walls are soundproofed
Indeed, but one must be born with ears to hear brilliant musicianship. Instantly, that kit spoke to me...I play the same one and think he keeps his around for good reason:-). Sure would like to hear Carter speak on this.
I can imagine, his mother opening the door, time to eat! Admirable playing
Especially at nap time.
This guy has got the best press rolls of any drummer I’ve ever heard. Just otherworldly.
And Art Blakey.
@Connor Pearson great call on Steve Maxwell. I've said it many times

Chase Deery Drumming dad joke....but yeah totally!
That's some good honest drumming. No close mic'ing or fancy studio engineering. That's how drums should sound! I wouldn't change a thing, it's perfect. 👍
Entirely agreed.
8 years later, the grooves just get better. The dude is a groovemachine. The hands, man. I aspire to those freakin hands.
Coated Emperor on batter and fiberskin on front. No hole no pillow.
*very impressive*
Your playing, your drums and how you tune them is always spot on. Such a pleasure to listen!
I listen to this recreationally whenever I need to find the groove. Thanks for posting this!
Love this kit and groove man, so tasteful and an excellent example of how great downbeats can sound with the right heads & tuning. Well done!
Carter, you rock! Been a long time fan so I won't even comment anymore on how great the grooves are every time. I will say I'm super impressed by how quickly and stealthily you disengaged and engaged the snares within the groove. Brilliant.
Awesome drummer, great groove, great sound, great spirit of playing....!!
A drummer should never need more than this size kit to play anything, fantastic stuff,I love small kits 👍🏿
I agree that in most scenarios this is all that's needed, but in the case of an artist like Terry Bozio, and the range of sounds he uses, that added equipment is very useful. For instance, his melodic tuned toms. And in orchestral percussion where many sounds are needed. Who cares what size kit someone uses?
killboybands1 only like 1/3 of drummers and no one else
killboybands1 Nobody, as long as the drummer using it sounds good.
My god these drum sound so amazing! You're playing it killer as always too!!!
Clean, groovy, complex and simple. Dude knows what he is doing.
Love the sound of the drums, especially the bass drum. Your command of the instrument is impressive.
Wish you would do a drum tuning video! Your drums always sound fantastic.
The buildup and the re-entry back into the beat that starts at 2:41 is so dynamic and violent that it sounds like it was the drum track to a hit Zeppelin song from another dimension. I love it.

I really hope this kit is at least 18...
It's a downbeat config, so it's a 20.

That snare is amazing!!!!
Great tuning job...!!! What make/model is it?
1:30 to 1:55 was the best part
Sei un grande complimenti davvero
I'm assuming this is a Ludwig kit and a different snare drum obviously but the one thing standing out is no tape on the toms so what's the?
You don't need to assume its a LUDWIG kit because I say its a 1964 Ludwig Downbeat kit.
@@cartermclean my apologies. They sound wonderful and I enjoyed your style. As per the tape on your other kits, any specific reason I'm not trying to offend I'm just looking for an honest answer
Beatiful
Is that ride a renaissance bounce 22?
Nice ! vibes ! :)
And the hi-hat? 14" K Zildjian something? They sound great!
Stellar

I'm also wondering about the snare. Is that a George Way snare?
That's great! What kind of hats & ride is that?
Carter, what are your thoughts on paiste sound-edge hats? I know you don’t use paiste, but interested in your opinion. Thanks!
Good stuff
Remo Ambassadors on the bass drum as well?
I want to know who your teacher is??? Smooooooth! What size is that crash of doom?

I want to know what your snare drum is???

14x5.5 Craviatto Walnut.
carter could u please tell me which ride u are using? thx :)
Awesome!
From like :50-1:25 what phrasing are you using for the fills. they sound so smooth. Just seems like a lot of ghosted 16th notes with grooving accents.
What setting do you have it on?
Sweet!!👍
IMPRESSIVE!! Pray, do tell me, what is that ride cymbal you're using? Thanks.
22" Zildjian Constantinople med thin low
What camera are you recording with?
Looks like a coated Ambassador, just like the rest of his kit.
