    The Phil Collins version is the happiest drum line I have ever heard. It is blissful and nuanced, positioned next to the concerning subject matter. Making it uplifting from the suffering. The suffering that I always thought was a philosophical view of someone getting pregnant when they were not ready to have a child. Created from pure and beautiful natural love and attraction. I always thought that the drum line would somehow uplift and show the couple to stop worrying, and see the transcendent magic and beauty in the birth. When the song ends, I always felt that the couple would see that.

    • @JimiJamm
      @JimiJamm 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      To be fair, it was a remixed version, as Howard said, that topped the charts. The guy from the label didn't have the context of a finished mix to know.

I never realized how important the 80’s was to me until I got older. Life was just simpler then. 33 years ago just doesn’t see that long ago

    HEY HOWARD! THIS HAS BEEN ONE OF MY TOP 5 ALL TIME FAVORITE SONGS THROUGHOUT MY LIFE! LISTENING TO YOU EXPLAIN WHAT THIS SONGS IS SUPPOSED TO MEAN TO YOU AND HOW YOU CAME TO WRITE IT, I HAD TO CORRECT YOU! YES, I SAID CORRECT YOU! YOU WROTE IT, AND MAYBE YOU THINK WHAT YOU JUST DESCRIBED IS THE MEANING OF THIS SONG? BUT I CAN PROVE TO YOU THIS SONG IS ABOUT "THIS LIFE" AND ABOUT HOW UNFAIR, AND UNJUST IT ALL IS FOR ALL OF US! AND PARTICULARLY WHEN IT COMES TO ROMANTIC LOVE! MOST OF US BELIEVE WE HAVE A SOULMATE! JUST ONE OTHER PERSON OF THE OPPOSITE SEX THAT WE WERE MADE FOR AND THEY FOR US! AND FROM THE MOMENT MOST OF US START DATING, WE ARE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR THIS OTHER HALF! AND THIS SONG COVERS THAT TOO! FOR ME, WHEN I FIRST HEARD IT I KNEW EXACTLY WHAT THIS SONG WAS ABOUT! IT WAS ABOUT MY LIFE! AND HOW NO MATTER HOW I HOPED OR TRIED OR WORKED FOR IT, THINGS JUST USUALLY DONT TURN OUT RIGHT! YOU CAN LOOK AT THE MENU BUT YOU JUST CANT EAT! YOU CAN FEEL THE CUSHIONS BUT YOU CANT HAVE A SEAT! YOURE THE FASTEST RUNNER BUT YOURE NOT ALLOWED TO WIN! YOU CAN FEEL THE PUNISHMENT BUT YOU CANT COMMIT THE SIN! AND YOU WANT HER, AND SHE WANTS YOU, WE WONT TELL A WORD, AND YOU WANT HER AND SHE WANTS YOU, BUT NO ONE, NO ONE, NOOOO ONNNNNNNNNE, IS TO BLAME! : / FOR SOME REASON, YOU CANT BE WITH EACH OTHER! AND ITS JUST NOT RIGHT! BUT THAT IS HOW IT IS! AND IT DOES DRIVE PEOPLE MAD! THIS IS WHY WE ALL NEED JESUS! TO HELP US WITH ALL OF THESE THINGS IN THIS CRAZY LIFE AND TO HELP US SEE AND UNDERSTAND THE TRUTH.. THIS LIFE IS A TEST FOR ALL OF US! THE TEST IS: WHO AMONG GODS CHILDREN WANT TO BE RECONNECTED WITH HIM AND LIVE ACCORDING TO HIS WAYS? OR WHO AMONG US DO NOT? AND JUST WANT TO DO WHATEVER THEY WANT, AND GO ABOUT CREATING ALOT OF PROBLEMS AND HURT TO OTHERS BECAUSE THEY ARE SO SELFISH! AND FOR THOSE OF US WHO DO WANT GOD? WE MUST GO TO JESUS! AND HE WILL EXPLAIN IT ALL TO US! VERY PERSONALLY AND VERY PRIVATELY.. BUT GETTING BACK TO THIS SONG, I LOVE THIS SONG, BECAUSE IT TELLS ME WE ALL FEEL THESE THINGS! WE ALL ARE IN THIS CRAZY TEST CALLED LIFE TOGETHER, AND WE ALL HAVE TO DEAL WITH THIS CRAP! AND YES, ALOT OF TIMES THERE ARE PEOPLE TO BLAME FOR THINGS THAT HAPPEN TO US!

    Great song, and an amazing record. I liked it before Collins did his production. But, lets face it, Phil made it a hit. The record exec was right, as it stood, it was not an A Side. Phil made it pop. He's got a great ear for commercial sensibility. Obviously, Phil added a solid drum track, and some awesome harmonies. But, overlooked was the little theme he added at the top and at the end, brilliantly tying the song together. I personally could've done without the female backup singers, but no big deal. And, as brilliant as the single is, the song stands by itself, as Jones proves every time he performs it by himself on piano.
