    Hi Andy,
Saw this, what the hell was the P51 pilot doing? He was out of position in relation to the B17, wrong height, looks like he had the taps full open, was too tight in the turn, he should have been lower than the B17 and passed under and behind him, instead he cut tail off like a knife through butter, and neither aircraft could recover from such catastrophic collision, the B17 pitched nose down and that was it and the P51 didn’t fare much better. I can only think that maybe something happened to the P51 pilot, because it was obvious something wrong, and you always have an exit strategy if you feel the manoeuvre, is not going to plan, you also have minimum height and safety distances to avoid this. I can’t believe he would deliberately be endangering both aircraft like that.

I suppose the pilot got caught up in the moment enjoying themselves. But because of the speed variables between both aircraft you could argue that pairing them up in the first place is abit odd?

No these displays are regular at airshows, and there are stringent safety rules that apply to this type of flying. I can’t say what happened with the P51, but these pilots have many hours experience, and very few pilots get to fly these types, he could have switched of for a second, something may have distracted him in the cockpit a fault for instance or he had a serious occurrence happen to himself.
      All the very best.

Hello. I saw an F-18 Pilot speculate that the fighter pilot may not have seen the bomber as was concentrating elsewhere. Thats not great SA if so. I guess the FAA Will uncover the truth.

      Hi Andy,
It’s possible, as I said previously it could have been one of a few things, the investigation will shed more light on it, but whatever happened it wasn’t good.

@@alanpearce9665 I watched the footage a few times to see if there was any sign of him trying to roll out of the way.

Well there is only 8 airworthy examples left now. None of which were involved in combat.
I was lucky enough to see one at Bristol Airport in 2014

It was sickening to watch this happen but it’s now been judged that the air boss was at fault by directing the pilots to fly an the same altitude and cross over their respective flight paths they were all flying a dog bone pattern firstly with 500 ft altitude separation and 1000 ft lateral separation , for some reason the air boss chose to get all on the same pattern and at the same altitude .they were all aware of this procedure as it was mentioned at the preflight briefing but no body questioned it? RIP to those that were lost
