I just rode my first longish ride with Pathfinder 42mm on my Diverge. Absolutely fantstic. Mostly the ride was on paved roads but here in Belgium that can (and did) mean pretty much "all terrain". They roll super well on all surfaces from tarmac through concrete to cobbles and the rubbish poorly maintained and rutted tarmac so common here as well as from gravel to dirt/mud. Additional bonus is with tan sidewalls they look really sweet too...

@@crypto_que yeah I guess it can take so.e getting used to, or not even the right style for everyone. 38cm has been the most comfortable for me, but the cowbell does have a small amount of flair in the drops vs hoods

Beautiful build and great choices. Finally a brand with lighter insert options, thanks for the heads up on them. I used to use a Specialized Phenom and loved it but the Shimano Pro Stealth saddle has won me over with its wider nose on the front for getting in those aero positions.

Good to learn about the tubolite inserts! I just learned a few lessons the hard way this past weekend at Dirty South Roubaix! Such as, the value of a frame pump, appropriate pressure to run is higher than 35psi on a 40c set up tubeless, and just how warm the gravel community is when a fellow rider needs some help!

Nice touch with the “Togs” in the drops! I’m not a racer but see your point about aero bars. I also highly recommend a professional fitting and a custom frame for gravel, especially for all day riders. I’m personally doing 5-7 hour rides now and preparing for 6-10 hour rides in the Philippines this summer. I don’t have a power meter but I plan on getting a cadence meter for my Garmin Edge. I really see the advantage of cadence pacing long rides.

I have aero bars on my gravel bike. There is an obvious increase in speed as soon as I lower my upper body into the TT position, a game changer in headwinds. In addition, the TT position gives my hands a rest.

The hoods "sphinx" position is more aero than the drops. Just check out track mass start races, pretty much everyone adopts this position when at the front or alone.

  • @Sator810
    @Sator810 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Another point for clips on bars is you can relax your core much more. When I ride in the drops it destroys my back, regardless of bike or bikefit. But on my last trip with the bike I use it on is stayed on the bars for 90% of the time on a 8 or 9 hour ride where I was pushing it. And afterwards my legs was more tired than my core.

Great video Dylan. It’s always helpful to see what the top riders are using for equipment. I disagree with the use of aero bars for gravel events, however. While the benefits are clear, there are too many racers who lack the skill, judgement or both, to use them safely. I agree that one of the appeals of gravel is the lack of rules, but banning aero bars is one I would support.

Assembling a gravel bike out of a CX-ish frame and various spare parts, I initially put 36cm bars on it which used to be on an old road bike to see how it feels.
Actually feels really fine going quickly on gravel and the position is really similar to my road bike.

I'm not a Durian Rider fan by any means (don't care for him at all actually) but he's right on the steerer tube thing. Several companies were sued last year over high profile steerer tube breakages and they all came back to "improper use of spacers above the stem." There's a reason that plug is in there instead of a star nut. It's to counter the clamping force of the stem. If the plug position is moved relative to the clamping area, it can result in catastrophic failure of the steerer tube.

DJ, would gravel racers be interested in testing the usefulness of a Gravelnacci bar instead of a fullsize aero bar for gravel? The compact size and easy fitting and light weight might have some appeal. I might contact a fabricator engineer contact to make a prototype, if there seems to be any advantage to this equipment type. Bike mfr are so fashion and marketing oriented, that they are slow to change, which makes room for opportunity....

What is the fastest aero rim and tire combination that won't flat on a gentle short gravel course vs rough gravel course? SwissSide, Enve,Zipp have evidently still not actually tested nor manufactured any deep aero wheels compatible for using gravel tire sizes (30c-45c) with optimal aero despite being leaders for road aero design. DJ is on cutting edge with aero rims on gravel. There might be some tire and wheel combos that are faster than others because it is complicated to test aero and gravel at the same time -- wind tunnels are not useful here unlike velodrome bikes. Testing for gravel speed has to be done in field tests, not wind tunnel. Hambini explains local versus global vectors of air. Furthermore the surface roughness and softness is another complication unique to gravel, which in combination with aero is a topic that NOBODY has carefully studied!!!

For Dk, when the goal is to finish at your best, not place in the top 100, but do it with comfort would you encourage those to stick with 650b or look to a 40+ 700c tire?

Hey Dylan, whats your view on Trainer road? I have been following their sweet spot mid volume for about 8 months and am seeing a plateau in FTP. I normally ride about 7 hours a week. I ramp test every 4-5 weeks and hover around 240-250 FTP (weight - 130lbs). Should I just increase training volume instead of intensity because all the races for the next few months have been canceled? Or is a platform like trainer road just not good enough for proper gains?

Question. If i did 4 weeks of training, then a taper followed by a MTB marathon, the week after...restweek or straight into a trainingweek (with maybe an extra restday at the start)?

    Just another reat vid!
    I got a question!
Imagine I wanna have 3*10min hard efford during 4hours of my training...
Should I put 45min recovery time between them or this long recovery time will do sth bad to my intensity section?
    .
Also I plz you to make a vid about 20 hours week training plan... ty

You're using 50/34 and mentioned possibly switching to 52/36. Are your races all very flat that you can pull it off? Where I live I'm using GRX 46/30 with so much climbing and I can't imagine how I'd make it up some climbs on 36. I use 11-34 in the back..

Hi Dylan. I have been in the market for a gravel/cx bike for a while. I really wanted a CX bike but mostly for the geometry. I dont plan on doing too many CX races but I would like to try 1 or 2 CX races. I have the opportunity to buy a brand new Niner RTL RDO with the 2 star build GRX 400. Mrsp is 3000 and I can get it for 2400. I am worried the geometry will feel not as aggreeeive as I would like. My budget was 2k but I am thinking a out jumping on this opportunity.

    Thanks for sharing all this!
About road pedals: aren't road cleats and clipping/unclipping function compromised sometimes by dirt or mud?
I wonder if you'll be using road pedals only in some conditions when you know for sure they'll stay clean, and mountain bike pedals instead during training.

We used to use wheel bearing grease from an auto parts store when racing in the wet.

Nice setup. I particularly like the tires but I'll be racing Rasputitsa in April and will probably need something more mud oriented.

So what is the emergency plan if you do flat on the course? Ditch the tubolight 20 miles from the next stop, and throw a tube in?
