Wow Haunter with red glowing eyes is great. Okay its smile is friendly and i like the known Haunter more. But maybe as more black with red eyes and scarier we can have a new ghost pokemon

I think the reason why a lot of them look like mini versions of the new one is because they wanted the features to be able to make out and be seen sense they were working on a certain pixel scale so they were probably trying to cram in as much as possible along with being displayed in a small screen at the time
Old Voltorb had an indentation underneath them Old Electrode had an indentation at the top of them Further proof that Electrode is really just a Voltorb flipped upside-down.
Obviously they had to work with a certain amount of pixels and space, which is why the old sprites look so squished. In reality the actual designs probably looked quite different! Some look okay, but in a lot of them imho the artist did not do a great job of translating the sprites into a design (wtf was up with that eyeliner rhydon was rocking lol. Or the weird scales on horsey's back). It seems like they took a little too much creative freedom in some places.
5:19 was (in my opinion) One of the best altering. Instead of putting what looked like burn marks and flame-BASED design, they gave it a more horse-like vibe and added actual flames on it's legs. It's old design was still awesome though.
The sprites were always rough though, that’s why having the cards with the games was so meaningful. It let you see what was being represented in the game which let your imagination run wild

Gen 1 Haunter portrays the pokemon with the exact energy of their name.
The original sprites look a lot worse when they have color added to them. They don't look as bad when they're just black and white.
