Sarah, just go over to a sporting goods store like Big 5 and buy a mouthguard. I think they sell them in packs of 2. Very inexpensive. bring it home, put on a pan of very hot water, using a big spoon, dip it in, hold it for a few seconds and the guard will almost turn to a very soft gel, then take it out and quickly insert it over your front teeth, suck hard to form fit, .........voila. Cheaper than the pharmacy. MUCH cheaper than the dentist also. Mostly it just prevents your teeth from grinding. Hope that helps....... Russell D.

It's 83 degrees here in the Houston area and Sunday night the temp will get down to 30 degrees, the first freeze. Temps in the 60's and 70's next week with lows in the upper 50's. The pine trees are beautiful and the leafy trees are just turned and losing their leaves. Y'all come visit when you're tired of the cold!

    I really enjoy your channel.
Moisture is evaporating from your body faster in the dry desert than it does in the damp forest, thus the difference in the cooling effect that you experience. Keeping yourself moisturized will help. It helped me during my 31 years of experience as a mailman in a much colder climate.

Sebastapol is one of my favorite towns. To the west, on the coast is the town of Jenner. And 45 minutes north of that, along the coast highway, is the town of Gualala which is my very favorite town. It is hard to get to but worth if for a quick visit. There really isnt much there as far as stores so stock up in Jenner or even Santa Rosa if you are going there for a few days of venture. This area of Northern California is a real treasure.

When I was a kid in the early sixties, one of my uncles worked at Camp Meeker. Sebastopol was a quirky little town even then. It was known for the Italian Restaurants. I think there were three of them. It is a beautiful area and I always liked visiting there. Happy New Year to you.

Speaking of "canopy of green trees". My grandfather grew up in the "piny woods" of east Texas. The first time that he saw an open sky it scared him. He said it was like the opposite of claustrophobia. He grew up with horse and buggy. Dirt poor, no car, and never took the train out of the woods. He didn't stay long out of. The woods while in North Texas he and his two buddies were arrested for a train robbery. No, he didn't go to jail he had them call his local sheriff to vouch for them. They called, and the sheriff said those are good ol boys, they would never rob a train. So they let them go.
-- You would love to have talked to my grandfather. Y'all are probably kindred spirits. Perhaps one day y'all will meet. 😄

You are right about dry cold, I spent my teenage years in Blackfoot Idaho where one winter it got to -40 F. But the coldest I’ve ever been was in Arizona in the early 1980s. It was 80 degrees in the day and 32 at daybreak where my best friend and I spent a drunken overnighter out on our Harleys. Then we had to ride across Phoenix with only tank tops. Until he died a few years ago we would always ask “what’s the coldest you’ve ever been”? And that morning always prevailed. 😎

blanket! Was through there about a week before you. Went up 101 to Florence, Or, to miss snow on I 5. Had about 1 in. between coast and Eugene. Great trip up 101 camping. Lots of rain. Lots warmer than Vacaville which was 31. Glad to get back to Or where it was wet but warmer. Now 12.30.21, 4am freezing cold, snow 12.31.21. Making my R Pod ready for next outing. Oh, did I mention sometimes I'm a glamper. I do have a 4x4 for desert roughing it. 77 y o, and still camping. So.e day see you on the trail. Happy New Year, to you and your family.

A spoonful of cod liver oil will fight the vapors. Your outfit at the end reminded me of the lady that walked around talking to herself and swearing at everyone. I would buy her a hot coffee on winter days and she would stand there swearing at me as she drank it, did not dare walk away as she may throw it at you. Even though I was in college she taught me new swear words in multiple languages, so she had to be multilingual when more able to be around people.

"Babushka and the Vapors" would be a great band name. Actually, there was a band called The Vapors, who had one hit called Turning Japanese. No Babushka, though.
Regarding the effect of humidity on the subjective feeling of cold, my own experience (as a fellow desert dweller) is that dry cold is less intense than wet cold, just as dry heat is less intense than a humid heat.

Agreed. I used to live 15ish miles north of Sebastopol in Rio Nido, a 'suburb' of Guerneville in a steep-sided narrow north to south canyon that only saw a few hours of dappled sunlight a day. It always felt cold; the damp just settled on you like dewdrops on a spider web. I live in the Ogden area now and it can be well below freezing on a calm day and no jacket required.

Totally reminds me of my sis and brother in laws cabin in trinity, it was just out of Junction City, not as finished, as your moms, but it was beautiful, and right on a creek, we had water going across the road as well, and it was very steep as well. They had to sell it, so it's no longer in the family. But great memories!

Higher humidity means that moisture on your skin does not evaporate as easily. Remember your swamp cooler, evaporating water takes a lot of heat. 220 Kcals per mole Or 220,000 calories per 18 grams. Wind accelerates the evaporation and removes the tiny layer of still air on your skin. Hence, the term "wind chill"

Dont you love I-5? LOL! I use to drive it a lot when I was living in Cupertino and LA and LV. Drove many times from one end to the other but I always went thru Los Angeles to Las Vegas because I had businesses and houses in both places there too. So I would check on everything in all the places. At the time I lived with my ex-fiance in Cupertino where I had just bought a nice big house planning to live happily ever after while we were in negotiations to buy the Sahara. Well neither worked out so back to LA I went! My real home base but I loved the road from I-5 to the 101 that went thru Goleta. That was a beautiful drive thru the countryside and always made up for the I-5 drive. Have fun! Happy Holidays! Take care and God bless you all! David

We are the same in NW Washington state - foggy, misty, mossy, damp, and....plump. Now dealing an arctic blast of snow and cold, we know how to hunker down when we need to. And yes, we also have to resist the urge to hibernate and get active. I still love the verdant forests. But, your Death Valley openness and horizons of sage are also beautiful.

I live in Maryland it's full of forest and lush ferns and thousands of varieties of plants. Yes humidity in the summer is brutal as much as 70 percent. Just short of raining. But the forest are so worth exploring tons of interesting finds and critters. It's very much appreciated.
We have rivers and bays everywhere so it hard to escape the humidity.
Your landscape is beautiful it's a different kind of beautiful.
I've hiked many surrounding states sure you. Thought of living there but I'd miss my green landscape. It's like a rain forest. We have the four seasons. The colors are amazing.... I must say you are very interesting. I'd love to have a friend like yourself. Not a lot of women here are interested in hiking and exploring old treasures of history left behind. Do I'll joke through you lol
    Happy New Year Sarah !🎉🎊🎇

Happy new year to you and all your kin too (all year.) Love the "secret B-roll". I actually love all the outdoor terrains; wet mossy forest, mostly dry forest, above timberline mountains, high desert, low desert, seashore. And all the others. I admit that I deal with cold better than heat (and cold and wet requires special equipment, planning, and careful execution), but I am always awed by the plants and animal that make a living in the desiccation of the low altitude desert.

On the subject of humidity and “ feeling of coldness” having lived in the UP of Michigan (dry cold) for five years and then in Northwest Florida (wet cold) I’ve thought that wet cold is colder. Enjoy your adventures. Always interesting and entertaining. Happy New Year. Don & Sue Ellen in Florida

Exactly! She had it backwards. Wet cold is much worse.

I've spent a lot of time in the redwoods on the coast and in the Sierra nevadas they are very beautiful and I thought that's where I wanted to spend the rest of my life , until I got to the desert. I have been in the desert for 18 years now and have never felt so free as I do living here.

Dry cold is sooooo much better than damp cold! Wind is the killer. I did a bunch of years working outdoors up and down the east coast. It's the wind that'll git ya!

I had a clawfoot tub 35 years ago. I've torn about 20 of them out of old houses.
