We used to visit on our way to Death Valley for Christmas in the 60’s. I would love to go back.

You that style of mansions in SoCal, especially Rancho Santa Fe, CA. I love it.

Ive been there several times, its a very interesting place.
My Aunt and her then husband who was a San Francisco real estate broker heard about this place and stopped to see it through the gates around 1940, and Scotty drove up and asked them what they were doing and they introduced themselves and were in a nice car of the day and he invited inside, they actually had something set up where they rented the guest house out to travelers and they spent the night there. This may have been in the 1930s also because the Johnson's were there and I know she died in a car accident in the desert

I went here when I was 16 (about 50 years ago) and remember it fondly. I remembered Mr. Johnsons shower in his private bathroom, he was a very tall man and when his shower was built, they raised the showerhead so he would not have to bend over far to wash his hair. When I bought my house and remodeled it, I did the same to my shower...

Wow, only ten years to almost repair the damage. That must be a new federal government record.

how can the gov't spend $66 million repairing it. Any builder could rebuild it from scratch for less than half of that. Typical gov't waste as usual.

because, only in California, is it important to maintain multi-millionaires estates with state money rather than provide mental health care to prevent mass shootings... what a waste of money... should have graded that damm thing over...

@@rss608 Perhaps those issues shouldn’t be taxpayers concerns. Maybe people choosing to breed should take care of their own offspring… or, not have them. Point being; do the proper parenting. Just exactly why would anybody ever think taxpayers should be managing the mental health of others? I get that it is a real problem but the REAL problem lies in people who should not be breeding… having more people enter the world who were not properly raised and cared for. Mass shooters have less to do with complete strangers than they do with bad upbringing and guidance.

It's been a decade....... Park Rangers do get paid, they have a salary....... just having a bunch of them work in the area up and down this Park as well others will be a couple million each year in the park system...... and then you add the insurance fees, the sheer amount of destruction, roads that needed total reconstruction AFTER the dirt was removed. And just imagine the work that had to put in to remove the dirt all around that came up halfway up the doors and walls to the building, the burned down visitors' center, etc etc....... a decade's worth adds up
