  • SADO KINZAN, which translates to Gold Mine on Sado Island, is the largest gold mine in Japan. The gold mine was extracted during the Edo Period in the 1600s. During the latter Edo Period, due to a lack of miners, criminals and homeless people were sent to work in the mines. During the Meiji Period, the Meiji government sold the gold mine to Mitsubishi to extract gold (and silver) until World World II, after which the mine became slightly insignificant. It was designated a National Monument in 1994. Now, there are robotic miners re-enacting the mining activities of the past. @TravelWhiskers @TastyWaterOM
