- An American perspective on the “surge” of U.S. military forces during the war on Iraq in this 2008 documentary through the eyes of the Bad Voodoo Platoon.
In June 2007, as the American military surge reached its peak, a band of National Guard infantrymen was deployed to Iraq. Follow Sergeant Toby Nunn and his unit as they face the harsh realities of convoy security and combat during one of the most critical periods of the Iraq War. This documentary - produced for PBS Frontline and directed by Deborah Scranton - captures their rigorous training, emotional struggles, and the unbreakable bonds formed amidst the chaos of war.
This video was rescued from a VHS cassette purchased on eBay from Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Damn that really hit me when he said to have your tourniquet on your leg ready in case you get hit. My best friend survived 3 deployments over there he was a PJ and then went to TAC p he went through a lot unfortunately he took his own life in 2012 rip aaron🙏🙏
🙏🙏🙏🫡
I'm sorry my friend it's not easy to lose a friend in that way but unfortunately we all do after all the shit we've all been through in life civilian or military it's hard either way
RIP BIG AARON🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
@@taylorbowling640 yea it really sucks even worse was he was at my house he was outside with his dog I walked outside and heard the gun go off I even saw the flash I thought he was just shooting but when I called his name he didn't respond. I gave him CPR for almost 30 mins waiting for the ambulance to come they came in about 10 minutes but waited at the top of my road for the police because there was a weapon involved in the incident so they had to have the police with them and the cops just responded like it was a fender bender it was absolutely ridiculous and by far the worst night of my life. Either way I can't change what happened and all I can do is remember him every day and try to live the best life I can to honor his life I knew him since we were in 2nd grade when he died a part of me did too. 😭😭
@@thedude828-ed2nn heavy stuff bro, he had some demons and is in a better place, you did all you could. MUCH love
Was in Baghdad with 4th ID during the Surge 07-09.
Same! Was at fob Falcon, 1-4 Cav!! out o fort riley
Thanks for saving this gem!
There is no words in the English language that describes the brotherhood bond you feel with your buddies during and after your first deployment. Its a side of beautiful that cant be found anywhere else. Love those guys! 🦅🌎⚓🇺🇸💪🏼
There is one word, gay.
I saw the other side of this war in Afghanistan. So many friends lost. Remember we need to be here for our felow vets
Just ask myself how many from that Platoon are still alive today ?
mostly people asking: how many unrelease tapes out there?
already to many.
Funny part about that is that KBR Still charges the military even when they don’t show up…
Same with Halliburton (which were once combined). Ironic Dick Cheney was the former CEO and then the Vice President when Iraq was invaded.
Jason Shaw and I were in the same company. 2003 and 2005.
Thank you for your service 🦅 Bad Voodoo Platoon. Outstanding Idea for A Production .👍👍👍👍👍
I was there in 2009, looking at the quality of the recording, it's something out of the 80s. I volunteered for a tour prior leaving the Army after 22 years, I can't believe it's been 15 years.
We got hit in 05 what a mess
Joined a few years after this was filmed. Can’t believe so many people are gone because of this war.
RIP BRADY WE MISS YOU EVERYDAY BROTHER
I was part of the surge 08/09-10/11. Illinois nasty girl. 88m 1244th north riverside! Yea boi!
Virtual Embed…?
Thats an interesting descriptor… how much gear got damaged or lost..? Good work! Huah!
Ran same mission Jan. 2005 through Feb.2006…. Lead gun truck, Sadr City, Ramadi, every where, Syrian and Turkish border. Was a very very hard thing to get any one to take the mission over, think we had atleast 2 companies do right side rides and completely resisted and refused the mission hence why we stayed 14 months
@DrewThornbug You guys were and still are straight dogs. Be proud, because we're proud of you. You don't even know who I am but you did it for me and my 4 sons inadvertently. Politics are a rich mans game. Thank you for your service brother and welcome home!
Subbed
God Bless all our brave men and women in the U.S. military and our allies as well. 🙏🙏
Waiting for KBR was the worst lol. Huge corrupt org too.

The surge is why I didn’t join the Army after Graduating high school
Camp Virginia and Camp Victory
That platoon leaders got some screws loose you can tell. I hope he gets better
There's certainly something off in some of his speech patterns. He may just be an off guy, on camera, or he's burnt out. He looks like he was at home among his men, though, so I suspect the oddness is the unfamiliarity with being on camera, of all things.
war is hell
I 👂 him cry out to Allah and I thought standby hes coming
2000s quality
Of course this bad ass is Canadian. Hooo rah.. EH 🇨🇦 ✊🏻
If I didn't bomb the math part of the Asvap I would have been in Iraq

Asvab
I got a 32 lol I joined navy u need 35 they let me join reserves I could of been a corpsman or seabee I picked seabee but I got medical discharge in bootcamp ho estly was addicted to oxy cotton don't know how they let me in I never stopped taking it .and got to bootcamp took suboxone soon as landed in Chicago and was in withdrawal immediate cuz with suboxone had to wait .24 hours I waited 3 lol I did 10 blues oxygen codone 30 MG on plane to bootcamp .I was so dopesick.rhwn I had to see shrink and I told them I smoked weed as a teen and they discharged me .I was in separations like 3.5 months I would been graduated bootcamp and been half way through my a school lol .I regret ever saying I smoked weed. Private military were fighting US troops.
What a world it would be, no person man or woman with children couldn't go to war. Or woman and man without children couldn't go to war either. Hopefully that's the future of all countries, that is how we colonize space and help society and actual civil people.
Lol thats one hell of a way to try and say people shouldnt go to war
Cold War veteran here. So glad I didn't get fooled into the GWOT BS.
Also glad my nephews didn't get involved in the Neocon agenda.
Yeah you just got fooled into the arms race buildup to make the necons rich
@@justinschnepp5419His point still stands. The GWOT was the biggest scam in American history. Now with the country in trillions of debt. Nobody can afford a house or an apartment. This is what you fought for.
“Cold War veteran” so, you went on vacation in Europe for your time and think that makes you a veteran? Go to sleep old man
lol “Cold War veteran” like that’s even a thing
It wasn't a GWOT. It was an invasion of two countries with mass murder of its people. All for resources.
Who’s the enemy when you’re the invader?
You sre
