Geoff as the Baron is the only entity who has the power to take a soul OR restore the soul to the world. That's why there was a sense of hostility between him and the others. Did you notice that Earl's coin was gone from around his neck when he woke? The idea is that it was taken as payment by the Baron.
First, the gentleman with Earl is his husband. He also appeared (with Geoff, Layne and Eli’s wives) in the Boybands video. The part where they were standing around talking about ‘his big wallet.’ Layne and Eli pulled bits from Queen’s catalog of music specifically to tell a story. This was just after Earl had a health scare while they were on tour. Aside from Eli mentioning Freddy Mercury’s interest in mythology, the rest of this comment is based on the video and my own research as an amateur student of mythology: Anubis (Egyptian) (J None), Cerberus (Greek) (Layne) and Yama Nirvana (East Asian and Buddhist) (Eli) are all guardians that convey souls to the underworld. There is visible tension in the video between them and Geoff’s character, Baron Samedi (Haitian Voudou). Baron is the master of the dead AND the giver of life. A person will not die if Baron refuses to dig their grave. So while the others want to get on with it, it’s the Baron’s decision. It’s only right that he is the last one to face Earl before Earl’s return to his life.
Thank you for posting that info! I have always been fascinated by mythology, although I've never actually studied it or done any research, other than what I learned in high school. But this info makes me love this MV even more than i already did - if that's even possible! 😉
👍 Also, someone else pointed out somewhere that 1) Baron's cane comes down across Earl's chest protecting him from the others and allowing him to decide to "Break Free" and continue his life and 2) the pendant that Earl's husband placed around his neck became the payment made to Baron for letting him live as it had disappeared when Earl revived. It's a wonderfully creative way to tell the story.
Glad you enjoyed this it is one of my favourites that i keep coming back to again and again. J.None - Anubis an Egyptian god who would weigh the deceased's heart against a feather from Maat who was the goddess of truth and justice. If you had lived a good honest life your heart would be light as a feather, but for every bad thing you had done your heart would weigh a little heavier. Eli - Yama Nirvana I don't know much about this one. Yama is the usher of souls responsible for making sure souls are sent onto their correct afterlife. Layne - Guardian (Sentinel of underground) i am wonddering if he is along the lines of cerberus, the three headed dog (Layne is wearing a fluffy /faux fur coat). Cerberus is a guardian of the afterlife and respondible for ensuring no one escaped the afterlife. Which is why when Earl is singing about "just gotta get right out of here" Layne pulls out his sword as if to say time to get to work and stop him from leaving. Geoff - Baron (possibly Samedi) - the Baron is a master of the dead but also giver of life and can cure mortals of any disease and wounds. In return for "payment" and at the end of this video Earl's pendant is gone.
I love the story they pieced together from queen songs. Earl having a brush with death and having to choose to fight or give up. Geoff being the angel of death who chooses when it’s time for people to die, and not being convinced it’s Earl’s time, and standing up to the three underworld gods who want to claim Earl here and now.
This one has EVERYTHING you could wish for: it has smoking hot Geoff (with high notes!); it has Rock God Eli; it has Layne's insane mouth noises magic; it has THAT VOICEPLAY FLAVOR (DJ's TM, 2023 😉)... and it has you, calling Geoff, George again!!! 😂 Love you lots. ❤
If we were sick of hearing you say things, we wouldn't watch you. While we are still here on this journey with you, still talking to you, still on the Discord with you, we still love you and aren't bored of hearing you. I like this video although I actually "hear" it better when I'm not watching it. The vocal runs from Geoff, that scream (which he attributes to wanting to sound like Chris Cornell when he was younger), the rock God from Eli, J.None's highs, Layne's insane beat boxing, Earl's guitar...yeah, this is incredible but the sounds, for me, are better than the video... Proud to be part of the #HerdMind on this journey #DJAntlers 💗💗
I still think the more remarkable thing about this (that NOBODY remarks on) is that Earl does the whole video in a hospital gown without flashing anyone. Heh.
@@janetdw confirmed. In the BTS he pulls up the gown so we can see his shorts (and sculpted legs -- he has a round face but the body of a power lifter). He was willing to take one for the team, so to speak, but the guys convinced him to wear the shorts.
This is visually my favorite video of VP. Visually it has so much going on that interplay with the lyrics. And Earl doing Freddie... *chef's kiss* And then we get Eli, the rock GOD!
Love this one! It is so creative, and the vocals are incredible! I'm glad you took the time to read the captions for the characters, they are integral to understanding the storyline. And Geoff 'rock scream' went from A#4 to a D#5. That's insane!
The beat boxing and bass lines in this one are just killer. and who doesn't like geoff dressed all in black with a black skull cane, I mean, wowzers 🥰 and THANK YOU for being able to follow the storyline. About 89% of reactors I've seen watch this video had no clue what the story was. I also love your new lore of Eli taking offense to geoff's rock god moment 😂 You are the best, as always dj. 💜🦌 #DJantlers #DJsHerd
Earl in Boy Band in 5 Minutes will do it for you, too. Of course, it will for each of them. This one was done after Earl had a health scare, appendicitis I think, but not sure.
Just recently found your reaction vids. Love your animations, accent, the whole nine... BUT... What in Satan's A**hole was that unfathomable run Geoff did?!?!?!?! It INSTANTLY brought chills through my entire body and made me cry!! A'capella is a HUGE love of mine. *THAT RUN*... made me weak. ❤
Now for an interesting triple threat might I suggest Once Upon A Dream/Grim Grinning Ghosts/Hide and Seek (Ding Dong)...all equally awesome and creepy. The first two are with Earl and Tony the last is with Cesar. I think you'd enjoy them.
By the time J-None joined them, yeah, they were already pretty good. Not that they haven't continued to improve since, because they have; but the _big_ improvements were back in the Tony era. The first really incredibly good one they did, was Phantom of the Opera, and then they started to hit it out of the park on a pretty regular basis during the Partwork era. Tennessee Whiskey gets reactors every time, and that was still Partwork.
@DJ_410 The best one is Phantom, IMO. First Noel is also good, but seasonal; Grim Grinning Ghosts likewise. There's also Survivor, which is a collab with Home Free. There are others, but those are the best ones. And of course Tony is also involved with Pattycake, but that is quite different from VoicePlay, though it still falls under the general heading of musical theatre.
Everyone is such a beast in this. Yes, totally agree with you about Eli, hope we get a cover from him (many actually, and originals. We're pestering him for it. :D ) Thanks for the reaction!
You have reacted to Geoff's rock scream before.....in Oogie Boogie, and in The Little Mermaid.....but yes,.......it is AMAZING whenever he does it....'Rock-God' Eli.....says it all.....everyone was 'running on ALL cylinders'.....>^^
You really need to react to Voiceplay's Daddy Sang Bass. That will let you see Earl and Geoff on two opposite sides of the spectrum. Also, can I recommend Way Down by Geoff solo, it's shows off his fun side. One more, Tennessee Whiskey. By the way, love the content!
I absolutely love the whole narrative of this video... the near death experience... it is so emotionally powerful. And yeah, they've come a long way since they made this one, but as far as I'm concerned, this one holds up to their newer stuff without difficulty.
Further recommendation for Queen covers: Jukebox the Ghost. They've been celebrating "Halloqueen" for several years now, and - yeah, there's only three people. And you should know by now. A VoicePlay video ain't over till the patron list rolls. 🤪
I knew you'd love this one! And you've only scratched the surface! I am really looking forward to watching you discover more & more of their incredible music!!!
And that reaction to Geoff and Eli's rock belts would be exactly why people wanted to see you react to this!! 😂 Great reaction. I love this rock god side of them and wish we could see more of it. I keep going back to that video to see that rock god element, in Geoff in particular - he really lets rip and is so darn badass and freakin' good when he does! 🤘
Just for fun, go back and listen to the background vocals during Geoff’s rock tenor moment. They are singing this beautiful funky jazz line that gets overlooked.
Damn, that's how passion VP has for their work. Just when I thought they reached perfection, they are perfection, but on different scales of brightness.
This is it, this is my favorite VP video. Still, despite the amazement that has come out. It's not just that there's a whole epic story that's going on, it's that there's a whole _backstory_ to it all that we never get to learn for sure. Why do the other three gods and Baron seem to dislike each other? What is the relationship between them all? And it's got Geoff's what-am-I-hearing rock high note; his epic bass runs during Bohemian Rhapsody; Eli's sudden shift into rock grit when he starts We Will Rock You; Earl's sustained final note in my favorite Queen song of all, The Show Must Go On; Layne's beatbox breakdown as we transition into The Show Must Go On; J None's _fire_ in "We'll keep on fighting 'til the end"... I love it, and I've been eagerly awaiting you getting to it, because I knew it would be a delight to see.
Gah, I love this one so much. Another older one that I haven't seen get recommended a lot but that I think you'd get a kick out of, is Attention with Earl and Rachel Potter. Its so good.
Now you need to check out Billie Eilish in 3 minutes, Panic in 4 minutes part 1 and 2 in that order. Between the 3 videos, it has a plot line that travels throughout all of them. Plus, it's a great listen.
I love how they made a story out of all those songs. It was soooo amazingly good. Freddie would be indeed proud of this. Those voices and vocals... Everything! Holy cow they are so freaking amazing! 🤩
Earl is most known for his super high tenor range but if you want to hear his "nirmal" voice, which is beautiful but not heard so much, try Death of a Bachelor. It's just him and Geoff but it's a much underappreciated video. In my opinioin. NEVER leave a VP video until the patron list rolls. There's often a bit more.
Love, love, love your reactions to everything. You have to react to Voiceplay's We Don't Talk About Bruno, If I Were a Rich Man/Girl, any of their Disney, have you done Phantom Of the Opera?
Well, that video sure blew up. People were certainly hyped for it 😊 I love that VP attempted to create a full story using only Queen songs. I am never sure if I am understanding it correctly but at some point I get distracted by that high from Geoff and rock god Eli directly after him and stop paying attention anyway 😅
I've always loved this storytelling of Earl's travails against the gods of the underworld. There is a rare Freddie Mercury video that I would love for you to react to. Dave Clark, musician, composer and Freddie's friend, did a musical and he wanted Freddie to star in it. He was turned down, Freddie said he couldn't make the matinees. But he did surprise Dave Clark when on stage he did a solo accompanied by a pianist which is entitled, "Time Waits for No One". Freddie was enormously talented and he did a lot of great music, but this one affects me in a way that nothing else has. Performed in the mid 80s, and buried in the vaults and not played or distributed until the 2000s I believe. It is still relevant to the times and just gorgeous.
And aside from all the other things that have been mentioned here in the comments, Earl's necklace that he has on at the start is missing when he wakes up at the end. Payment to Baron for his second chance? 🙂
I've never really paid attention to this song, thanks for bringing it back into the eather. I never really heard much of the early years with Earl apart from a few songs. looking forward to your next reaction, always enjoy watching you squirm to the vocals, especially the Bass tones 😅
Love this one always as both a big Queen and Voiceplay fan ❤ Since you love Queen too, you should also check out the medley Peter Hollens did! It's amazing and funny at the same time 😂
I always love, love, love your reactions but please, please, don't be to quick to end their videos too soon. You know they often have something else at the end. Thank you!
@@dj_410 I don’t believe there is a song made that can actually showcase everything this man can do. Suggestion for off camera things: he has videos on his own channel of him just reading stories. Best thing to fall asleep to ever.
OK. once one of the reactors went out of frame after Geoff's low note in Hoist the colors, forgetting that he wasn't wearing any pants. What video will make you undress? (I'm kidding)
Uh-oh! I tipped your Likes over to 666! LOL Layne represents the Archangel Michael, known to escort souls to Heaven and most often depicted with a sword. Eli represents Yama, the Buddhist deity of the dead, judging souls, bringing those worthy to Nirvana. He is often depicted with a mace. Geoff represents the chief Haitian voodoo/vodou loa of the dead. He is also the giver of life, so represents the gatekeeper between the two. He is often shown carrying a death's head cane. And J. None is Anubis. Egyptian god who used his scales to weigh a person's soul/heart against a feather. If the soul was lighter, Anubis would escort the worthy to the afterworld. The conceit is that each entity wants to take Earl's soul to their afterlife. Rick Underwood, the makeup artist on so many of VoicePlay and Geoff's videos, researched signs and symbols representing these beings and incorporated them into the makeup. Some people consider this the "end of the trilogy story" started in Trapped: Billie Eilish in 3 Minutes, continued in Panic! at the Disco in 4 Minutes Pt. 1 and 2 (though Panic! was filmed first).
“Baron. Makes sense with his voice.” LOL
Geoff: I"ve made a few~
DJ:

Isn't it amazing?!!!! I had my jaw on the floor the entire video of them... I knew you would be flabbergasted when seeing this one!!!!!😁
Geoff’s belt here is probably my fave ever Geoff moment. He’s just so confident and bad ass and it’s all perfect.
Geoff still has the skull cane from this video!

As a Queen fan for so many years I really love this cover.
Many people describe Earl's voice as a "laser beam." In the right song, as you have just seen, it can be QUITE effective.
Laser beam doesn't fully cover it!! Man's got the whole death star in his throat!! Haha
You have to watch Geoffs' cover of Elvis's "Way Down" The booty wiggle killed me.
Not to mention his butt along with it is sexy 😊

I love your reactions!
"earl-ier" like...more early than the ones without earl (are they earl(l)ess?) ^^
3 words: I miss Earl!
1 and 2 (though Panic! was filmed first).
that wasnt the ending.. xD just saying
Earl's voice is just so cartoonishly high and tight. Works great for character voices, but doesn't fit a lot of songs.
