I dont remember which TH-camr said it, but the advise was "do not look at the sizelabel AT ALL".
Just pick up a few items you like, try them all on and without Looking at the sizelabel, pick the one that fits you best.
Undoubtedly the best tip of the decay.

It took me so long to get over the brown/black combo. I used to hate the look of them together and now I don’t mind it so much. It’s funny when I think about it because leopard print is such a classic, timeless print and that’s basically brown and black together 😂
Totally agree leggings as pants is not always appropriate and defiently need to do the butt crack test! Wearing leggings around for leisure is different.

personally, I think wearing matching metals just makes you look more put together and it's shows you have great attention to detail but like share your opinions bros
Stance on the legging situation:
There are different types of leggings and some I think can be worn as pants. If the material is thick enough and it's pretty tailored it's okay. I'd say avoid the thin waistband ones and anything that's made from like a tights-esque material. Also wear something flowier atop and maybe don't do a super cropped top. But there are a lot of intresting leggings that I wouldn't pass up so as long as it doesn't look like it's just painted on and you balance the tightness out it can work
I wear me, I really don't care . Even the big designers don't care . Who sets the trends anyone? One human then we follow, hahahhahaha . Great video as always.
You should never follow trends at all unless you like it yourself.
completely agree about the leggings as pants situation. when i was in high school, we had a uniform, but whenever we had free dress (all-girls school btw) majority of girls would wear leggings, an oversized sweatshirt, and uggs or moccasins because we weren't trying to look good, we just wanted to be comfortable (and it was just school, we weren't trying to impress anyone lol). now, if im actually putting together an outfit, leggings just aren't considered - im a denim person all the way. but if im going for an athletic/cute n' casual athleisure outfit then leggings would make sense.
With you Ashley on all these tips! Though certain leggings can be great with a long sweater or tunic top and boots! Just my opinion.
I’m wearing leggings as pants sometimes. I get thick ones and wear them to feel compfy. When I’m going to university, while traveling or casually meeting friends. I’d never wear them to fancier occasions ☺️

SimpleGirl I totally agree with you but if you are here watching Ashley, you should know this is not yet something she subscribes to. That’s not a diss to her..people just have to learn & want to change. It’s pretty hard to stay trendy & buy the volume of clothes she does, responsibly. Sadly, fast fashion fuels most of these style channels.

Ugh I love this so much! I wore a navy skirt and black top to school in high school and my friend told me that I looked like a “bruise” and it’s something I’ll never forget-JOKE’S ON HER 😘😘
I have these fleece lined leggings I love to wear when out for a walk with the 🐕...they are the coziest things in the world and love wearing them with oversized sweaters.
I think the leggings thing goes in hand with the tip knowing the occasion. Leggings and heels are a no-go. Leggings are not pants, and there are different types as well. The ones to lounge around the house, and the ones you can wear out to a class or to run errands after your yoga class. You know? I feel like there’s a fine line with leggings hahahha and I think a good question to make to ourselves every time we are planning to wear leggings is “am I trying to wear pants, or leggings” because I feel like when we are tying to substitute pants with leggings that’s when the problem happens haha. Loved the video!!
Yeah, I always been one that wore what I like. At 56, I seen trends come and go and repeat. Right now I think this is the best of time for fashion because it like anything goes. It about what you feel your most in. It like in the The Wiz where Oz is announcing what color was in to wear and each time he announced it everyone change to that color. Color I feel is never trending, all hues on this earth is in, it what make life interesting. This video was fun, thanks for sharing Ashley.
My opinion on leggings are like, the leather leggings from Zara from example can be wear as pants, but the cotton leggings to do workout or whatever is a big no

I’m with you on the leggings rule hun! My other “rule” to follow is not wearing “ugg boots” (sheepskin boots) outside. I’m from Australia, and those are definitely for inside wear only. I can’t stand seeing people in NY wearing them out, especially in the wet/rain/snow. The toecaps get wet and I cant imagine anything worse than wet sheepskin/shearling on your toes!

I agree with all the rules you mentioned; The white sweater dress outfit and the plaid top/ skirt outfits are so pretty!
White knit&coat was my fav outfit...oh the necklaces (i LOVE earrings&necklaces, especially handmade ones 😍😍)
At my old job we used to have a leggings rule; you may wear them as pants but your shirt must cover your butt and your hoo-ha area. Lol. It’s probably a really good rule of thumb for everyone.

Love all of your fashion rules and tips especially black/navy, mixing metals, mixing leather textures of same color family AND mixing patterns were all good ones!! And the legging thing I agree with too because you're not telling people what to do just giving something to think about when wearing them.

I always wear black and brown and looks beautiful! The shoes/purse matching doesn't work anymore, you're totally right! I love mixing two different browns and looks great. Great tips! Also leggings as pants are aweful. Love from San Francisco Ash!
I wore almost that exact outfit last week you showed with the black turtleneck and navy paper bag pants! I used to swear by no black +navy but honestly it’s soo chic 👌🏻

Can I also say, to dress appropriately for the season? I can understand that everyone has a different perception of temperature... but bare legs and sandals in Paris, in January, with the snow around you? 😐 I believe that is nice to follow fashion and trends as long as you don’t suffer... what is the point of not wearing a coat because you want to show your outfit, if then you go around literally shaking from cold?

Always good to be refreshed and reminded about ways to be bold, creative, but also staying modest and respectful. No one likes seeing butt cracks in a grocery store...

I wear whatever makes me feel good. It's all about holding my head up with a smile and getting compliments more often than not!!!
I didn't know that I needed this video until I saw it ! thank you so much Ashley for bring us this rules !!! So many of them are old and doesn't fit these days and we don't need to follow, like matching shoes with bags or use an entire outfit of leather or jeans. And I remember the rule of not mix prints, I'm guilty to follow that on this days! (something that definetly has to change!)

I 100% agree with you about the legging situation. As someone who wore them all the time when I was going to the gym or getting ready to go to the gym...it just seemed easier and I really liked them. But now that I've learned how to dress and have gotten pieces that truly flatter me - what a difference!!! Lol, the other thing that I started thinking was....all these fit people and all they wear is athleisure or gym clothes???? What's the point??? So now I still go to the gym (less but that's okay) but I dress better and more importantly I feel better!!!!

disagree with the no leggings as pants thing. obviously nobody should be wearing see-through leggings as pants (or do it, who am i to judge?), but as someone in nursing school who also exercises and has very little time for wardrobe changes throughout the day, i see nothing wrong with wearing my gym clothes (which are always leggings) to class before i go to the gym. i also dont think you have to fit a certain body type to do it. just do you.

If they’re marketed as gym or performance bottoms, they’re not the same material as the leggings that are meant to go under skirts

I think leggings as pants are okay as long as it’s accompanied by a shirt long enough shirt to cover BOTH front and back. Great video!

I agree with not HAVING to buy super expensive "high quality" classic items (blazers, white button downs, etc.). I feel they're tougher to take are of, regardless of how careful I am (ie: wool gets linty, leather scuffs, silk gets stained, etc.), dry-cleaning breaks the bank these days (you can go to Marshalls or TJ Maxx or catch a great sale at Nordstroms or Macy's) & replace the item for the same cost of the dry cleaning tab). Ultimately, I wind up wanting to toss them with the lower quality items I've had enough of in my closet, at around the same time regardless....
Milan, Italy, black&brown or grey&beige in spring and autumn are a must and it stays. Blue&black or light blue&grey are great for summer or winter. Just Italian style for always. Leggings are worn on certain weather depending on what season. But then, this is all Italian eyes on style more than fashion.

I mix prints all the time, but I have my own rules: the prints have to have most colors in common, and a different type and scale from each other. It’s easy to mix classic prints, like dots, stripes, checks, with less-formal, softer ones like animal, floral or tie-dye (but I always wear one color+white tie-dye, not rainbow, because I don’t like it). There are some great tie-dye prints now that are like soft stripes, etc., 60s cloudburst patterns look dated.
Legging opinion:
Don’t wear your leggings out ladies.. running errands in an athleisure outfit is okay if you are pairing it with the right tops, yes. Check the bootie before exiting the house, yes. ✔️
Riding pants/ pointe knit pants are a go to and a must! If you haven’t invested, highly recommend.. especially if you’re a mommy or wear business casual at work, you will feel so put together but so comfortable 😊

I totally agree with you on the leggings thing. I mean when I normally wear leggings I’m wearing an oversized sweater... the other day I wore a bigger sweater, a long coat and white sneakers. I think it just depends on what you are paring it with.

As a forty-ish woman, I adhered to most of those don’ts for most of my life but after much reprogramming, I learned to have fun! Great video! So glad I ran across you.
Having a teen daughter I created and firmly enforce that “leggings are NOT pants.” 😂
Great video! Happy to hear those old stuffy rules are now officially extinct! While I agree that pants and jeans *look* better than leggings with most outfits, especially when the wearer is slim and/or has a more athletic and straight up and down body. Leggings/pants with stretch are a curvy woman's best friend, and if you have digestion issues, cramps or endometriosis, stretchy bottoms that have a little give around your abdominal area is essential on days where your tummy needs extra room. For curvy girls who want to wear dresses and or skirts but their thighs rub together causing chafing, leggings are *crucial*. I speak from experience having had weight fluctuations throughout my teens and into my adult life. I had to learn how to dress at my different weights, so I kind of know from the experience of being both curvier and slimmer / more athletic. Keep up the good work
I feel like fashion has changed so much over the years, fashion is about taking risks! otherwise trends would never be discovered and everyone would dress the same

Leggings!! Well. I think their great. Because there’s moments where my skin can not stand the feeling of jeans, but I think pairing the leggings with a long top or sweater that covers your areas looks cute and your comfy. But I always polish up either my face a little or do something cute with my hair so I don’t look sloppy 😌😁

I will never forget the time I was on campus and I saw this one girl wear navy leggings which were SUPER tight, and she had neon pink lacey underwear, I’m scared for life (she wore them as pants)
I love wearing blavy!!!! Especially a skirt/top combo, I think it’s so chic! Also, some of my favorite sweaters are white and all the old ladies in my office cringe. 😂

I wear a lot of white, year-round, I love it. I wear winter-white/ivory/cream, too, but it doesn’t look as good with my coloring.
Ahhh the metals rule was drummed into me so hard growing up - I still find it hard to break!! 😅
So I totally understand the leggings thing. I have some nice ones from Victoria’s Secret that are structured and not at all see through and I wear those but I almost always wear them with an oversized sweater and boots or a long cardigan or something.

these are so great and I also wanted to throw in a word of encouragement to try to be more thrifty as much as you can! as unbelievable as it sounds, the fashion industry is the second most polluting industry in the world (right behind oil), and the workers are treated like absolute garbage in most fast fashion factories (highly recommend watching The True Cost on Netflix!), just be more mindful of your consumption
Unfourtunately people in the business here simply don’t care. Not trying to diss anyone but it’s true. Being stylish and trendy trumps all. It’s sad how people have no empathy anymore but it is what it is. We can be stylish and aware of what you are saying

Would it be okay to suggest a vid on teaching people on shopping the right sizes. Like, what are the “warning signs” that your blouse is a wee bit big on you or jeans and such. KNOWING THE RIGHT SIZE WHEN SHOPPING!! Teach us, master!

I agree with the leggings. A lot of times my leggings don’t flatter me as well as jeans would for my outfits.
The leggings thingy is so true with not good quality ones that are almost nylon material style. I think they do look good with sweater and riding boots.
I agree with you Ashley! Thank you for sharing your take on the rules. Even when you have a flawless figure, leggings with your butt exposed can look like you forgot to wear a skirt or pants.
