Wow, I just watched your video very impressive with the Mustangs and that out there but I’m so sorry he had to issue with the trailer. That’s really a bummer. I’m going to watch the rest of it. See how it goes. I started watching your channel because of the interview you did with Matt and Cara from Ozark Overland adventures seems like a cool channel. We’ll be following.
Geez man, Hard luck on the road. I spent a lot of time in the same area this year. I found the mustangs in the same place you did and counted 76. I drove Moon Hill Rd and all the rest. Those are very rough roads. I'm glad you got out with no injuries, and some good stories.
Somehow, all your challenges just added to my desire to overland in Oregon! The memories of your trip will become fonder with time because you took on an adventure and overcame great obstacles. Thank you for the video.
The whole Uhaul soft top thing is absolutely ridiculous. I have seen guys get denied for the soft top, go home and put their hard top on, and come back and be able to rent a trailer. Same exact Jeep but with a flimsy piece of fiberglass that does absolutely nothing for chassis rigidity or safety and somehow it is OK. 🤦
Your wife is an absolute trooper. My wife would have killed me. First time finding your channel. Great content. I have officially liked and subscribed.
You guys have had a string of bad luck, I'm sorry! We had some issues on a recent trip where it felt like EVERYTHING broke, but nothing to this extent. The wear on the inside of the tire tread makes it look like the trailing was failing, maybe earlier on the trip. It's definitely something to show Tribe to see if they can make improvements/beef things up.
You and your wife are amazing resilient, a jeep engine blew up (and warranty would not pay out), now a trailer blows up and not just an axel but needing fabrication, not sure how you keep a smile on your face, then lost/misplaced keys, amazing
Thank you. We accept the fact that something catastrophic could happen. If you start with the right mindset, then you shift into "let's figure out the solution" mode rather than panic mode.
I know that welder in Hines. He's a really lovely guy. I live in Portland and travel to southeast Oregon regular with our off-road teardrop. I know all the great spots. I've stopped at his place a couple of times for random things.
I have been in the same situation as you with a trailer. I have since split all my keys up (with extras cut) and stash a spare in every vehicle's glovebox, on my car key ring, and the 'main' key has a magnet on it so if I do lose it, the magnet will hold the key to the metal trailer if I do forget it. I feel your pain on that one!
54:00 There are "cursed" trips, where nothing goes right, and multiple deal breakers pop up, in clusters even. When trips go this wrong for me, I just give up and go home. carefully.
Oof. An Odyssey. Clearly Murphy was stowed away somewhere on the rig without an invitation. That spot in Oregon with the unmelted snow was nuts. Common sense says if I’m seeing unmelted snow in July, there’d be trees, and nope. Not here to second guess decisions made in the heat of battle, but I’m gonna. I’m only trying to help others before they head out for epic trips. The more remote the location I’m heading the more psychotic I am about spare keys. Just because I’m paranoid doesn’t mean Murphy’s not stalking me. No guarantees that “Mucca” ‘d have a locksmith in town, but the cost of fuel might’ve been comparable to getting access to your stuff (if they have one).
I just had a kind of rough trip myself to Telluride. Discount Tires "balanced" and rotated my tires the day before my trip and Brakes Plus adjusted my parking brake and put new brakes on the rear of the Jeep. Tires were not at all balanced with a bad shimmy over 45 mph, they filled 4 tires to 40 psi and one to 32, and broke my wheel lock on the spare. On Imogene pass I heard metal banging and found the rear brake caliper was falling off and I was missing one bolt. I took a bolt off my roof rack and used it for the brakes. My Teraflex springs and shocks in the rear also died and destroyed my bump stops. Your trip sounded way tougher. When it rains, it pours!
Ive been looking at these type of trailers with these new type of suspension systems and have wondered how reliable they are. Thanks for answering my question !
Ran into same issue with U-Haul not renting soft top jeep. Needing to get a broke down jeep home ended up renting a truck and trailer from u haul to accomplish it. Cheaper than tow company
Most of those roads are 5 mph tops. I've been on many in the Steens. Trailer doesn't have the suspension of the tow vehicle. Need to take it easy on that lava.
Well that really turned into quite the adventure for you guys. You had many curves thrown at you. U-HAUL wouldn't rent you a trailer because you have a soft top jeep?? Wow. Good to see you made it back safe.
I always take my Ready Welder mig welder with me. It's a spool gun that runs on dc voltage and it welds amazingly well. I suggest you find a suitcase style welder for your adventures😎
I haven't welded anything since I took a welding class in high school in 1982. I could certainly use a small unit sometimes. I just need some practice.
That was sure a eventful trip, your drone footage was cool, those kiger mustangs get wrangled up by helicopters now and then so i think they are very weary of flying objects, not sure drone's are allowed in wilderness areas, so better keep that in mind.
Thank you for sharing your adventure that was awesome, I’m really sorry for what you folks went through, that swing arm/never should have broken, I don’t know who the manufacturer of your trailer is but something is definitely wrong that should never happen even if you hit a rock etc. that trailer was designed with a swing arm springs and I would assume shocks, to be used off roading, there is a major design flaw imagine if you hit a deep rut on the highway you didn’t know it was there this could’ve been much worse. I would Soum the costs were pretty significant, the welder that was helping you seems to be a real good guy and you were fortunate to find him.
27:56 😮 Yet ANOTHER in a line of videos demonstrating why dragging a trailer off-road is NOT for me. Thanks for the reinforcement. #WeightIsTheEnemy #SimplerIsMUCHBetter
a little to much adventure for me! I left Oregon when I was 15 in 1962 and went for a visit in 1990 and won't go again. Gas where I live is $3.09 and that location is a secret!!
Trailer suspension design by unqualified persons who lack understanding of strength and of fatigue, we saw a similar major failure on the Hole in the Rock road south of Escalante.
One..lone…key….on a road trip ? Guess you’ll put a spare in the glove box next time out. Yes, been there done that with my motorbike.…🤦♂️ Life is constant learning experience. 👍🤙
an other option was to remove the failed suspension and take it for repair The designers of the failed suspension appear to have paid for some one to sit their structural design exam - ijidits
I did not have the equipment there to do that. I have removed the suspension before to change the bushings so I know what is involved (in fact, I wrote their guide on how to do it). I would have needed my floor jack and some extensions and the closed place to buy new ones was over 250 miles away.
We never said it was. We had a set amount of time to complete it, much would have been fine. We went home because the trailer wasn’t in any condition to take through the rest of the trail. I’m not sure what prompted you to make this comment.
It is a Tribe Trailer Overland Basecamp. We have taken it on MUCH harder trails. The problem is that it has Gen 1 suspension from back when Tuff Stuff was making the trailers. When Tribe Trailer split from Tuff Stuff, the suspension was upgraded on the newer models. We are waiting on the new parts and we should not have any issues in the future.
@@johnrivers9393 That is correct. The original Tuff-Stuff one is what we have. The suspension was one of the first things they changed when they split into their own company.
You say you had your tools, did you try to break those locks or did you not want to damage them? I would have did whatever I could to break in to my own trailer but I don’t always make the best decisions.
At this point, we were already going home, so inflicting more damage/cost didn’t seem like a good move. It’s not like there was some life critical medical equipment.
BDR....your mean the route "By mortorcyclists For motorcyclists?" Are you monitizing a video to profit off the hard work of the volunteers who created the route and receive nothing?
What? These are all existing double track trails, not motorcycle trails. BDR isn’t even in the title or thumbnail. But if I was on an adventure bike and monetizing a BDR video, then that would be ok?
Awesome video. You definitely set a great example of how to be when things go wrong.

I had the alternator fail twice on the same truck. Both times, I was 200 to 400 miles from home in Eastern Oregon.

A simple single axle is more reliable for outback travelling.
Beautiful drone cinematography! What equipment are you using? This really makes me want to do an overlanding trip out west!!!
For drones we use a DJI Mavic 3 and a DJI Avata 2
