    Never had any issues at 110000 miles and still going strong. Yes, I use 100% synthetic oil and still running new. I still get 40mpg with cylinder deactivation on the highway.

    It's extremely annoying, me being a mazda fan and planning on purchasing a cx5 in the near future, that cylinder deactivation is standard on ALL trim levels for the 18-20 years. If I had enough money to buy a brand new 2021 I would, but part of the reason I love mazda is because they and toyota have EXCPLICITLY avoided some of these dumbass new technologies like tiny engines with turbos/ direct injection (oil dilution problems eg honda and gmc), cvt transmissions, etc. They are about quality and reliability, but this REALLY shakes my confidence in their engineering. It just seems like a ticking time bomb, and for what, and extra 1 mpg? Cmon man

    • @JSS
      @JSS  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don’t think it is a ticking time bomb. You always have the option to purchase a 2.5 turbo engine without it. You’re right the 1 mpg increase is not worth it for these technologies. However as long as manufacturers have to meet the demands of politicians they will keep creating and using these types of enhancements. I don’t think you will have any problems or disappointments with any CX5 with cylinder deactivation.

    Is there any way to deactivate this "feature"? I have only read horror stories about cylinder deactivation and with the new 2021 models coming out with this "feature" missing completely, doesn't really instill any sort of confidence with this technology.

    • @JSS
      @JSS  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not aware of how to deactivate it. I think they discontinued it for 2021 because of increased Turbo offerings, and it didn't really have the fuel economy payoff they were hoping for.

    I have this technology on my 2019 Mazda 3. Had an issue with it for over a year. When it would go into two cylinders at 80-100 kmh it would vibrate the whole car and create a low rumbling sound. There was a fix recently released with updated radiator mounts and software which has pretty much resolved the issue

      @@JSS This is not correct disconnection of two cylinders. We can see that the valves are closed. The cylinders are under compression. And this means that compression slows down the engine and the car. It's like a retarder in a truck. To properly disconnect the cylinders, you need to open the valves. This is called the decompression mechanism.

    Most people rely upon the car moving slowly with the right foot not on the gas pedal at all. This is particularly true when parking, for example. I think this is called the "idle speed" and is very helpful when you want to move very slowly into or out of a parking space. Does the cylinder deactivation permit a reasonable idle speed or does the car not move at all if your foot is completely off the accelerator pedal?

    • @JSS
      @JSS  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you idle. I haven’t tested the deactivation at idle speeds though. It may not kick in until a certain MPH.

      It is standard on all non-Turbo 2.5L. The Turbo uses the exhaust of cylinder 1 and 4 to pre charge the turbine to eliminate lag. So the cylinders need to be on all the time.

    I'm planning to purchase a new 2020 Mazda CX-5 with 2.5L Skyactiv engine that has a cylinder deactivation feature.
    So apparently there was a recall on the cylinder deactivation feature back in 2018 and it was quickly fixed with a software update. It's my understanding that all newer models come with this updated software fix.
    So my real question is, how reliable do you think the engine will be with this feature in the long run? I'm planning to keep it for 10+ years.
    Thanks!

    • @JSS

      I don’t think the deactivation feature will have any real bearing in reliability. I think this engine is good to go for a long, long time.

    Putting those cylinders on/off adds tear and wear on cylinders and engine. That’s a dumb idea because effects car reliability. Who wants to deals with car issues? Specially inside the engine? Very expensive to fix of course if you manage to fix.

      Mazda’s implementation of cylinder deactivation is completely different then the god awful stuff that was put in Chevys for years. Chevys literally had the crankshaft change shape and it couldn’t last over time. Mazda simply keeps the intake and exhaust valves open and stops injecting fuel.
